I have a rare treat for the vintage Conklin collectors today: a near-mint BCHR Conklin Crescent-Filler #75 in the scarce chevron pattern (pen and cap band) with a massive Conklin Toledo #7 nib re-tipped by Greg Minuskin. Arguably the largest Crescent-Filler Conklin ever made:

Description: 1920-25 Conklin Crescent-Filler #75 (chevron BCHR). It seems that whoever first purchased this pen spared no expense, selecting the most sizeable Crescent model in the display case and opting for all of the finest accouterments at an added cost: viz. the clip as well as the wider, 1/2" rolled gold cap band, turned to match the chasing on the cap and barrel. I've scoured the internet for a 75 in this configuration (forums, eBay, Worthpoint, Internet Archive), but haven't been able to turn up another like it. This model is difficult enough to track down (especially in this condition), but the chevron chasing and turned cap band really put it in a class of its own. The imprint "Conklin CRESCENT-FILLER" (as opposed to "Conklin'S) dates the pen to 1920-25 according to this genealogy: http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/fo...other-conklin/ Consistent with the idea that the chevron pattern is a later development.

The pen measures 5 5/8" capped with cap OD of 9/16". There has been some debate on various forums about whether the 75 or the earlier S8 was the largest Crescent-Filler Conklin ever made and about the relative sizes of #7 and #8 Toledo nibs. At least one well-respected veteran has claimed that the S8 is numerically largest, but the nib on the 75 is physically larger. While others have pointed to the thicker girth of the 75. However, owing to the considerable variation in the size of the Crescent-Filler across its evolution, it's difficult to make a definitive generalization (perhaps someone can offer more insight here?). At any rate, I'm hoping the comparison photo featuring this pen next to a common 2NL will give an impression of its relative size.

As you can see, #7 Toledo nib is a monster indeed. When I found the pen, the iridium was worn away from both tines. So I sent the nib off to Greg Minuskin, who re-tipped it, ground it to a bold (.80mm) width, and re-installed it in the section with the necessary adjustments. The results of his masterful work are readily apparent. The shape and style of the tipping exhibits a remarkable factory appearance. And the nib is buttery smooth with stubbish line-variation.

Condition: Near-mint – the following is largely intended to note the flaws it *doesn't* have. No chips, cracks, personal engravings, brassing, or threading issues. All parts present and correct. The chasing is extraordinarily deep, as is the fully-legible imprint (see photos). Color retains the factory black hue as opposed to the oxidized brown so common to these pens. Very minor micro-abrasions consistent with drawer wear here and there, but no chips or significant scratches (note that the apparent mark on the top of the cap in the 2nd photo is merely a reflection, cast by my makeshift lampshade light box!). Apologies also for the dab of dried ink visible in a couple photos on the bottom of the section. I didn't notice it was there until afterward and will wipe it off before packing for shipment. The pen is fully-functional, with the sac recently replaced and the lock-ring smoothly turning and securely locking. An outstanding centerpiece for any Conklin collection.

Price: was $850, REDUCED TO $650 SOLD (on another board)
