I was thinking the same here, Jar! LOL
I already have 2 jobs, and still can't handle that...

Breathtaking! A work of art, to be sure, but I'd be afraid to use it, let alone fill it with ink.

Sorry, but to me, that's a vulgar western perversion of an eastern art, and I like Pelikan pens.

Fred.... do you always apologize for your opinions?

That is the perversion to me.

prepare for future purchases: get a job with a pen retailer/importer.

This is totally on my radar too. But there's a few in this range that are. Decisions like this are hard! [emoji24]. Probably need to work like 2-4 jobs to get them all lol.

It's nice but at that sort of money most of them will probably sit in their boxes and not be used on a daily basis. I think it is indeed a work of art but I like to feel comfortable using my pens regularly and bonding with them and I would be afraid to with this. It is like that Japanese art pen whose name I forget.

Why do you think such pens do not get used?

I use every pen I acquire. Ink them up and lay down your thoughts on the best of papers and journals.

Should I be so lucky to do so with this one, in 10 years I will surely post an update. At least that would be my plan.

Life is way to short to worry about anything outside of using, loving, and enjoying what you purchase. I love fountain pens!!! I deeply enjoy writing / journaling with them. Sharing the joys of everything that will not penish! Who really cares about anything outside of that? Write! Bleed your thoughts onto exquisite papers with a world class writing instrument! There is truly nothing better!

Except to remember: Sharing a sorrow is 1/2 the sorrow. Sharing a joy is twice the joy!

That is the perversion to me.

You post, you invite response. Some like that pen. I don't. That's all there is to it. Chill.

Besides, you wrote something to the effect that my opinion gave you reason not to buy it anyway. If you've changed your mind again, buy it and enjoy it.

Fred

My question in the original post was "is it bad" to get a second job to support my pen addiction. Not your acidic opinion that my choice was a "vulgar western perversion".

There is always one on every forum that feels their opinions are wanted when they are not.

I am formally requesting that you do NOT post any responses on any of my posts here. I do NOT invite your response now or in the future and as I research through this site it appears I am in good company.

I will purchase it if and when I desire to do so.

That's not the way internet forums work. If you are too sensitive to read responses that don't agree with you, put the respective forum members (i.e., me) on your ignore list.

No Fred. I am not too sensitive to read responses that don't agree with me, however it angers me to read responses from small people that love to piss on the joy of other people. Do your own research. You appear to be the curmudgeon of this forum and have been for some time.

I will ignore you from this point on. Not worth my time.

This is a handsome Maki-e pen.
Have you also seen the Sailor Seasons Under the Stars LE series?
Those are also beautiful.

@Jar I am probably just thinking about collectors who I think are the intended market for this pen. I would be too worried about damaging it but I guess you are right and people will use them.

Just some information about such pens so maybe people look beyond the beauty to the inherent utility and understand these are objects meant to be used.

Urushi is really hard and has been used for millennia to protect surfaces that get exposed to wear and weathering. It is used to cover statues and buildings and dishes and lunch boxes and tables and tea chests and cabinets and furniture and scabbards and helmets and armor and fans and paintings and room dividers and even bicycles (http://www.designfather.com/vanhulsteijn-x-sothebys-urushi-bicycle-project/). It is impervious to most stains, most chemicals and even sunlight simply causes it to fade.

Urushi is tough stuff.

The things embedded in the urushi are pretty well protected.

The one additional thing is that urushi is what is called a "Living surface". By that what is meant is that with use the surface changes and improves. Oils and friction from holding and using them simply burnish the surface, aging it and increasing the depth and beauty.

Google "covered in urushi (https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1438&bih=1016&q=covered+in+urushi&oq=covered+in+urushi&gs_l=img.3...2480.9347.0.10083.17.9.0.8.8.0.154.95 0.4j5.9.0....0...1ac.1.64.img..0.13.964...0j0i30k1 j0i5i30k1j0i24k1.E42g2XUfyZ4)" in images and look at the objects and what you will see is the wide variety of everyday stuff covered in lacquerware.

If stealing could even be considered, this one would be my target;

Beautiful pen. I'd love one....or two and I already work a second job!

If I were able to acquire one, I'd have to ink it up ASAP. To each his/her own but I'd consider it a crime to never get the chance to use it. Perhaps maybe not a daily carry pen but at least in the house. :-)

Maki-e seems to be exploding almost everywhere on the pen scene. Even some of the American, independent pen makers are doing it.
