Massive mystery sea creature washes onshore in Indonesia (https://www.yahoo.com/news/massive-mystery-sea-creature-washes-124747029.html)

I'm not saying it's from R'lyeh (http://mentalfloss.com/article/59676/weird-physics-hp-lovecrafts-corpse-city-rlyeh), but I'm not claiming it isn't...

This (https://arxiv.org/pdf/1210.8144.pdf) is genius!

Looks like the carcass of a giant squid (not that I've seen one :) ).

What makes me wonder is why washed ashore, not sinking into the depths. Some islands in Maluku are world-famous for deep-sea divers, so some of those divers may have recently seen this "monster" when it's still alive.

For a long time, the only evidence we had of giant squid were those carcasses that washed up on a beach. It's only recently that anyone has been able to capture footage of them live.

"C.U.T.", the Cthulic Unified Theory rallies scientists to further explore the possibility that time dilation allows Cthulhu to only look like it's dead.

But you know it's down there someplace.

Love me some H.P. Lovecraft!

For anyone interested in cephalopods, I recommend the recent book by Peter Godfrey Smith, *Other Minds: The Octopus, the Sea and the Deep Origins of Consciousness.*. From my scuba diving days I can attest that squid and octopus are very intelligent critters, indeed.

Lovecraft fans might be interested in the work of Victor Lavalle. I enjoyed his book Black Tom and I'm looking forward to The Changeling.

Here's an NPR interview wherein he discusses his conflicted feelings about Lovecraft: http://www.npr.org/2016/02/29/468558238/the-ballad-of-black-tom-offers-a-tribute-and-critique-of-lovecraft

The reading I've done and research studies I've seen demonstrate that as well. In fact, an ongoing problem with animal behaviorists is trying to figure out just *how* to gauge these slippery creatures' intelligence. One marine biologist quipped that octopuses may well be the closest thing to alien life we'll ever see, because they are so utterly unlike anything else on this planet.
