Calligraphy is often taught by example, process, and practice; the student is given the finished example, then the method by how it is achieved, then the student must practice the process until they arrive at the desired result, making adjustments as necessary as they progress.

Moving on - once we have attained a level of experience in a range of styles, we should be able to look at an example of a [consistent] hand and break down the overall shape and strokes, and by practice be able to imitate a style of handwriting and in doing so, not only develop our own range of ability, but also our understanding of the dynamics which combine to create a certain effect e.g. speed, pressure, angle, lightness (or otherwise) of hold.

Try it;
take an example of a famous document or person's writing and either practice replicating individual words and letters freehand, or print a black and white copy of the sample hand and trace over it and try to achieve the same shape.
It may behoove you to identify the pen used e.g. flex or italic.

Happy writing ;)
