View Full Version : The Weekly Drawing ~ Themed prompts for Group Members

Pira
April 11th, 2016, 06:08 AM
Based on requests from those who like to use their pens & ink (or pencils, watercolours or whatever materials & tools they favour) to draw, but find they lack motivation; I am starting this thread to encourage sketching/drawing/illustrating.

There are no hard and fast rules on how much time participants should spend on their work. A light sketch or a detailed drawing, the choice is up to the you. This is about setting a personal goal to take time every week and draw an object. The benefit is to the individual as they hone their skills one line at a time and take pleasure in the act of creating, as well as the added enjoyment of sharing with others and viewing their interpretations of a given theme.

1. Each theme will run Sunday - Saturday.

2. Themes for the month will be posted on the first Sunday of that Month

3. You may post your work at any time you wish during that week.

4. Each theme will be numbered. Please include that with your post.

5. Do not post a drawing prior to the date set for the theme.

6. If you are unable to post the week of the theme but still wish to do so later, you are free to post the image.

7. You may participate in as many or as few themes as you wish. No pressure! This is a guilt free thread ;)

8. Include the materials (ie., pen, ink, paper, etc.) you used for the work. Thoughts on the process are encouraged if you are willing, as we can learn from each other.

9. If you have any suggestions for themes, please message me.

10. Have fun!

I don't think it's a good idea to upload the old themes, rather feel it's best to cut ties and start fresh.

People new to it would be overwhelmed and those who came here from FPN can always share previous artwork in the gallery thread you started.

Rather than dwell on the old version I tweaked this one to be less rigid in some areas (mediums) and out of respect for FPG ~ New forum. New themes. :)

I only try to keep the pace with you :crazy_pilot:

Additionally I hope if we keep the posting frequency high to animate others also to join.

So folks, don't be shy join us, we want to see as many pictures as possible.

Drawing, sketching, scribbling is fun especially if we do it together and if many people join. :hippie:

Hah! I conceed the point.

That is also a good point about keeping this thread hopping. I don't know what the rhythm is in this forum, but if we stay the course I'm sure others will find it worthwhile to join in once they realize we don't bite. At least I don't think we do....if we are kept well fed. ;)

Mostly we are just here to remind them that pen & ink are multipurpose tools....although I would recommend no one uses them to pry open a can. No good will ever come of that and you will hate yourself in the morning.

Hi Moominyak,

Welcome aboard :)
I'm glad you joined, unfortunately I can't agree with your statement about bad artwork as its well done.
And of course can we see what it is.
In German we call it "Nudelholz" I´m not sure if rolling pin is the correct English term.

Sometimes not only used in the kitchen but also from resolute women to enforce their arguments (but not experienced it personally yet from my wife ;) )

Private Reserve Avocado, Iroshizuku Shin-Ryoku - diluted washes with a #4 watercolor brush
Iroshizuku Tsukushi - Set in some dark areas with a Noodler's Konrad brush pen

As usual for the small sketches, I used Strathmore premium recycled Sketch paper

Good choice on the broccoli. It's one of my favourite vegetables and all members of my family like it a lot. That includes the dog, who eats as much of it as people are willing to give her. We probably eat it three times a week...hmmmm

Konrad brush pen, Speedball B-6 and the old #4 round sable.
Mainly Cross Black & Apache Sunrise washes, Lexington Gray and Shin-ryoku for the ink samples and an unknown black with some residual (accidental) Blue Pearl for the heavy black areas in the lamp. Shin-ryoku and Rouge Hematite 1670 on the paper.
Paper is Canson 89# (160 g) Mix Media paper.

This is a dual-purpose sketch I'm using here and the other site (I've made my peace with them).

I still owe you a fan. I'll try to get it online in a couple of days - I have something "down to earth" I want to do for it and I'm still looking for a reference photo I like.

Moominyak ~ good job with that jar. I find them (regardless of shape) difficult to draw and so it was a good exercise for both of us :) ....the fan is excellent and a good choice for that challenge. I like how there were so many different types of fans...(which probably goes a long way to explain why English is such a confusing language)

Snowbear ~ I LOVE your interpretation of 'fan' :D and that was a good idea to combine a few challenges into a single drawing. Nicely handled.

*chuckles* Nicely done...and...well, your wife sounds like a sensible who prefers to keep her feet, tendons and back in working order. I agree that such shoes are beautiful and sexy...too bad they are insanely painful to wear. This is something men will never fully understand.

...having said that, I'll never comprehend how women overcome the pain for the sake of fashion. I'm not talking about aching feet. Rather, I'm talking about putting up with severe pain for a look for hours upon hours. My grandmother actually had a toe removed because it was mangled so badly in her youth, by footwear with a toe box that was too pointy and snug. I'm so glad I was raised by hippy parents rebelled against fashion and insisted on comfortable footwear.

I do get it though...the biology of why men love women in these things.

Me neither. I can't walk in heels even if I wanted to (which, thankfully, I don't)! I seem to spend most of my life in wellies and boots (yes, even during the 'great' British Summer).

This is one half of a pair of Derbies I've recently acquired - they look a bit masculine but that's probably why I like them, I'm not really one for pretty bows on shoes :) Wish I'd used Red Dragon rather than Oxblood, they are definitely red rather than brown. Also have to admit to cheating a bit and tracing a photo, as I was really struggling with this one - sorry!

No apologies needed.

The reason I chose 'a shoe' as an object to draw, is because aside from most of us actually having one lying around to sketch... it's a real challenge. And you rose to the occasion in fine style :)

Like yourself, I prefer a more masculine shoe ~ although there is a wedge heel on that pair of black suede Clarks :)...for me look is important but so is comfort.!!

I wore heels for 10 years as a legal secretary--and I am so sorry I did it. The pads on the balls of my foot got quite worn down; these days, I can't tolerate heels at all. I would advice against wearing them as you are just asking for trouble later in life. If nothing else, wearing them regularly really does damage to not only the foot but the knees and the lower back. They are okay on occasions, but not for everyday.

Oh ouch!

I was reading this morning how Julia Roberts went up the red carpet at Cannes this year in barefeet to protest the nonsense of women being turned away on the red carpet last year if they were not sporting killer heels. Good for her! MEN should be foreced to wear them to be accepted and then this nonsense would stop.

I like that, Pira.

I have the apartment to myself, tomorrow; well, to myself and the kitties, so I can work on the S&P shakers.

Funny - we have a couple of sets but don't actually use them. Salt is added only when cooking and then it's just poured into a small measuring bowl (for pinches) or into the palm of the hand (for teaspoons). Black pepper is in a grinder and red pepper is measured out like the salt.

On another subject - I made an ink tree! I have to re-make it because I just used water over stippled-on ink, not wet on wet. I can see some sheen and (whatever the term is for the color separation) but it's JH 1670 - there should be lots!

I was thinking about the 'use' of salt & pepper shakers when I drew up this list, realizing that not everyone even uses such things ....but hoped that they would then draw whatever it is that they DO use :)...or something they keep in the back of the cupboard because they haven't gotten around to throwing out that ugly set they were gifted when they got married.

We don't even own a set in this household. Like yourself I have a pepper grinder and cook with salt in a similar fashion, although I do have a tiny, orphan salt shaker for sprinkling... on a need be basis for those who need it (father-in-law).....

Ooh another tree. Do share that when you are done. I'm looking forward to seeing it :)

WELL....I didn't say they have go be yours ;) Usually if a person wears prescription glasses they tend to hang on to the old pair when they need to update the said specs. None about? Do you have an ipad or tablet? I intend to a picture of my glasses and then sketch from that image...

As for my salt shaker...thank-you. I just said 'watercolour paper' because I have a heap of loose sheets from when I cleaned out my cupboard that I'm 'reusing' (the back). IF this is what I believe it to be, it's probably Canson Montval, 140lb cold press paper....

....and the shape of the salt shaker is lovely but totally impractical for an inkwell. It would knock over too easily and the neck makes the Herbin 1670 bottles look like they sport gaping holes :D

Pets (https://flic.kr/p/HGp52J) by Charlie Wrenn (https://www.flickr.com/photos/cmwrenn3/), on Flickr

Background:
All three cats are rescues. Jasper was found by a coworker, and was about four weeks old. We took him and nursed him to health. During his initial vet visit, we found out he had an extremely strong case of FLV (Feline Leukemia Virus - incurable) but we decided to try and make his life better for the time he had left. He was the sweetest cat, and lived about a year.

Bell is the oldest at about 12. She was found wandering on ice as a kitten and given to a vet clinic. I had another coworker that worked at the vet, part-time, and told me about her. When we went to see her, she shot up my arm and laid on my shoulder; we took her home a few days later.

Zoe (the kitten) was feral and living in a storm drain with her three siblings and mother, outside our office building. A nice lady in the building took her in and fostered her until she was old enough to be adopted. I didn't want another pet at the time, but when I saw her photo, my mind was changed. She is "daddy's girl."

#12 - Our National Flag.

This was my first idea for the flag. I had a few other while I was in San Diego and took some reference shots, but ultimately came back to this one.
For those not familiar with US Flag history, a new star is added each time a state is admitted to the union. The new flag (with additional stars) becomes official on July 4th following the state being added.

Alaska became our 49th state on January 3, 1959, and Hawaii became the 50th on August 21. Because July 4 is between these two dates, we had a 49-star flag for one year.

Here is my salt-shaker. An old Tupperware thing pinched from my mum's cupboard when I went away as a student back in 1990, and still serving us well to this very day :) We also have a jar of salt for cooking / baking, but we don't use much on our meals (except for on chips, of course!! That's fries to you lot, not what we Brits call 'crisps') so this thing with a lid is great. Think it was probably meant for picnics.

Yay, Migo! That's three of us. Hopefully more will join in as the month progresses.
I'm going to start it as a new thread since we won't be going weekly. I have a couple themes picked out but. please, suggest more if you can.

Just a few suggestions. I thought it would be an idea to have themes that gave opportunities for multiple drawings so that we could post more than one drawing if we wanted to. All open to interpretation. I'm sure you'll have some better ideas :-)

- summer fruit
- your desk (at home or work)
- musical instrument(s)
- view from a window
- wild animal(s)
- technology
- movement
- sub-aqua
- metal

I this this a wonderful idea. It would be difficult on a weekly basis (at least for me) but monthly opens everything up. I'll add these to my list - I have a spreadsheet with topics. I will likely also borrow some from the monthly photo challenge I do at my photography forum. It looks like we'll be good for several months.

I'll post the new one tomorrow and provide a link to it, here. I have a glass dip pen just begging to get used some more!
