I have 4 1/2:

M805 Black & Silver
M400 Tortoise
M215 Lozenge
M205 Clear (due to arrive soon)
M205 Blue demo (or what's left after the puppies ate most of it!)

I've been a bit disappointed at the stiffness of the M805 nib, but otherwise they are great pens.

Oooo, I bet that's pretty. I didn't know they came in smoke! I just recently discovered I like demos and large ink windows so I can see the ink sloshing around.

Here's the pen I'm talking about:

I really like it, it's just a tad small. I really should look for a 600/800 series Pelikan.

Just one--but it's the M400 white/tortoise. :) Right now it's inked with Visconti blue, but I'm not carrying it (it's a bit too much bling for high school). It's a joy to write with...though, yes, I could probably do with an M600 size instead. My hands aren't very big, but I do sometimes wish it were just the slightest bit bigger.

ETA: I also find myself hankering after a completely clear demo to show off some great inks (like the Yama Budo). :P~~ I do NOT, however, need another pen (I'm awaiting the arrival of an Esterbrook deep, dark copper J).

Let me see...

I believe it to be 9:

1 - Steno
4 - M-200's; Translucent Red, Amber, Blue & a Brown/Tortoise
2 - 140's; One standard green stripes and one Burgundy
1 - 400NN Black
1 - M800 Blue Stripe

And one I don't have - one of my grail pens: The Toledo 900 - maybe one of these days.

Hello. I am new and thought I would look at the Pelikan part of the forum. I have three now:

1) A 140 which is a little green striped one with a BB nib which I love
2) An M215 in navy and black with a Binderized BB nib which I love
3) I just bought a White Tortoise M400 from nibs.com and it will be a wet B. I am so happy I am getting this one. Really over-the-moon.

I used to think I didn't like Pelikans, now I am owned by them. When I get it I will share pics with you. I like to do videos.

Holy goodness! This is a pen I desperately want! Possibly more than an M800 or M1000. Oh my, I just had a thought...could you imagine an M800 or 1000 in white and tortoise?! Gah!

Anyway, yes, please share pics and vids when you get it!

So, let's see... Penspouse started this thread, asked the question, and then went off, supposedly, to count her ever multiplying pens. Some options here: either she forgot about the thread, intended to ignore the responses, been Shanghai'ed and is off on some Chinese boat somewhere, never had any Pelikans, or they're multiplying so fast she can't keep up. All in jest here, of course. If it's the latter, I'd like to know what ink you feed them.

So, Penspouse ... :) (It has been almost two years now!)

Cheers,
Rich

PS - I still can't believe no one has CP6 in their collection especially you folks with a lot of them. Like RR4U.

A little update on the status of my Pelikan collection: I recently added another M400 in green striated to my collection. Meh, you say? Boring, I hear you utter? Wait! Not so fast my friends...

This one is special because it came with an 18ct solid gold Pelikan nib! Actually, it came with TWO 18ct solid gold Pelikan nibs, one in M and one in EF. The seller also added a genuine Pelikan pouch holding 3 fountain pens. Found it on eBay and all together it cost me about as much as a new M200.

The pen and the nibs are in excellent condition. So, the current head count is 5, 4 M400s and one 150. And two extra nibs to swap in to some other nice pens (thinking of TWSBIs here).

I'm a pretty happy customer... :D

I guess I have more Pelikans than I thought. But they are clearly my favorite brand of fountain pen and I use them all. Even though I have the most M400 size pens, my favorite size is the M600.

How do you like the M400 white tortoise? I just ordered one and it will be my first Pelikan - Instead of buying a M200 first as I originally planned, I went for this after seeing some pictures of it :)

They are beautiful pens. Look at my review here: http://fpgeeks.com/forum/showthread.php/939-Pelikan-m400-White-Tortoise-A-Handwritten-Review The modern m400s don't hold as much as the vintage ones, but they are awesome low-maintenance pens. I use my White Tortoise at school every day. It is very comfortable and lasts me (as my brown/green ink pen) the whole week.

My White Tortoise arrived today, and I'm very happy with it, it writes wet and very smooth (a Fine nib), and looks really beautiful.

great to hear! My fine was great out of the box, but somehow got scratchy (it wasn't a case of tine misalignment) so I sent it off to a nib meister...it now writes more like a medium.

I love vintage Pelikans. But I really don't think I'd want more than 2 vintage 400s and 1 100n. They get really expensive past the basic colors!

Sadly my only one is not even a pen ...... Pelikan Edelstein Aventurine ink.

Wow, JustDaveyB that is an impressive expanding collection of Pelikan M620s.

An alarming expansion to add a bottle of Pelikan Edelstein Tanzanite and a M101n Lizard.
But not anything like JDB's.

I have three Pelikans. A vintage 800 which has a lovely, expressive and smooth nib, a modern M200 with a fine nib, which I also love as a travel pen.

And recently, a new M800 in black, which is a huge disappointment. It writes instantly, smoothly and with very light pressure, but it is totally devoid of any character with its stiff gold nib. I can't criticise the smoothness or its function - and the finish is peerless. It just doesn't connect with me in any way. I have cheap Chinese pens that give a similar writing experience at 1/20th of the price. I feel that the 800 will go on my disposal list before too long unless we bond.

Have you thought about changing the nib or getting it seen to by a nib meister and turning it into the ever popular stub ?

I'm very partial to Pelikans, both modern and vintage. I've been collecting them seriously since mid 2009. The current census comprises 19 pens -

Vintage:

1942 Black 100N
1953 Green 100N
Black/Green 120
Black/Green 120 II (M&K)
Black 140
Green 400
Brown tortoise 400NN
1947 Black IBIS
1937 Black Rappen bulb-filler

Modern:

Burgundy/Black M150
Solid Forest Green M200
Yellow M200
Red M205
Black/Silver Rings M215
Clear Yellow M205 Demonstrator
Translucent Amber M250 Demonstrator
Blue/Black M250/400 Frankenpen
Green M600
Black M1000 (Big Bird)

My favourite is the Rappen due to its age, rarity and the fact that it has never been inked. Several on the list have never been inked (including the Big Bird) and the rest are all in mint condition. I did own an M805 but sold it on as it was the only Pelikan that didn't click with me. After buying the M600, I found that I just didn't use the M805 any more.

With the exception of the uninked pens, the rest get a regular workout through the inked roster. Currently the black 100N is on duty filled with Noodler's Bernanke Black which is a fantastic match with the pen's semi-flexible M nib.

I've reached the point where I am no longer looking for any others to acquire. I've recently sold/swapped some Pelikans that were a duplicate model and color.

Well, for me it all started from this little vintage 400 brown tortoise... Within 3 years, I got the following Pelikan pens now, some of these I even got back ups.

Vintage 400 brown tortoise
M200 demo pens in dark green, blue and new clear demo
M250 demo pens in light green and amber
M400 blue striated, and white tortoise
M800 brown tortoise (new)
M1005 demo

My next long-term goal is to get the very beautiful M620 Berlin and Stockholm. After this, I must take a break from buying pens.

I got another one, a red M205. Because the tomato-red color of it appealed to me (and the chance of me getting a Toledo version is unlikely). I tried asking our local Pelikan distributor to order one for me but they weren't able to get any stock. Then I thought it had been discontinued, but apparently not. Haven't received it yet, it's still with a fellow pen-lover friend who visited Art Brown in NYC and is returning to Manila at the end of the month.

That makes 13!

M200 Fine which I like after some nib tuning. Great little pen. 2012

M800 Black Medium - which I dislike and is a huge disappointment. 2013. The nib is smooth but totally lacking in character and feel.

Hi fellow breeders ;)

At the moment my squadron of Pelikans consists of a couple of birds. One an M200 Demonstrator SE (Crystal) with an F beak which is fed exclusively on Abraxas #22 Blue Black, and an M200 (Eva) with black plumage and an M400 F beak fed this week on Diamine's Syrah.

I also have a bird waiting to hatch - hopefully sometime early next week. Another M200 but with a beautiful Blue Marbled plumage and a M beak. Jenny, as I think I'm going to call her, will most likely also be fed on a varied diet.

I don't think I'm going to stop there - what am I saying, I know I'm not going to stop there. My aviary will expand over the next few breeding seasons, with more M200s and I am also looking to breed some of the larger birds too, maybe some M400s and M600s and some of the vintage members of the species.

That's all for now folks as I have to go buy some more land with a larger pond/lake to keep all my birds happy. :crazy_pilot:

The M400 is identical in size to the M200. The nib is of course gold on the M400 instead of the steel M200 nib, and the guts are identical. The M400 has nicer furniture attached to it and the binde is better quality.

If you want a better writing experience, I would pick up a M400 14K nib to replace your M200 nib with. You will see the same improvement as the M400, but with just changing out nibs.

The M600 is my favorite size of the modern Pelikans. It fits my hand just perfect, the weight is nice, and they write perfectly every single time.

Now all that said... the M800 is a beauty of a pen. The brass piston mechanism gives a heavier pen, but a wonderful balance in the hand. The M800 series nibs are wonderful writers and I love the soft springy nibs. They glide across the page and you wouldn't even know they are touching paper if it weren't for the ink trail they leave behind.

I wouldn't rule out Pelikans just yet. Try some of the other models and see what is out there.

tandaina
May 9th, 2013, 10:02 AM
And I'd also add that the antique Pelikans are DELICIOUS and amazing. A 50s era 400/400NN/etc in whatever color you fancy. The 50s era gold nibs are wonderful, soft and flexible, so expressive. They lack the huge round iridium ball of the modern Pelikan gold nibs, I don't actually LIKE the modern gold nibs and soon as I get a pen with one the nib goes into storage in the pen box and a 50s nib goes on that pen. Divine.

My current search is for an old 100N with a really fun nib. Either super flexi, or wide and paint brush like.

I have fewer Pelikans than I have had, but what I have are these:

Pelikan Toledo M700 (have had it for 20 years)
Pelikan Toledo M710 (since the LA Pen Show, this year)
Pelikan M205 with a Keuning Monster nib
Pelikan 140 (since LA Pen Show 2012)

And two Pelikan ballpoints, a 105 and a plastic black thing that came in a skinny black case, supposed to have a Pelikan's profile.

I have more Pelikan nibs than Pelikan pens.

The Toledos, for instance, each have a steel nib (EF in the 700 and F in the 710). The original nibs are nice, too, but I really like these steel nibs.

I only have two, a M800 in Black with 2BB Nib and a P1 also with a 2BB Nib, That's my lot, no need for any more now, well unless that M1000 comes up at the right price, which they never do. That must be the only pen that virtually never comes up on eBay as an Auction and when they do, they go for more than a new one costs. :(

I have two, soon to be three...

1. M600 Ruby Red with a custom Broad left oblique nib by John Mottishaw. I have the original Fine nib which "sings" when I use it, only nib I have that does this, very pleasant to use.
2. M800 Blue O' Blue with a custom Fine left oblique nib by John Mottishaw.
3. Arriving soon: M605 Marine Blue with an architect's point cut from a Broad nib, also by John Mottishaw.

The folks are nibs.com make buying new pens and nibs seem like eating candy, except for the groans of pain from my checking account.

Be careful about the white cap. If the early run, it has a tendancy to crack. It would look like black fine pencil marks.

Right now, I have two Pelikan fountain pens: a P200 and a Pharo. The Pharo doesn't seem to write as well as I remember (I got it a long time ago), but I like the P200. I might consider getting other Pelikans in the future, especially since the P200 is a little small for me. I don't have a big problem with it, but I think I prefer pens that are a bit longer.

Pelikans are designed to be used with the cap posted. If you post the cap on the P200, you will have a full length pen.

Yes, posting the cap improves the length of the pen for my hand. I have a Pilot Prera that's even smaller than the P200, and I have to post the cap on it. If I don't, the end of the pen doesn't clear my hand, making it definitely too short for me.

I damaged the barrel of my most expensive pen (a Cartier) from posting the cap over many years. Luckily it wasn't expensive to replace (other problems were), but I've been trying to get out of the posting habit to avoid damaging any other pens. However, if Pelikans are designed to be posted, maybe I should post them after all. Thanks for the info.

Being a newbie, I have zero. But my dream pen is the Pelikan M200 Cafe Creme. Maybe some day...[emoji4]
The Cafe creme was my FIRST Pelikan.....it WASN'T my LAST......!!:)
After the Holidays (and my credit card is "breathing" again.....!!) I've got an M800 Burnt Orange "flying in"!!
Don't know how scarce the Cafe Creme will become....IIRC, it was a Limited Edition" (??) I could be wrong.....but check around -- you may be pleasantly surprised!;)

Always try to get the dibs....on fountain pens with EF nibs!!

Haven't got one, haven't even ever seen one. Probably never will.

Is that because you're only interested in calligraphy, or you're already settled on preferences for a good working pen?

The Pelikan 400 is for my hand not the best ergonomically, but its still the best daily writer I have.

Got my first Pelikan today! it's an Epoch, cream and silver. Very pretty and writes very well. Knitting a cozy for it now so I can carry it in my purse without it getting scrapes. :)

Am up to four now. In order of acquisition:

120 Merz & Krell with EF
M205 in Toledo Red with M
M150 in Black with M
M205 in Black with F

No longer have any of these four. They were in a pen roll, and fell out somewhere. Lost. That was in June 2015. Along with a Parker 51 Special set and a two Parker 45's. (one a 14k nibbed Flighter)

At present, I have three. They are:

M200 old style blue marbled with OB nib
M200 Cognac fine nib
120 Type II/Merz & Krell (black) medium - even though some of the gold plating on the cap band is worn off, it is in really good shape and I got it for a sumgai price.

I'm rather lucky. My mother has been introduced to The Writing Desk and Pelikan Pens UK and now knows that pelikans are really acceptable for birthdays and christmas. And I've also managed to buy a few vintage 400s for very cheap prices given their small restoration needs (a bit of piston work and a little nib straightening).

So now I'm up to fifteen, I think, including my Pelikanos - still much loved even though I have their big brothers.

6 -- now that I've counted. Though I'm going to add another very soon as a gift to myself for a recent promotion at work (m101 Red Tortoise to complete the trio I have.)

m1000 black, F
m800 SE Tortoise, BB
m600 Green o'Green SE, M
m101n Brown Tortoise, B
m101n Lizard, F
m250 Burgundy/Red, M

Love every single one and would have to be really pressed to give any of them up.

Three now:
An early '90s M600 in green stripe
Two early '90s Pelikanos - one red and one blue.

Would love a brown 400 at some point.

Both 50's Pelikan and neither babied, a 400nn ef and a brassy 140 ef. Not flex pens obviously but both with a nice bit of give, the 400 more than the 140.

Recently sold a 400nn om, a favorite, and am looking for a 400 Tortoise om to replace it.

I got 2 so far... M600 and M800 "Grand Place". I definitely need more. At least another M800, and that new retro M120 looks very tempting too... ;)

Two! A black striated 400NN and a green 140. I keep being tempted by Pelikans... Both new and old, I'm very proud that I've managed to keep my flock to two.

Pelikan 100N green marble binde; hard rubber piston knob; black celluloid cap with two chicks; found in a bazaar in Romania fitted with a L&C Hardtmuth nib; currently fitted with Pelikan 140 F nib;
Pelikan 120 green black; came fitted with a Pelikan M400 M nib ground to a stub with barely any iridium in the point.
Pelikan 400NN green striped; found in a Romanian bazaar; the F nib has chevrons which stop short of the ink channel; i.e. the type fitted on the later models of 400NN.
Pelikan M400 green striped M nib.
Pelikan P50 Script calligraphy pen; 1.5mm italic nib.

Figured out my preferred size for a daily writer is the M600.

Sold all my Pelikans, and left only these two:
- M600 Black-Green, F nib
- M600 Black, M nib

Now, trying to choose which M620 City Collection i'll add to the family..

Update:
2 pens didn't sold (M200 Cognac w/ 14k BB nib, and M400 Black-Green w/ 14k M nib), so i will keep them for now..

Hmmm... if I count just the fountain pen then six. Looking to growing my flock of 100/101Ns... ;)

Keepers:
- Later gen 100N Black EF Export with a flexible F nib. My EDC pen, needs a polish though although it is otherwise in great shape, plating on the clip and trim rings is around 98% intact.
- Later gen 100N Green with a flexible EF nib. In great shape, might need a polish though. Plating on the trim rings is around 99% intact, clip renewed.
- Later gen 101N Tortoise with a flexible N nib (left foot oblique EF). My Baby <3 Needs a gentle polish though. Plating on the trims is around 96% intact, clip 100%.

Up for grabs:
- 400NN with an OF nib + a matching(?) pencil. Some pitting and plating loss on the clips etc. Otherwise in very nice shape.
- Black 500 Double L with an M nib. In need of polishing, the doublee cap is covered with microscratches as is the pen body too. Few minor dings.
- Burgundy 140 with a nice M nib. This one has serious plating loss but otherwise in ok shape. Also, the feed needs work. As in, the pen runs for a bit and then just stops.

Now, when you say "Up for grabs"... ;)

Also, how would you compare the flex on the 400nn to the 100n?

Now, when you say "Up for grabs"... ;)
Up for grabs > will end up for sale, that is once I get off my 'hind to get some pictures of the pens, writing samples and whatnot... ;)

Also, how would you compare the flex on the 400nn to the 100n?
Difference between nibs > Depends entirely on the nib but for the most part you are more likely to find vintage 100N nibs that are semi to full flex. There are of course the D (manifold) nibs which were meant to be used with carbon copy paper but yeah... Finding full flex 400NN nibs seems to be way more difficult, especially in EF or EEF widths.

The one in that particular 400NN is a soft one, more akin to modern nibs. Not at all a nail but for me entirely not flexy enough (With this chap here liking variation in his line width and then some. A lot). Also, the OF nib, despite it's suggested line width, leaves a line far too wide (more like an M). I mean, I do like the occasional pen with a juicy B/BB/BBB nib (like the first gen rOtring 600 series pens which I have in sets of EF & B steel nibs, complete nails but so soft...). Anyway, that one just doesn't strike a chord with me even though it was at one point the supposed grail pen for me (with the Art Nouveau'ish aesthetics and whatnot).

I have found that I do seriously love the 100/101N series pens (with flexy nibs) more then pretty much anything else in the pendom. It has the perfect look, size, weight, balance and feel for me, writing with it... is just effortless. There are of course other pens that I do love like the black Vacumatic Parker 51 (brushed SS cap), it has a very wonderful and responsive stubbish M nib... very nice line width variation and flow. And it just works. Without a fail.

But enough of my babbling, I do hope this answered your questions. :)
