Alright, now that we are all coming out of the woodwork and start to get some traffic going, let's do something fun.

Since I've discovered that cigar box can be converted into pen box or case or display, it has been a secret mini-fascination of mine.

This is my latest cigar box pen case:

I love this box and coincidentally, the initial of the company is RP just like Redeem Pens :D

Show me yours and tell us something about it.

Where to get the black liner?

Where to get the black liner?

I purchased those from Michelle of Pendora, whom I don't believe is in business anymore. At one point she was clearing out her pen supplies and inventory - I'll see if I can find contact and check if anything is left.

Jon, I'd be interested in black or other colors also if you managed to contact them. My supply of the beige one is almost gone.

Pardon me while I wipe the drool from my keyboard.... beautiful fountain pens in even "beautifuler" repurposed cigar pen boxes. I only have one box, a 6-pen box I bought online from BamaPen's Pen Boxes about five or six years ago. Simple but classy. Seeing what you've posted makes me want another - I certainly have enough pens! Might even try my hand at buying an empty box and customizing it myself.

I don't smoke cigars (shades of GI Jane going through my head at the thought), but like the idea and found a good selection of boxes on Etsy. Now to source a liner!

I do not smoke cigar either. But my local wine store has a small but well-stocked humidor inside and they sell all the boxes they want to get rid of for $1.50 each :)

I bet if I venture into a real smoke-shop, I'd get a larger variety and probably lower cost per box as well. I just haven't get around to doing that.

Nor do I (smoke). There is a local cigar place that sells all their empties for $1 a piece, with the money going to a local Veteran's organization. Win-win. Still working on the black liners, but if you just want to have something in there, Gary Lehrer still makes them available at gopens.com.

The way I make a cigar box pen case is to just take the cigars out of it and pour in the pens. If I put liners in, I wouldn't be able to find what I wanted, sorting through all the boxes.

Slightly unrelated, but... with my supply of boxes on hand, I decided to make a holder for something new I want to get into: artistic forays. This contains some basic sketching and watercolor bits, and I added an image to the box interior (as well as duding up a Curnow notepad):

I think I've seen your website once long time ago. Glad you decided to join us here.

And now you're tempting me with the tall vertical pen boxes, I have never seen one of those.

Do you also work on existing boxes? Let's say I found a cool one, can I send it to you to put a liner in?

That is what the home-school kids say when they go to their first dance.

Actually, though, the pens are fine in there as long as you don't shake the box.

The tall boxes are really fun to do, and you get a lot of pens, stored nib up, in a small footprint. And, yes, I have on occasion fixed up a box that someone provided. In fact I just finished such a thing this afternoon. If you are interested, let me know what you have first. You can contact me at BamaPen@jehubbard.com

I did manage to find my source and ascertain she is still doing business. Michell St. Claire, dba Pendora Pens, has stopped all her other pen stuff but still provides the liners, which you can see and order right here. (https://www.pendorapens.com/)

I see a few burgundy ones in the near future. I like red, but unless you play with the RAW image and do a lot of post-processing, red and digital photography are not best buddies.

My first attempt at cigar box pen holder!

I picked up the box on Ebay and 2 other boxes in poor condition for the wood. I am not a woodworker, metal is my game so this was fun. I am going to make another one as I have learned a few things doing this little project.

NEW>>> I am putting many coats of tung oil on and gently sanding with fine crocus cloth.. LOOKING BETTER.. Now I have 3 more cool vertical boxes I am tung oiling and making sections for. I bought 1/16 thick cedar and cherry to make dividers with. Making bronze and brass "pens and ink" as surface decoration. Will post when they are done.. This is fun!

I started working on this box last year after finding this thread. I made a two layered box. The top tray is for my pens and their cases, which are in rotation (the tray is made of oak lined with leather). The bottom is a custom pen tray made of leather lined oak pen slots.

The liner on the right came with the white box on the left. By getting trays from gopens.com I increased the capacity on that box to 13. The middle one holds 12. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180509/1d95f83520600e25ff4dc985cd6aea26.jpg

Let me get this straight. So you found a cigar box that is deep enough to make a two-tray pen and case storage?

That is very cool! :D

And I finally have an honest-to-goodness real pen case designed for transporting pens.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/939/41591570521_2e9579ed29_c.jpg

Got this with a box of pens that I need to sell, but I love the design of this pen case. See, the padded section at the top of each row would end up holding the opposite row's pens in place when the case is closed. Very clever design.

I'm definitely not going to do that in order to get a cigar box to make into a pen case. :)

One would be really nice though. Maybe I could get rid of the cigars somehow?

I'm should think that this applies in UK also, but here in the US, you could pretty much just walk into a cigar store and ask for boxes that they are going to get rid of anyway.
Some of them would sell you for $1.50 - 3.00, and some of them are quite fancy and well-made.

Loads of empty boxes here Chrissy, from £4 to £40.

I've asked in one of the few tobacco-oriented stores left in the city (maybe even in New Zealand) and they didn't have boxes anywhere near as handsome as the ones shown here. The ones they did have were plastered with Govt. health stickers which are a pain to get off without damaging the box.

On the other hand, a friend of ours who thought well enough of us to mark our recent wedding gave us a gift that came in this box.

In the last image the pen in the box is a Pilot Custom 823, shown for scale. Now that I've done that I am wondering if i could use this box to store my oblique dip pens - my collection of these of these is larger than my FP collection. Musing.

Never got around to doing anything but put pens in or now pen cases in the ceder lined Burl veneer one. The big humidor is Walnut. (Both were flea market finds) I'd planned to go three layers deep on the walnut one, but never got around to ordering the felted rills.

If that works, now you just have to worry about the 999.

I used ( rolls eyes at naïveté). Zincalume 'Mini orb' metal sheet, and covered it with adhesive felt, then drilled the relevant holes and threaded hat elastic through for loops !
