Here is a nicely preserved French Bakelite pen, I assume to be made in the early 1950's.
Like no other manufacturers, some french makers produced very nice raven black Bakelite for their fountain pens.
A pro for Bakelite is that it is very hard, so very resistand against scratches and dings and that is can be polished to a very high grade of shine.
A con is that it is quite brittle, so it can easily break in pieces when it is dropped to a hard surface.
This one survived, and with a little love and care it will stay functional for a long time to come.
Specifications:
Branded: '[101] ERSKINE 708 - Made in France' on the barrel.
Material: Barrel, cap and blind cap are made of raven black shiny Bakelite. Section and feeder are made of black ebonite/hard rubber.
Clip is chrome plate steel with some plating loss. Cap bands are gold plated brass.
Nib is steel, with the well known R engraved for 'Replacement', a nib that is often seen in 2nd tier French pens. Folded poin, no Iridium.
A little bit flexible fine to medium iridium pointed nib. (See writing sample in the pictures).
Filling system: Button filler with an new silicone ink sac.
Length capped: 124mm
Posted: 155mm
Without cap: 117mm
