Hey Everyone,

I purchased a leather journal cover a couple years ago and it's starting to get a little dinged up as well as dry and crack. I'd like to find a way to keep it in good shape. I'm not very knowledgeable in leather upkeep so I was hoping I could get some insight from those of you who do. Do you have any recommendations on leather conditioners or ways to keep leather in good shape? Thanks!

I use saddle soap to clean leather and apply mink oil to keep leather supple. I have seen some in the planner community use hand cream, Nivea brand, on their planners with success. I tried it once and it worked fine. Just note that using mink oil will darken the leather.

I use 100% pure neatsfoot oil. I let it soak in, and then reapply. It will soak up the oil after a while. I usually put two coats on, let it soak, and then I buff it. It will make the leather soft. If you don't want it very soft, then use something else.

I use leather cream in a neutral colour. Similar to the stuff you can buy for shoes and bags. :)

I've used mink oil with very good results. Before applying, use a cleaner - car leather cleaner works for me.

+1 for Chamberlain's Leather Milk. Won't weaken the leather or attract dirt like oils can.

My favorite is Hydrophane Hydrolan it has some bees wax in it so it gives a nice shine as well. It is made in the UK. Other products that do very well are Effax leather balm and Passier lederbalsam. Neatsfoot oil will rot the thread over time so soaking leather with stitching in it is not a long term fix. An equestrian here who has to keep tack tip top and need to use leather care products regularly. All of these products will darken the leather.

I have used this as a top coat on walking boots already waterproofed with Nikwax and polished with Altberg's Ledergris -

I agree. Have been using it for years.
If the leather is cracked, there is nothing to ‘heal’ the cracks but treating the leather will keep the cracks from getting worse or new ones started.

Should I be treating my Traveler's Notebook covers?

If it gets really dirty, like if you take it on a lot of dusty trails, might be a good idea do get a leather cleaner and follow that with a leather conditioner. Chamberlain's No. 2 cleaner is great. Follow it up with Chamberlain's No. 1 conditioner.

Otherwise conditioning it if the leather looks dry or lusterless.

Cracks can't be healed but scuffs can be made less obvious by applying the right leather dye (assuming the original colour is one you can get a matching dye for). I use Fiebing's, and I think Meltonian also has similar products.

Lots of really good advice here. I may try a few of the products mentioned. I have used 'hide food' (brand name - beeswax and lanolin are the main ingredients), and olive oil (for very large leather suitcases). Oil needs to be applied, left for a while and then buffed to remove any excess or it becomes a real dirt magnet.

I just use the same Frye brand leather conditioner that I use on my cowboy boots and leather bags. Not sure the exact name, but it’s in a round brown tin, and you can find it on Amazon. You spread a good amount on with a cloth (I use an old T-shirt) then buff it in.

https://saphir.com/product/renovateur-cream/ This is THE company for the best products for the care of leather shoes, but they are expensive. I would recommend Bickmore Bick 4 leather conditioner. Cleans and conditions leather. You can use this product on all leather products: shoes, jackets, wallets, etc. and it is a reasonably priced product.
