I'm not entirely sure how looking up Ink Wipe progressed to Marbled Papers.

I have a couple of Paperblanks Notebooks with marbled endpapers which are fascinating but this blog on Parvum Opus is full of information about the craft and types.

The first video is a concise introduction while the second is a real artistic production.
The forth with Curtis Finley of Pacific, Missouri is longer at 7+ mins and very informative.

This video is a hypnotic succession of marble paper patterns (7-8mins). So many variations and they all have different names.

I also understand that some people rescue old end papers from thrown out books.

If Brian Gray does a Ripple Ebonite LE pen he could commision some-one to do notebooks or box inserts with a similar marble pattern as a set. :)

I love marbled paper and rescued some from an old (circa 1900) dictionary recently. I used it to cover some matchboxes. The hand marbled papers in your link are exquisite.

I really want to try this! We have so many old books with this kind of thing at my house...and I've always wondered about how it was done. Thanks!

Can you use ink to make marbled paper?

It has to 'float' or at least stay suspended to work...being water-based, inks wouldn't work.

Thanks! I found an easy method I could do with materials I already had around the house and made a few sheets of marbled paper yesterday. They remind me of the sorts of arts & crafts projects your kids bring home that go on the refrigerator for display.... but it was fun and I want to make more.

Nice work JBB they look very interesting. Looking at the videos it seems there are so many styles of marbling paper and a large range of techniques to achieve certain effects. I can imagine how addictive it could be come.

One of the local art shops had a Paper & Linen Marbling kit for around $30 with colour paint and seizing and other stuff.

I was trying not to spend much money so after a bit of on-line searching I found out you could use a mixture of cornstarch & water to float your paints and alum for the mordant on your paper. Both of those are available at the supermarket. (Alum is used to make pickles.) :) You still need liquid acrylic paints but we had some of those already. It's really fun. I've written letters on a couple of pages that came out llight and used some of the brighter paper (cut in thirds) as letter wraps with sealing wax.

This picture looks better if you blow it up to full size:

Here is a short video done my some musicians I follow (and admire), using their music to document a local bookbindery that does their own Turkish marbling. Enjoy...

Amazing! And I'm the happy recipient of one of jbb's fantastic letters written with her ever-ready dip pen using her homemade iron gall ink on her handmade marbled paper. Fantastic, jbb! Thanks so much.
