Offered for sale is a Pelikan 400NN Tortoiseshell Brown fountain pen in outstanding condition (well preserved, some signs of use and wear). I believe this pen dates from the late 1950s to the mid 1960s. It features a 14k gold broad nib that is nice and springy, and its piston mechanism works smoothly. It also has the thread lock safety (a slight resistance in the middle of tightening the cap, indicating the presence of this safety feature which prevents the cap from unscrewing itself in a pocket or case). The back of the barrel is engraved with a company name: "GUTEHOFFNUNGSHUTTE". Based on my research, this pen was likely given to an employee. The engraving is noticeable but not super bright depending on the light.

The cap lip is engraved GERMANY and PELIKAN 400. The barrel has marvelous transparency.

This pen has some minor condition issues:
- light brassing of the cap lip and clip ring;
- very fine ring scratches from the cap screwing onto the barrel;
- the yellow/gold filler of the finial Pelikan engraving is mostly faded, but the engraving itself is in great shape.

My price is NOW $200$300, which includes shipping within the continental U.S. via USPS Priority Mail.

Please don't hesitate to contact with questions or offers!

The presence of the 'Secure Lock' cap can narrow the dating of the pen down to around 1958. The feature was implemented circa 1958 on the Pelikan 120, 140 and 400NN but wasn't produced for a very long time.

Really beautiful 400NN, the honey colored striations with some red in-between truly makes this pen look spectacular. And the old piston design where the piston almost retracts fully into its housing allows for a MASSIVE ink capacity (unlike the modern M400s. Whoever buys this will be really happy, good luck selling :)

Thank you for that information, fascinating that the secure lock was only used on these pens for such a short time!
