View Full Version : How Many Pens Do You Have Inked?

RayCornett
September 19th, 2016, 03:04 AM
Usually I have 3-4 pens inked. However, I have been needing to get back into writing and drawing. I have a custom ink I mix myself and really love. I thought...........hmm,,,,,,not liking to waste ink, maybe inking up a BUNCH of pens will force me to draw and write more so the ink doesn't go to waste drying up in the pens! So,,,,,I inked 60 pens yesterday. I do like having so many options for pen and nib size.

How many pens do you have inked?

Since the last time we had this discussion (http://fpgeeks.com/forum/showthread.php/17318-How-many-pens-inked-up-at-one-time-and-how-to-keep-them-from-drying-out) my count has risen to 24. All with different inks. I'm now including two calligraphy pens I'd forgotten about in the last count.

Thanks to Pelikan Hub, I've brought three pens into the action: two Pelikans and a Danitrio.

And thanks to watching a bunch of YouTube videos, particularly Leo's pentificating (street sketching in New York City), inked up the Pilot CH912 (PO) with Platinum Carbon Black to entice myself to try drawing again.

In this crowd I feel a little austere. Normally I'd like to have two or at most three pens inked, and my idea is that one is the primary pen of the moment and the other is for when Pen A runs out of ink in a public place.

Now I have four inked, but that's because one is a new acquisition and I'd like to compare its nib with a few other nibs I'm already familiar with.

Three at the moment with three different inks (though two are green inks). I had gotten up to about 10 and went on a cleaning spree. Got down to one, a Pilot Metropolitan with Pilot Blue ink. It was soon joined by a Visconti Van Gogh with a Visconti Green cartridge and a Waterman Phileas with Waterman Tender Purple. I'm about to load Ancient Copper into something, maybe my Eco.

Howdy- just thought I'd jump in to say, I'm down to 3 pens inked (two eyedroppers from India that will NEVER run out of ink, and a 3776 Century). For me that's like, a record or something. Usually I have around six to ten.

I just got a Pilot Custom Heritage 912 but either I got a defective pen or don't own an ink it like so it's sitting in a box and I'll address it at my convenience.

Anyway- I'm using this as an opportunity to document I only have 3 pens inked (haaa...). Who knows if or when that'll happen again.

Four currently inked, all Japanese. Pilot CH 92, Pilot Custom 74, Namiki Falcon and Sailor 1911L. Kon Peki, Sailor Jentle Sky High Blue, Sheaffer Black, Edelstein Saphire. Oh, forgot, Lamy Safari Dark Lilac with Lamy Dark Lilac ink.

I used to be one of those people who always had six pens in use with different colours for my work. I would like to pass my accumulated software and knowledge on to a new generation and retire, so I have had no reason to design software for a while. As a consequence I now only have one, a Parker Moderne filled with Tsutsuji, in use.

It's up to five now, which is really pushing my maximum for practicality, especially since I decided some time ago that my Pilot Varsities and Esterbrook Dip-Less sets don't count. I rarely use the Varsities, but frequently use the Dip-Lesses.

But when I do have this many pens inked, I cycle through them often enough to assure myself that none of them are drying up. And one or two should be empty again fairly soon.

Not entirely sure I'd recommend them, unless you find a really good deal. They do tend to dry out pretty readily, and at least half needed some attention to their nibs. But they're good fun.

Meanwhile things have gone a bit awry here in Weevil Burrows, and there seem to be nineteen pens inked. I swear the inklings must be adding new ones during the night...

Lowest price I've seen so far for the Dollar demonstrators is 90p each. Not quite sure if that's a good enough deal that I'd want to spend time tweaking and fixing, although it might be good practice for me (having only just dared to start gently tweaking the nibs on my Lamys).

If get your inklings under control, perhaps you could share your methods :)

grainweevil
October 8th, 2016, 03:57 AM
90p each is not bad - I was hoping to be able to direct you to the deal I found, but the seller put the price up. They're maybe not the easiest nibs to learn adjustment on though. Incidentally, if you haven't come across it already, I found the single most enlightening resource on nib adjustment is Richard Binder's workshop notes PDF (http://www.richardspens.com/pdf/workshop_notes.pdf). Well worth a read.

As for the inklings, they were rounded up and warned that Iroshizuku drinking privileges will be revoked if necessary. So I'm back down to fourteen (and seriously considering not including the Dollars in the count in future).

I'm up to 5 today. I have been trying to stay at four: two stubs/italics for my everyday bullet journal writing, one fine for filling forms, etc. and my trusty pocket pen. However, this week I received a new pen, so I had to ink it up to test it. I'm still using the same color ink for a week and changing every Monday so I can easily navigate my bullet journal. The new pen is now inked in next week's color.

Down to four, which is kind of a decision point. I could wait until I've emptied two more. On the other hand, this is where I always think of ones that I haven't used in a while, and tell myself that five or even six really isn't that many.

On the other other hand, I have a repaired pen that should be coming in sometime in the next few days, so that will be back to five again right there.

If I'm not counting the Dollars (pens, not currency) it's down to five. Briefly today, during a catastrophic converter failure in the Sonnet, it was down to four. Moral of that tale is if the converter looks as old as the pen, and the pen is 22 years old, then you should probably not cross your fingers and trust the converter is okay...

Up to 28. All with different inks. Whenever I get a new ink I just can't resist inking up a pen with it.

I do have to admit now that 28 is way too many. I'm considering following migo984's approach of selecting 10 inks that match the feel of the season. Those, plus a black, should give me enough variety, but make sure each inked pen gets used regularly.

Update: The danger with this approach is discovering that one doesn't have 10 inks that are sufficiently wintery, so going to buy a couple more, then getting a couple more on top of that to get the free postage.

I currently have four of my five pens inked up, and feel that's too many. I don't know how people keep track when they're in double figures. I've vowed to myself not to ink any more until I'm down to two - one piston filler, and one other.

Long term I want no more than three inked at any time - one pocket pen, one piston filler for general scribbles, and one comfortable desk pen for writing long letters (and only filled when I'm doing that). Any more is simply inking stuff up for the sake of it (for me personally), and risking drying out, clogging pens and wasting ink.

With the suddenly large collection of pens, and my capricious opinions about most of them, I am already considering thinning the herd.

It turns out that I had been very fickle. I'd have two or three favorites for a year or two and two or three or six others that I rotated in and out of service fairly often. Meanwhile, I have eight or ten, twelve Platinum Preppies and such like pens -- that I don't count -- with not-black inks.

Since January this year, I've challenged myself to ink up no more than four (or five) pens and only top-off the ink -- no more frequent sessions of pens-and-inks fussing.

So far so good. Except for a short period of quick additions after buying some inks at Pen Show Poland, and then quickly rotating them into the Preppies, I've been fairly consistent.

I've been aiming for four (cos pen case holds four), but this month it's five (I don't necessarily treat the two Pilots as case-pens), cos I fitted the Platinum UEF nib into the sidelined unpolished shu Nakaya PIccolo Cigar.

SHORT ANSWER: Five: three Nakaya Piccolo Cigars (kuro, heki, unpolished shu) and two Pilots (CH912 (PO) and Falcon (SEF)).

I think this might be a permanent team.

But never say never.

48. But that is only because there is a pen meet up scheduled today and another one in two weeks where I want to take most of my pens to. Having them inked up makes it easier for others to get a feeling how they write.

Usually I only have 3-4 (max. 5) pens inked up: A Pilot Falcon SEF never leaves the team, always filled with a very dark to black colour. The other pens then have to come in pairs, e.g. a Pelikan M300 Black BB + an M320 Pearl M or an M200 Clear 1.1 mm + M400 White Tortie F.Architect or a Pilot Elite 0.8 mm + an E95s F or so.

I always use a very dark/black writing pen for consistency in my journal/planner + a broad nib with a "pop" colour for headlines etc. and another fine nib for longer writing. A perfect match then is to have pens which work with their respective inks plus all colours harmonizing.

I am now at a point where I can't keep all 7 (or 8) from drying out. :/ I think I would be best off with 3 inked -- one with my go to black, one with blue, and a sample I am trying.

...How many pens do you have inked?

Today, these 12, three short of a full rack. They're all inked and in my rack on my desk, with four triple-pen cases nearby when selecting some for the road.

41572

Left to Right: Esterbrook J - 9555 nib; Pelikan M250; Aurora Optima; Pelikan M400; Sheaffer Balance OS - super flex EF nib*; Pelikan M400; Pelikan M700; Sheaffer Snorkel*; Conid Minimalistica - smooth F*; Montblanc 146 (early '60s); Pelikan M200 Cafe Creme; Conklin 40 gold overlay crescent-filler.

Six are filled with ink mixes from vials that junglejim sent to me to test.

*These three are favorites and always filled with an ink assigned to each. Balance with MB Toffee; Conid with Diamine Sargasso Sea; Snorkel with whatever darkish red that I want to have handy. I really need to assign a black to a pen.

And today, I packed them all in cases for writing at a picnic table in a nearby park. My "kit" from left to right consists of postcards, an old advertising blotter (well-used), postage stamps, the dozen pens in my prior post in Pelikan triple cases, a list of pens' ink fills, and modern and vintage writing paper, notecards and envelopes, including wartime V-Mail and USPO aerogrammes. A few of you will see the result. :)

I've currently got four inked up. Two of them are old sheaffer desk pens, a touchdown and a snorkel. They are always inked up, because, well, they are right there on the desk... And the little kaweco sport, it's always inked up because it's the goto knock around pocket pen... That only leaves one slot for all the others to fight over.

I think I need a new system :(

I am at 19 pens inked right now and number 20 should show up on Monday. For a while I was down to 15 inked, but I bought four Viscontis in August and didn't clean any pens out. Maybe I should go though and see what isn't getting used and clean a few more out.

Hard to imagine this when thinking back over the last couple of years, but I have 7 pens with ink in them right now. Or, to put it another way, I only have 7 pens left. All the rest are, mostly with regret, sold or given away.

Just re-inked my Pelikan 400nn. Odd how that one didn't get sold though, considering the popularity of the brand and that it came from a very reputable source.

My pens are:

A custom alumilite (from what now seems like the defunct somethingwritepens.com) filled with Iroshizuku Kon Peki and sporting a medium italic (FPNibs.com) Jowo #6.
A Pilot Custom 823 fine filled with Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo (hasn't been out of rotation since purchase!).
A Pilot Custom Heritage 912 FA filled with Sailor Kin mokusei.
A Pilot Decimo fine filled with KWZ IG gummiberry (an ink that has revived my use of this pen).
A Lamy 2000 extra fine filled with Noodler's BSAR (that's going to change soon).
A Waterman's 52 fine filled with Pilot Blue-Black.
A Pelikan 400nn extra fine filled with Diamine Delamere green.

Am considering adding one pen to the list. Just cannot decide what. My very short short list is:

Eboya - their website is a nightmare for non-Japanese speakers, but I have friends in Japan who may help if I go this way.
Aurora Optima Nero Perla - seems a little ordinary for the price.

I've had to be harsh to omit so many good makers, for a variety of reasons (cost-utility mainly).

In addition to this thread's original question, may we also know how many pens are not inked and what percentage of an owners pens are inked or uninked?

I have more pens inked than uninked but it's almost 50/50.

junglejim

One, always just one. I'll fill the pen up and write until it's empty. It gives me a good idea of what the ink can do under different writing conditions and paper. Then on to another pen and ink combination. Currently inked is the Pilot Metro with the stub nib and KWZI Honey. Three pens are uninked so I have 25% inked.

All the Best.

What are the two green 'uns at the bottom of the left hand set?

They look nice...Those are two of my E. Faber Permapoints. The nibs on both were beyond help so I replaced them with new ones: Knox on one, and some generic Iridium one on the other.

I like how the pattern and the end caps a lot. And they write pretty nicely now, with no lack of flow, but I suspect all the original nibs were rather subpar. They were rather poorly regarded in their day. :)

I made the mistake of counting not too long ago. I don't remember the number (and it's surely changed since then) but it was over 30 pens inked. Fact is, only a very small number of my pens are ever uninked.

Today I have a MONTBLANC Monte Rosa with a DM nib with some 60 or so year old Skrip and a Senator Regent with a Broad nib with some 15 year old Visconti in some form of Sepia/ Brown . I am going Cemetery prowling and will be taking notes on graves for a cousin in Texas who has family buried in a small family Cemetery in McEwen Tennessee and the Monte Rosa can write small in the cheap / small notebooks that I always have in my pocket . The Senator is just a joy to write with and I always try to have one or more with me . I have my first Pelikan on the way from Germany (1950-1954 set ) so I will be inking that when it gets here . That's it right now, usually only have two or three at most inked at any one time .

I just got down to three, if you don't count one Esterbrook Dip Less desk pen (which really isn't a fountain pen, but keeps ink in the well), and a few Pilot Varsities which I probably won't bother refilling any more once they're empty.

Parker Vacumatic with Namiki Blue.

Pilot Custom Heritage 92 with Pilot Blue-Black.

Lamy 2000 with De Atramentis Document Blue.

But I'm thinking of inking another pen today, as you can never have too much blue ink available.

Usually 5-8, as 8 is what fits in my pen holder. Keeps things manageable and allows a good variety of nibs, pen personas, and ink colors.

Considering that any of us can choose to answer the question, this seems not to be a very popular thread. I am answering it today only because I've got (what is for me) an unusually large number of pens inked: four. Parker 51, fine nib, Aurora black. Parker 51, fine/medium, Pelikan brilliant black. Lamy Profil 81, a really generous medium, Pelikan royal blue. Montblanc SlimLine, a painfully fine fine nib, Skrip jet black. Normally two pens inked are quite enough, one being a backup for when the other runs out of ink.

Without being specific, I can say that four is a small proportion of all the fountain pens I own. Some of them languish uninked for quite a long time.

I'm working diligently to get my inked pens down to a manageable level. I'm down to 4 - Italix Parsons, Wing Sung 699, Lamy 2000 and Lamy Studio All Black. I expect it will be the end of the week before I get down any further.

I'd love to get down to 2 - one for my journal writing and left at my desk and 1 to carry for planning and daily writing.
