Which size vintage (pre~1960) Pelikan nib would fit a modern M101N section and feed?

There are several possibilities. The best (closest to original) would be a Pelikan 100N nib. But in this case, you will have to change the feeder and collar of the unit. That's why I would recommend an early Pelikan 400 nib unit (nib without logo, just plain Pelikan script) which can be used without any customisation. Of course, a Pelikan 140 nib unit would fit as well, but the smaller nib wouldn't look too good on the M101.

Edit: Answer to the original question: a Pelikan 400 nib will fits best.

PS: I did the same a couple of years ago on a Jade Green Limited Editon pen:

So how many of these reproduction M101N-style pens have been made? I was only aware of three: the brown tortoise, the lizard and the red tortoise.

right.
There was a limited special series of the lizard too with metal cap top.
But the others came as a not limited edition. I don't know how many were made but guess that it's quite a lot.
These M101N are not as close to the original as the series "Originals of they time" were.
That's why I prefer vintage ones. They are authenic and cheaper, but great users. But I think we should continue this back channel...

Today at the Columbus Ohio Pen Show, the modern nib unit was removed from my new repro brown and tortoise M101N, and in its place a vintage firm EF 14k M400 nib, feed and collar were installed. Very cool!

Not to hijack the thread too much, but is there any difference between the nibs themselves on the 100N and the early 400s?

Looks great Fred.
Just to be precise: your vintage nib unit is from a 400 (1950-1965), not a M400 (1982-today).
Have fun!
