Two vintage pens with delightfully flexible nibs for sale this week. The first is a Waterman 0552 1/2 with smooth, gold-filled overlay and extra-flexible Ideal #2 nib:

1. Waterman 0552 1/2. Measures 5 5/16" capped, 6 5/8" posted. Lever filler. Earlier production with smooth gold filled overlay and clip marked 18k gold filled. The '1/2' designation marks the slender model, though the overlay adds a nice girth to this full-length pen. A nice text/video review of this model by Brian Anderson: http://blog.andersonpens.com/favorite-pens-waterman-0552-12-overlay/ The proper 14k Ideal #2 nib on this pen is quite a writer, laying down a smooth and consistent F/EF line that flexes to a BBB+? with modest pressure. Perfect for Copperplate and Spencerian writing styles (see writing sample).

Condition: No chips, or cracks. No threading or nib issues. All parts present and correct. As Brian mentions, it's particularly difficult to find thee smooth overlays in good condition, since they're especially prone to conspicuous dents and brassing. This one is exceptionally fine, as can be gathered from the photos, in which I've tried to capture all sides of the pen. As you can see, no serious dents. And no brassing but for two small spots on each side of the globe on the lever and a spot around the 'W' on the personal engraving. The engraving is a quite elegant, and I share the view that it enriches one's sense for the history of the pen. There does appear to be a handful of raised "dots" here and there on the overlay – hard to notice since they are of the same color. Never seen this before. But if I were to guess I'd say they are artifacts of the manufacturing process, since they resemble tiny droplets of gold solidly affixed to the overlay. Numbering is worn away from the end of the barrel but the imprint on the side is sound and fully legible. Re-sacced in the last month and guaranteed to fill and write as designed.

2. Conklin Crescent-Filler #30. Measures 5 1/2" capped, 6 3/4" posted. Crescent filler. Black chased hard rubber, wave pattern. The #30 is the same size as the #20/2NL – the common Conklin counterpart to Waterman's #52 – but features a larger nib. And whew what a nib! The proper Conklin Toledo #3 lays down a smooth and consistent XF/XXF line that flexes to BB+?. Slightly less flexible than the Waterman above, but even more of a joy to write with in my view owing to its needle-thin hairlines and responsivity. As you can see from the writing sample, the nib snaps back from full flex quite smartly, giving the writer more control over the width of his/her line in the process of forming letters. If I didn't already own a couple of Conklin Crescents with nibs exhibiting these characteristics, this one would be remaining in the collection.

Condition: No chips or cracks. No threading or nib issues. All parts present and correct. Spot of brassing on the bottom front of the clip, and a spot on each side near the top (indiscernible from the front). Chasing is slightly worn, as is the imprint, which is nonetheless fully legible. Lock ring can be a little hard to turn with the fingers at times, but a fingernail to the edge for leverage does the trick. Re-sacced in the last month and guaranteed to fill and write reliably.
