Hi all. First post here. There have been rumblings in the other forum which led to the expulsion or temporary banning of some of my favorite posters. This has left me sad and with a bitter taste in the mouth. For these reasons, I spent several days thinking about what actions to take including ceasing my posts. Instead, I have decided to be constructive and to post here as well, as long as the posts are welcome.

Here is the back story. I like pens, inks and dabble in doodles. Since I am no great writer (My journals would read like a laundry list of routines. I woke up. brushed my teeth, ate breakfast, went to work.. You get the idea.), I decided to transcribe and illustrate the Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce. He was a columnist and journalist from the late 1800's/early 1900's who had a wonderfully cynical outlook of life. Many of his "definitions" still are relevance in the present. That way I get to test inks, play with my pens, learn italic script (Getty and Dubay's Write On taught me), and better at drawing.

Respectfully yours,
Plistumi

Hi Plistumi and welcome to the FPG forum.
Great drawing and lettering. The ink is a very attractive colour as is your pen.

I was just listening to an Ambrose Bierce story "The Damned Thing" on the HP Lovecraft Literary Podcast on the weekend.

Not at all, I forgot to ID the material. The pen is a Bexley Americana Sierra Silver and the ink is Iroshizuku Fugu-syogun. I got the sample from a fellow pen enthusiast from the SF Pen Posse. I think I am sold on the ink.

Thank you all for the effusive welcome. There will be more to come, in fact, 19 more letters. Today's contributions are: GORGON and GOUT.

BTW: She made herself somewhat famous in the latest issue of "The Pennant".

What? You aren't a member of the Pen Collectors of America (https://www.pencollectorsofamerica.com/)? For a very low yearly membership, you get this great magazine 3 times a year, access to all kinds of information online - especially helpful to people with interests in vintage pens - and in general, help the pen community at large.

Quite worthwhile, and now with Added Plistumi!

plistumi

... but what covers are you using for your notebook? I noticed you have a couple at least.. brown and black....

The "brown" cover is from Renaissance Art (http://www.renaissance-art.com) the color is orange rust. It is really soft. They call the product the Moleskine Cahier Cover. The other cover is actually mustard yellow on the outside and black on the inside. It is from Oberon Design (http://oberondesign.com). The product is called Pocket Moleskine Cover. My particular design is the Van Gogh Sky. Both journal covers are wonderful.

Todays's word is GHOUL. I decided to go vintage today. The pen is a Wahl Eversharp Doric with an adjustable nib. It is a wonderful pen. The ink is DeAtramentis Lilac. It is scented.

The wonderment continues. The Patchouli ink is an interesting colour. Neat pen too.

plistumi
April 30th, 2013, 07:19 AM
Bogon7, Patchouli is indeed an interesting ink. I could not decide whether it falls into the brownish-burgundy or reddish-brown category. It is so similar to the Noodler's Galileo Manuscript Brown that I will call it a reddish-brown. Smells good, like patchouli as it is one of the DeAtramentis scented inks.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8394/8694917951_c95bf33773_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/69334333@N00/8694917951/)

Anyways, for a somewhat alphabetical sake, the next word is GUILLOTINE. I drew this one last summer and am putting it up for continuity's sake. That was before I realized that it is better not to sketch on lined paper. I may redraw this one. (groan and the others in that journal). Ethernautrix, care for a journal?

Plistumi thanks for the comparison between Noodler's Galileo Manuscript Brown and DeAtramentis Patchouli.

I really like how consistance your lettering is.

Funny that you don't much notice the lines when you are sketching or drawing until you've finished and then they attract your attention in the white space areas.

Fountainpenkid: Thanks! It was a funny idea that came pretty easily.

Today's word was fraught with treachery. I have had the damnedest time matching the ink to the pen. In fact, I consider it a failure. I wanted to use a blue ink so I used Iroshizuku Shin-Kai (Thank you Las Vegas Posse members for the sample ) which is kind of a greyish blue, but it is too dark. Actually, first I used that light blue ink on the left side. I aborted. In the spirit of matching the ink, I colored in some grey with Iroshizuku Kiri-same (Thank you Ether for the sample). Enjoy HEMP!

Great drawing and calligraphy, and a great text! More, please!
Another text about silly geese, a famous one that is set to music:

The silver swan, who living had no note,
When death approach'd, unlock'd her silent throat;
Leaning her breast against the reedy shore,
Thus sung her first and last, and sung no more.
Farewell, all joys; O Death, come close mine eyes;
More geese than swans now live, more fools than wise.

Well. This is the end of my vacation away from that dreadful winter. I have borrowed my mother's fountain pen for this and the previous entries. Today's word is IDIOT:

Oh, JonSzNTO. As one would say in today's lingo: Esties are Da Bomb! So here is another one, but in lavender. The bluish purple of the ink makes it look more pink, but it is lavender in real life.

Today's word is IMMIGRANT. I guess I am unenlightened by early 20th standards. Yes, I am an immigrant, hehehe.

It depends on what side of the bed I come out of. Sometimes I use the pens, sometimes I use brushes (like lately), sometimes a Q-tip will do the trick.

Crazyorange: I will likely go to the DC Show. It is fun. As for your other questions: Most of the time I pencil in before I draw. Coming up with the image for the illustration may take me minutes or days. I have been struggling with them lately. I strive to offend equally when I draw. As for the artistic bent, I have always liked doodling, and drawing, but I am not formally trained. It is on my bucket list, though.

ThriveToScribe: Ambrose Bierce is great. I am so very humbled at the knowledge he had. I find myself researching several of the words to gain a deeper understanding of what he meant and about how I can apply his "meanings" to our current situation.
