I am kicked out of the forum and have to sign in again after a short time, 10-30 minutes. I couldn't find a setting for that function. How can I stay logged in?

There should be a little box with "Remember Me?" next to it - tick it.

Why are you getting kicked out? What device and contact method are you using?

What device? A laptop. I was here this morning writing a post, left the page for FIVE MINUTES and when I went to post it, I was no longer logged in, even though before I tried to post, it looked as though I was signed in. This is the only forum on which I have this problem. I had it also when I signed up last year.

I'll try the 'remember me' button. Thanks.

Are you connecting through a home wireless network?

Does your laptop enter some sleep mode?

I'm also getting logged out after a very short period of in activity or when composing a post. Shouldn't there be a setting allowing users to vary the log out time? I know there were board I belonged to in the past where members could adjust the log-out time. When I check in at work I end up having to log back in every time I come back to a post.

There isn't a user-configurable option; it's set for the entire forum.

But you may have a corrupted cookie. Try this:

Log off (make sure you know your log in)
Clear your web browser's cache
Delete FPG cookies
Completely shut down your web browser, including any open windows or tabs, and Quitting.
Log back on, making sure you have clicke the tiny check box that says "Keep me logged in"

I have found that the site just looks like it logs you out sometimes. I hit the "what's new" link at the top and everything goes back to being logged in.

At home, clicking the "keep me logged in" box is alright, but at work I'm on a shared computer.

I know in the past some phpbb platforms I've belonged to allowed individual users to set the log-out time after a period of inactivity. It's a pain for me since I often have to stop in mid post to actually do some work ;) then if I'm not paying attention I will lose a post I was writing.

Me, too. And when I tried just now to post a message here, I was told I am not permitted to do that but must log in. In all of these experiences I find that the list of current users still includes me. I don't think I ought to have to do anything complicated with my browser settings. It doesn't happen every time I try to do anything at FPG. But it does make me feel that Wim over at the other place has something to be said for him. A good nanny doesn't keep losing the children in her charge, and FPG does keep losing me.

Hi! I'm your Virtual Wim!! Wim says "Try clearing browser cache, temp files, history and cookies".

Because, let's face it, you know he always does... ;)

Is the following the fix? Another FPGeek has emailed me because he is unable to gain access with his ID and password, and I am looking for the solution. I've copied the following and emailed it to him, but the rest of this thread doesn't make this look all that promising.

I searched for this problem because a friend of mine experienced it while using FPG. In the event you're using Firefox, you should adjust your privacy and tracking settings

It’s been a while since the last posting on this thread, but I’ve signed in four times in the last hour. That shouldn’t happen. Also, in the off-chance that someone is reading this, how can I add my avatar? I’ve looked through all the profile buttons on my screen name, but nothing seems to point me in the right direction. I’m sure there’s a simple solution, but I’m just unable to find it. Can someone please help? Thanks in advance.

Copy and paste from the answer page:

How do I set signatures, avatars and profile pictures?

You can set and change your signature, avatar and profile picture in the User Control Panel (providing the administrator has made these options available).

For signatures, click on 'Edit Signature' under the 'Settings and Options' area of the navigation bar within the User CP.

To select an existing or upload a new avatar, click on 'Edit Avatar'.

To upload a profile picture, click on 'Edit Profile Picture' in the 'Your Profile' section.

I cannot recall where the User Control Panel is. If I find it, I'll edit this.

Found it! And it's not called the User Control Panel. Click on Settings in the upper right hand corner. Then on the left in a panel called My Settings you will see a link to Edit Avatar. Go for it!
