1. 1920s Chilton Red Top (BCHR, pneumatic filler, GFT, 14k EF Semi-Flex nib). Not too often that Chiltons come up for sale in these parts. They're uncommon pens. And nothing beats the coolness factor of a pneumatic filler! Measures 4 7/8” capped and a lengthy 6 3/4” posted. This pen was re-sacced and its nib replaced and adjusted by Ron Zorn in the summer, so it’s ready to fill and write. The nib is a 14k semi-flex Chilton Pen #2, which lays down a reliable line with a slight toothiness (not scratchy but there is some consistent feedback). Not sure if this nib is entirely correct for the pen. If not, it’s pretty durn close – a plausible factory replacement anyway.

Condition: Barrel and cap are an even, dark black color, but the chasing is well worn (more so on the barrel than on the cap). Imprint is worn as well, with only the tops of the letters in ‘Chilton’ and patent info legible. Trim is mostly free of brassing but for the very top of the clip, clip ball, and a small spot on the cap band opposite the clip (see photo). A flawless collector showpiece it isn't. But if you've been looking for a Chilton, it's solid example that would make for a most enjoyable writer.

2. 1930s WASP “Clipper” (grey Lahn, lever filler, NPT, Firm 12k F/M nib) Manufactured by Sheaffer in the 1930s, WASP (W.A. Sheaffer) pens exhibit much of the high quality of Sheaffer’s mainline models, but with stunning celluloid patterns and colors that never appeared on their other pens. This latticework design, featuring webbed grey celluloid wefted in layers over a golden warp, has a striking depth and chatoyance in person. The glinting colors and underlying patterns one discovers when rotating the pen under light are truly a sight to behold! This pen measures 5 1/8” capped. Its deep, fully legible imprint on the side of the barrel reads “The Clipper / WASP Pen Co. Inc. / Fort Madison. Iowa. U.S.A. . .” I’m relisting this pen after replacing the Sheaffer #33 nib, which was previously installed, with a proper 12k WASP #3. It lays down smooth and consistent F to M line.

Condition: As with most nickel trim of the period, these are hard to find clean, being particularly prone to brassing and corrosion. The trim on this WASP is better than the vast majority of its counterparts, with no brassing but for the sides of the clip ball and a negligible (2mm) spot on each side of the cap band. Color of the celluloid is even and bright, and the surface has no scratches (just minor microscratching). No other notable flaws. A beautiful, collector-grade example of this model.
