This should be easy for everyone to contribute, even the silent-types.

Tell us about the one pen that you're most excited about in 2016.

Excited to have bought, traded, sold, received as a gift, whatever... but it must happen in 2016.

Let's go!

I think my best buy of 2016 was this a Diplomat Embassy from what I recall it was February 2016 was when it landed. I'm not normally one for pretty pens but this one is a bit of an exception.

I'm going to kick off, and I'm going to cheat by nominating two pens. It's a tie between the Guider Zimbo and the new Pelikan m400 tortoise with broad italic nib.

1http://i.imgur.com/3xPf3tWl.jpg
That's the Zimbo in the middle, and what does it for me? the colour, the colour, the colour. Plus it looks like a Vacumatic that ate too much. But what fantastic colour! It's not a bad writer either.

And the Pelikan... no picture because I'm not supposed to have opened it yet. But the nib is something special!

(Well, I *was* going to kick off, but I spent so long finding the pic on Imgur that two people beat me to it by the time I pressed the button. Competitive forum, this!)

I only have a photo with two, but the one on the right, the Montblanc 146 90th Anniversary Rose Gold is my pick for 2016, though the competition was fierce.

First because it was my grail pen for a long time and I found it available at a price I could reach at the DC Show. Second, the nib is wonderful, most of all because it is the most comfortable pen in my hand that I've ever used. I know that's more a matter of happenstance and physiognomy, but it really makes it for me. But like I said, I have at least two others that could have been selected if we had more leeway.

Tough decision but I went with the Edison extended mina in caribbean swirl only because I have been wanting this pen for several years. There are a couple of others that all tie for 2nd place however.

I was very excited to receive a Lamy 2000. It is a superb design that deserves its icon status. If I had acquired this early on I may never have looked at other pens, and I almost certainly wouldn't have made the disastrous journey through the awful vintage pens that I did.

Then, recently, I bought a Pilot Decimo for under $100 brand new with converter. What a fantastic design that is too.

However, my most bittersweet moment came with the completion of a custom pen. I waited very patiently nearly 8 months for it, only to discover I had made a poor design choice. Now I have to wait a further 7 months to have this corrected. It's a beautiful pen, one that really suits my hand.

Honourable mentions go to; the Pilot Custom 823 - a superb writer every day; a Pilot Custom Heritage 912 FA - such a fun pen to use; and a vintage Aurora 88p - the only working vintage pen I have left.

The Graf von Faber Casteel Walden Woods was my favorite this year!

The surprise was that it writes perfectly! Nothing needed. Graf just does it right!

My favorite pen of 2016 has to be my Nakaya Neo Standard. It was a custom order, so it's personalized and meaningful. It was also a long wait, so I was excessively excited when it arrived. It's been inked up and in my pen case every day since I received it.

A friend of mine at work just acquired a Bulkfiller. The titanium furniture and nib is lovely and it is as smooth a nib as I have written with. They really are a custom pen in every regard and the filling mechanism is radically cool1

Sailor King of Pen Green Mozaique, Broad nib.

This is special for me for 2016 as I had no intention of purchasing any Sailor pen . . . until this came up for sale and I was smitten. The nib is incredibly smooth and writes like the perfect (for me) medium.

Close second was another impulse buy, an LE Conway Stewart Wellington White Swirl in medium.

But then again, I only started on this collection journey this year so I guess all my pens are special in one way or another :crazy_pilot:

I spent far too much and bought too many pens... of course! I'm not sure I actually remeber them all, because the ones that come to mind are all fairly recent purchases.

Probably the favorite was the Pelikan M800 Stresemann. On the vintage side, I got a cute little Parker with a flexy nib that I'm enjoying a lot right now. But I really enjoy variety. Just yesterday I was grading final exams and used a different pen for each of the problems.

As soon as I saw the title to this thread, I knew the answer. It's my Centropen 100820. It's a vintage fountain pen from early 1960s Czechoslovakia. It's a gorgeous celluloid material, a unique case very evocative of the time and place, and even has a companion pencil. It is also by far the most flexible nib I've ever handled.

http://squirrelscience.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Centropen-Branding.jpg

This isn't my best writing sample. But, I wrote it on a receipt to show the outstanding flexibility of the nib. It is supposed to vary between "fine" and "triple broad". As far as I can tell, it does. The pen flexes and writes a good line with very little railroading or trouble of any kind. In truth, writing with this pen feels like I'm using a brush. It's that flexible. It's stunning. I thought I had a light touch with fountain pens, but I really had to relearn that with this pen.

http://squirrelscience.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Writing.jpg

And here is the nib in question.

Check out the video at 3:20 for a closeup, in slow motion, of the nib in action.

Thank you! I ordered it through Classic Fountain Pens (nibs.com). I gave them the specs of what I wanted. They handled placing the order directly with Nakaya. I could have ordered directly through Nakaya's website, but I was a little more comfortable having a middle-man as CFP is a Nakaya vendor and is certainly familiar with processes and definitely names and phone numbers at Nakaya to make sure everything goes smoothly.

That's pretty cool! I like the generous ink view window. I've seen too many where it's just a tiny band. It's nice being able to see the ink clearly, and also to know when you're running low.

I was allowed to choose a gift so this is the only pen for 2016: Sheaffer Balance in the most incredible green acrylic (celluloid?) from member blopplop's collection. The picture below barely comes close to exhibiting the beauty of this pen. Excited about its good looks, and the fact someone would grant me such a fine gift; it is not something I could have bought for myself this year.

Nothing amazing in pens but my special pen this year is my 1977 Pilot murex stainless steel pen with integrated nib. Only recently having come across vintage pilots I am blown away by the simplicity and elegance of the designs. It writes like a dream and is so strong and light. For me it is the "Great White" of my pens as the ribbed section, streamlined body and curve of the nib remind me of the body, gills and jaw line of the shark!

I would have to say my MontBlanc 147! Since I just started the hobby, I only have low-end pens, except for that MB, wich belonged to my father and was gifted to me as soon as he found out my interest for FP's. I actually don't care much for the "cartridge-only" filling mechanism, and cleaning it sucks, but it has one of the most gorgeous nibs I've seen and it writes like butter, no to say the sentimental value!

My most exciting pen for 2016 remains a pen that still has my best nib, an early Sheaffer Balance long oversize with an EF flex nib. But the most interesting pen that came into my collection during 2016 is a vintage Osmia in silver-ray celluloid with a 14k Supra F nib. I was dubious about the different pattern of the cap and barrel, but Osman tells me it's correct. I have yet to write with it, so that'll wait until 2017. :-)

I don't know if "exciting" is quite the right word. But then, I'm not very excitable.

But this Mabie Todd Swan 3150 is winning me over. I've had it for a couple of years, and didn't care for the way the nib was worn. So this year I decided to splurge and send it out to John Mottishaw to see what he could do with it. Got it back a bit earlier than expected. I have a note on my calendar that he had promised it in February of next year, but I actually received it in early November.

It's now something I want to write with all the time. The best indication of that is that it hasn't been empty a full day since I got it, either four or five fills. I did rinse it out once, to change the Akkerman's ink referenced in the picture to Pilot Blue-Black. And I just filled it again about an hour ago. The nib is not some special grind, either, just a normal symmetrical medium nib. But the way it feels when I write is special.

My most exciting pens of 2016 are rather mundane, having started down the vintage road a bit, I'm finding a lot of fun in learning to repair/restore some older pens, mostly just re-saccing so far, an Esterbrook LJ and a Waterman/Alco early Skywriter. I have a couple of Snorkels (a Special & Admiral) that I'm working on currently, plus a Triumph Lifetime Vac Fill on deck and a lovely Burnham B59 that should be arriving in the next day or so. For the most part, I'd say the most exciting pen is almost always the one that's about to arrive!

Aquiring my first vintage OMAS pen--however tiny it may be--was the highlight of my pen-year. The highly responsive and capable flex nib certainly makes it one hell of an exciting writer, and the quintisentially italian design never wanes in its beauty. Only my Torelli/Parker "51" 'full' flighter comes close in the overall sense of this topic, and as it is my first custom pen (even though it's only really semi-custom), many would expect it to be at the top of this list. It is absolutely the best Parker "51", if not daily carry pen, that I've ever owned, but actually writing with it is too natural--it is perfectly balanced and just glides over the paper, but it fails to make writing an event like the OMAS does.

I would say that my most anticipated pen last year was the Scriptorium custom pen I ordered. But I also acquired a few Diamond Points that I like and use. The Lamy Safari Dark Lilac continues to be a favorite, as does the nice vintage Skyline I got from Midnight Pens (a Demi Dubonnet with a red/green striped top).

Two other pens I use frequently (though I did not acquire them this past year) was a Sailor 1911 red and black pen and a Pilot Custom 91 which was one of the first used pens I bought. What made them my favorites this year was that I sent them to Dan Smith for nib work (he reground them from plain EF nibs to Cursive Italic), and now I use them quite frequently.

Unless there's a miracle and I take delivery today or tomorrow of a couple pens I'm waiting on, then my most exciting pen is a Pelikan M1000. I guess ordering pens from overseas after Christmas isn't too smart. Bright side is I'm starting 2017 strong.

I have a 147 Traveler also and have thoroughly enjoyed it.

Congratulations! I don't know if you are aware, but Montblanc made a nice leather case especially for the Traveler. Very nice!

It holds the pen and 6 cartridges.

Yeah! I have seen this case online, and it looks gorgeus! But I guess my father lost his, or wanted to keep it, LOL! He's not a FP addict, but keeps some MB's limited editions at hand. So, probably kept the case for him self! Still, can't complaint here! It's my first gold nib!

An unexpected purchase of a Montblanc Ultra Black! My big purchase was an et noir in coral, but the Ultra Black is a very nice writer and a sharp looker.

How's the ultra black? I havent seen one in person. Is it a rubberized coating on the pen to give it the matte look?

Absolutely! If that Traveler is your first gold nib it is going to be a hard one to beat for your second!

My favorite, most exciting pen in 2016 was my Pink Pelikan M600, the "girly" fountain pen. It's special to me, because I am a very girly girl, and I love pink. (Although I can hang with the guys and love football, too!) It was my 2nd Pelikan, and my 1st Pelikan with a gold nib; my first was the Green Marble M200 in EF.

I got the Pink M600 in a F, and the nib turned out to be rather a blob; just a big, sloppy nib. But that didn't alter my love for Pelikans and especially for that pen. I took it to my first pen show, the 2016 Colorado Pen Show, and had it custom ground to a stub. Now I'm in love with how that pen writes! It remains my favorite pen; special because it's the most feminine thing I own, plus it's a great writer, as well. I even mixed a custom ink for it: 75% J. Herbin Rouille d'Ancre and 25% J. Herbin Rouge Bourgogne. I call it my "Dusty Rose" mix. In my Pink Pelikan M600 custom-ground stub, it shades all OVER the place!

How about some writing samples with your custom ink (with the pen, of course).

For me it was this guy. I had wanted one in mint condition for ages and I managed to snag one for a good price in the middle of the year. It sits proudly on display in cabinet and I love to admire the gorgeous celluloid pattern.

I did not buy a lot of pens in 2016 but one that came in December really impressed me. I purchased it from Lexaff and it has been a joy to use. It is a Rotring Stylograph franken pen with a Reform nib that has a stubby character.

Was it a simple installation of a correct size friction-fit or threaded section with feed and nib?

You would have to ask Lexaff to be certain as he shipped it as shown. I would guess that you are correct but I am just guessing.

The most exciting pen i bought in 2016? That's a tough call as i bought so many! For me, it would have to be the Pelikan M400 Brown Tortoise. It's just stunning and I it very difficult to put it down. Love the finish, love the smooth, wet, broad line. It sits perfectly in my hand (which is a surprise, as I'm 6'5 and was sure the pen would be too small for me). There's not really a single thing I can complaint about it.

Inked up with Diamine Autumn Oak, it's a match made in heaven.

My best purchases were, I think, a beautiful Hakase from Richard Binder, and a Doric set from Syd Saperstein.

According to Franklin Christoph it is "High Performance Steel", but what that actually means is another question. There are a wide variety of different types of steel available, suitable for various applications, with varying cost. No doubt some are more suited to nib-making than others.

I had a busy 2016 with a few very nice pens... but the one stand out to me was my custom Ken Cavers sasutake bamboo pen with an 18K broad nib.
Not only is it beautiful but the work he did on the nib was fantastic. It is a great writer, one of those pens that when you start writing with it you don't want to stop.

Concerning the MB et Noir, the writing experience does not compare to a normal MB such as a LeGrand. The pen is small and does not post. That said, I really like the weight. It has heft which balances the unposted pen. The nib is beautiful, incredibly beautiful. However, the nib is dry and has a scratchy sound on paper. This is not scratchy like unaligned tines; it's the quality of the nib. I hope this helps. If you are looking for a writer, choose another pen, such as the Montblanc Ultra Black. I purchased it after the et Noir and it's awesome. If you want an eye catcher, the et Noir is for you!

The ultra black is great. The texturized barrel is surprisingly pleasing. It doesn't distract from the pen. I thought the metal section would be a problem, but it's not. Another member commented that the metal is probably needed due to the ink well causing ink to soak up to the coating on the pen.
