View Full Version : My First Nakaya

I bit the bullet, selling pens and bought my first Nakaya. A beautiful Heki Tamenuri writer. The box and kimono make a tremendous presentation. It is a gorgeous brown green. My iPhone pictures don't do it justice. Look it up on nibs.com and see better photos. The only thing that bothers me is that after I use it, if I uncap it a few hours later it's hard to start. I'm using a cartridge I filled with Schaefer document ink. I'm thinking I didn't get enough pressure to keep the ink flowing better. Tomorrow I'll try the converter to see if it helps. I'll edit after I do that. The nib itself writes beautifully.

Nice pen. I suggest switching to Platinum ink cartridges at least initially. I have no idea what "Schaefer document ink" or even Sheaffer document ink might be and hope it is not stamp pad ink. See how it behaves with an ink it was designed for before trying other inks.

That's very attractive. I like the subtle way the green color comes out.

Did you have to wait? Last time I check they are not in stock at nibs.com.

Pistachio ice cream slathered in chocolate sauce! :-) I love the contrast at the junction between section and barrel.

I have never had a problem with the ink not starting with any of mine, even after weeks without use. It might be the ink you are using. Is that the metal thread edition? If yes, how do you like it? I'm especially interested in the grip and how it the metal threads affect the feel.

I'm also thinking avocado slush mix with coffee, which is actually a popular drink in South East Asia.

Okay, it starts fine. Evidently in my excitement I didn't give it long enough to flow solidly to the feed. Schaefer document ink is made for fountain pens and is pretty water and fade proof. It doesn't seem to creep like Noidlers. I did not have to wait. If you want one it's best to call nibs.com because they are behind in updating charts. I wanted the Heki because I love the green brown colors. The chart said they had it available in a Neo but they didn't. The portable was the only writer that they had in stock and I love it. The one I bought has the steel thread which gives it more heft which I like. Luckily it was also $100 cheaper. I'm very happy with the purchase. I'm already saving for another with a stub.

You can feel that the threads are metal but the grip itself is not metal. I actually like it a lot.

Do you have a link to a source for that ink? I know De Atramentis has an ink they call Document Ink but I have never heard of a Sheaffer or Schaefer document ink.

Glad all is well with the pen.

I actually love the metal threads because it gives the pen more weight.

Congrats on the beautiful pen! I would also love to get a Nakaya but I have no idea which size is best for me. I'm under the preconception that they are all very large. If I like my sailor pro gear, is there one around that size? Thanks.

Which Sailor Pro Gear do you have? Maybe from that I could make a recommendation. Here are some Boring Details that might help:

The Barrel Length measurement is from the tip of the nib to the end of the barrel.

And from Nibs.com:

Johns measurements exclude the nib so will be different than my measurements.

I had no idea barrel length was from tip of nib.... then again there's the closed length... [emoji29]
I have a first version full size pro gear, just a black one. It seems like the piccolo is closest length-wise. It surprises me how the three all have the same diameter.

Added more measurements from Nibs.com

And I find the Piccolo near perfect even unposted:

Given how light these pens are, is it safe to use ones longer than what I normally use? Are these measurements for ones with metal threads? Do metal threads' additional weight contribute to less fatigue (less back heavy)? I really like the decapod, which seems to be the second shortest, though still much longer than the pro gear and piccolo. Sorry too many questions.
Thanks.

Edit:
Just found the metal thread ones and they are much heavier at 30g compared to ~24g.

I find the balance near perfect with no back weighting issues.

I'm kind of hooked on Nakaya now. The nib looks just like a platinum but I swear it's smoother. I love the size of the portable and even with the metal screw on it's not heavy at all to me. My future goals are for a Neo, a Decapid Twist, and a Naka ai.
I have 3 of my grail pens, the Nakaya, a Murex long pen, a Pelikan 1000 with a Masuyama stub on the way so I have to revamp my list.

A couple things to remember. One thing about the Neo Standard is that it takes nearly four full turns to cap or uncap. The Portable, Piccolo, Decapod and Naka-ai take between one and two full turns. I have no problem living with the extra turns but if you are capping and uncapping frequently it can get to be annoying.

The section on the Neo Standard is considerably and functionally longer which I do like during extended writing sessions.

Oh my: of all places, I was at a Pelikan Hub the other night when I had an opportunity to examine and use a Decapod in the sumi-gold finish, and I was done for. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to afford that pen, but my goodness, my heart stood still.

You may thank this man (http://inkypassion.com/2015/08/13/aesthetic-bay-to-host-nakaya-pen-clinic-from-25-27-august/) probably. He designs many of the pens and is their nib expert. Mine came from John Mottishaw since I get him to make them stub or cursive italic. But the Music nib is stock block Yoshida.

I love this pen!

Regardless of what it takes, invest in getting it to write to your desires. That is a pen that will last many lifetimes and is not one that is mass produced by any measure.

It is on my short A list!

Incredible work!

All very tempting... I have a Platinum Century but have always fancied a Platinum Izumo, maybe it is the next step?

+1. I have used the Platinum blue-black cartridges that John Mottishaw sends with both my Nakayas and have had no problems whatever. The ink is pretty water-resistant as well.

I had only heard about these "things", and one day I had some "extra change" in my wallet when one popped up for sale in 2012. Darn, it was so pretty that I just had to have it.....The guy listed all kinds of specific's about the pen, including where he purchased it which was Nibs.com. Heck, he even posted his phone number for anyone to call him directly to close the deal immediately. It was a Nakaya Decapod Cigar in the Color of AKA-Tamenuri which is Reddish / Dark Red and it came with a Maki- E Converter. The Nib is a Medium 0.49mm w / a Little Flex.......This is one of my Top 4 or 5 Pens that I own and I have around 700 pieces in my collection! She writes so incredibly smooth, that's it borders on unbeliveable! I am so Happy that I stretched and bought this pen, that it's not even Funny.......
