I understand that the customs duty on pens imported into the UK can be quite high, is that right?

Indeed. That's why I've stopped buying from outside the European Union (until that door closes).

At the moment Vat is 20% of the combined value of the goods and the postage for anything over £15. Add to that Royal Mail's handling charge of £8 then it pushes prices up significantly for importing.

Oh, and depending on the value of the goods there may be customs charges as well...

Royal Mail charge £8, but if it goes to ParcelForce, they charge £13. It depends on which UK hub it lands in.
