Just wondering: can a 147 nib unit be swapped onto a 146 and en vice versa?

That is a very definite maybe. The issue are all the variations on feeds and collars that Montblanc has used over the years. The newest versions have swappable nibs with an o-ring but before that there were at least four different non-compatible versions. Without detailed knowledge of which versions were in the two pens there is simply no way to tell.
