I'm a noob. What's the deal with these pens? They're beautiful but expensive. Are they relatively desireable/collectible? Thanks.

I tried to answer (http://willvintage.nextcoder.com/2016/10/11/the-road-to-a-nakaya-fountain-pen/) questions similar to yours. Hope it helps.

Will, that is a really splendid essay. Well-written and organized, and well-documented with your photos. Elegant, like the pen.

Nice work bro. I see one in my near future.

Bear in mind that these are pens not in plentiful supply. Classic Fountain Pens in LA is the main US representative, and they usually have some in stock, but if there is a model or style you want that isn't, it may be a wait of weeks or months. Hand-made pens with time-consuming methods, which is but one reason for the interest in them.

Also, they really do also work as an everyday pen in most professions. There are a few I might not consider great environments for a Nakaya but not many. If "I'm a Lumberjack and I'm okay..." is your profession maybe something else might serve you better.

A couple things to know.

The pen in the essay above (really well done by the way) is a single threaded cap. It takes like a Brazillion turns to cap or uncap. Other models take less than two turns.

The cap lips are super thin. Don't try to post a Nakaya.

But yes, there should be at least one in your future.

I'm afraid to dip my toe into the Nakaya pool. I love pens that write well, and I sense these might be a pricey thing once started. Just one? Yeah, riiiight.

Just another point. Each pen is individually hand made and so even within the same model there will be variations in weight, dimensions and the actual color of the urushi.

Yup. Mine took 6 months to arrive.

Thanks for all the feed back everyone. Which model should I consider for my first? I'm a fan of big pens!

Depends on what you are looking for, I like the shape of the portable and ordered that first. I have a long and it is certainly a longer pen than the portable yet very comfortable to write with. I find the decapod/decapod twist a little on the small side to write with for my hand. I would look at the 17mm portable for a 149 sized grip section if that is what you prefer.

Tx. I prefer the 149/homo sapiens size.

Nice looks like the portable write is quite the large pen despite the having the title of Portable.

For size comparison, here is my Naka-Ai compared to my other pens (notice the Parker 51 on the far right).
It may looked big, but in real life, it's a comfortable size for writing, and my hand size is medium, not small, not huge either.

I do apologize, almost all of my pens are vintage, so this may not be as useful as I thought it would be :)

Nice pics. But since you can't post Nakayas, it would be more informative to have comparison photos of uncapped pens.

Pelikan M800 or M100? Sorry I'm relatively new to FP's.

As I said, the one thing you need to be aware of is that the Neo-Standard is a single threaded cap and takes a brazillion turns to cap or uncap. The other models take less than two turns.

Because they happened to be on my desk waiting to be cleaned out...

Visconti HS Bronze Maxi vs. Nakaya Neo Standard. Similar in size, but the HS is easily twice the weight...because rock.

I think a lot of the HomoSapiens' weight is due to the metal fittings.
The Bronze Age is only 6g heavier than a Crystal so the Lava resin doesn't add that much more weight and maybe some of it is attributed to bronze/brass vs steel/chrome too.

I didn't know the crystal limited editions were also heavy. I picked one up once, but didn't have the lava variety with me to compare. It makes sense that the trim rings and clip would add weight. I didn't think they would be responsible for that much of it. Learning new things every day :).
