View Full Version : Pira's InkTest Trees

Pira

Instead of tediously writing about athletic & slothful Canidae, I decided to draw trees as ink samples....

For consistency sake the paper is always Stillman&Birn, Zeta & the trunk is always drawn with Platinum Carbon Black. The foliage is the inktest and I try to break the colour by using it as a wash. Same method each time. I thought it best for the trees to have their own little thread in here, instead of scattered around the creative gallery.

Today I hit #150 with MontBlanc ~ Tolstoy

I've been consolidating them in Pinterest in case you are interested in taking a gander at the forest of ink:

I've always loved your trees, Pira. Very happy to see them here. They're beautiful and a clever way to show off inks.
I'm much more drawn to visual representations than generic pages of words. More please........

Much appreciate the cheerleading. They might come in waves, but they seem to just keep coming. Heaven knows I haven't tapped all my inks yet and oddly enough they keep coming in the door. That's a matter for the 'addiction' thread though.. ;)

InkTest Tree: Sailor Jentle Blue

... is a bright medium blue and yet another in a long list of blue inks that refuse to scan or photograph in a manner that depicts the true colour. :smash:.... my bane

I was pleasantly surprised at how nice this colour is;starting out a startlingly Bic pen blue but then it mellows as it dries to a medium denim with an undertone of red. This stuff loves a flex nib. So for what it's worth...here are the results.

Iroshizuku ~ Shin-kai

Very complex blue grey ink ...stunning actually and photographs (these on an overcast day) just don't do this shade of ink justice.

I used a pair of watercolour round brushes. One to apply the water to the paper & a second, smaller one to apply the ink to the wet areas. :)

...too bad they are not making this shade an iron gall any longer. It's a nice blue that works wonderfully well with dip nibs, and would be beautiful for addressing envelopes.

I'm sure it's not lame at all, just unique onto you. :)

It is interesting how the different inks behave...IGs just don't play like non - IG inks do. They are amazingly stubborn....and yet I keep seeking them out :D

Inktest Tree: KWZI ~ Azure #3

....first off, as this ink breaks turquoise I had no hope in Hades of getting it to scan or photograph properly. The colour when using a dip nib for writing is a well behaved, rich, medium violet blue with some shading. That said let's just all enjoy the pretty flow of foliage.

SPEAKING of foliage ~ I am going to have to do some more experiments with this ink, because it is the most sluggish ink on wet paper that I have ever encountered. I have never had ink...crawl along paper as an afterthought. SO going back to mess around with this magical stuff. I'd put a spot of it in a drop of water on paper and it would just hang around...suspended on the surface until I chose to break the tension with my brush...I was making patterns with ink...IN DROPS OF WATER for heavens sake!! Trippy my friends....trippy.

SO many shades of dark, wildflower honey happening here! When using a dip nib this ink is a medium shader & leans toward the darker end of the spectrum. Beautifully behaved as we have come to expect from that talented ink magician, Konrad Żurawski

Another beauty, Pira.
When I test inks I always do a water wash as this is the best way for me to see behaviour & the colour tones. It is amazing how often people say 2 inks are identical yet the colour wash shows significant differences. Those are the differences I see & enjoy.

Agreed on all the above points. While the 'paper towel' is an interesting way to observe the colour spectrum the ink runs to, the real fun is breaking the ink entirely with water as they also behave differently, depending on their chemistry. :)

Thank-you. I'm glad you like them.

Ahhhh as Snowbear says, everyone has drawing ability, I think that the only thing holding people back is interest. It's like handwritting...we can all put in time to practice and improve it, but only those who truly have a passion for it will develop it further. The rest of us will be satisfied using our tools to write in a fashion we are most comfortable. My handwriting is undisciplined and lazy. It could be better but my attention strays like that of a puppy...which is why I prefer to draw trees. There is no good reason to spend 2 hours on an ink sample....it's madness. But it's my happy madness :3

InkTest Tree # 161

J. Herbin ~ 1670 Caroube de Chypre

Thank-you to Bureau Direct for this sample :)

As always, I find it very difficult to capture the sparkle in these types of inks with either camera or scanner. This image was photographed outside in the direct sunlight. I wanted to share both the shimmer and the salmon pink shades this ink breaks into with a wash. This ink is a brownish red. With a flex dip nib it lays down a rich 'dark' colour which shaded a reddish brown, and of course there is that very finely ground, golden sparkle; which is much more subtle than the heavier particles we see in the Diamine offerings. Notice how it adheres to the black ink that I apply after the foliage has dried...that sparkle drifts when dry. It's a much more conservative anniversary ink after last year, but then the Emerald was going to be nearly impossible to top. Refer to Nick Stewart's test for a truer 'image' of this ink for writing ~ that is pretty much bang on.

KWZI ~ Green No.3

The ink is from Knight's Writing Co., the Canadian distributor of this Polish ink. (yay!) There is a turquoise undertone to this ink, which makes scanning or photographing the colour difficult (for me) like usual. When photographed it pulls olive, when in fact the shade should be the deep hues of a late Spring lawn.

True to it's name, this is a deep brownish red writing ink... but when broken with water in a wash you release this velvet bugundy hue.
