Is the show in August? If so I was thinking of coming. A lot depends on holiday schedules and flights versus driving down from Toronto area.

I may drive down from Toronto area. The 10 hours of driving with 2 kids for some shopping in DC, a hotel stay, swims...and a quick walk through the show. A balancing act. I would love to meet up to say given past forum chats and Esties discussions but doubt with 2 children under 15 I would be the most exciting person to meet up with.

Yes, FPK, wherefore art though? Met Manoeuver and crashed his lunch, and his friend Greg who I have run into a couple of times more. Met the Anderson's, talked with Andreas Lambrou about how much I love the Jupiter I bought from him. Met Sarj (is that how you spell it?)Saw the new planet pens - holy cow. I had a great time today. Found most of what I was looking for, and had nib grinds for two of my pens by the wonderful nibmeister Michael Masuyama. He took the BB nib on my Visconti Rebecca Moss and stubbed it to a smooth wet dream writer. I mean like WOW!

I was able to attend the pen show for the better part of the day on Friday and for an hour or so on Saturday morning. It was great to see so many friendly faces! Michael Masuyama worked on some of my pesky pens, I picked up two new pens and some paper and some inks (see here (http://fpgeeks.com/forum/showthread.php/3646-2013-DC-Pen-Show-Loot!?p=42114#post42114)), and I got to see many rare vintage wonders. I missed John Mottishaw this year, but my pocketbook is happy (I wouldn't have been able to resist another Nakaya). It was a great trip!

Tough morning at the show. Exhibitor in the main area had a heart attack around 10:45. Someone said his name was Alan Gross but I have no independent verification. A couple Docs attending the show revived him using the hotel defibrillator until the medics arrived on scene.

Hi,

No defibrillator indication, fortunately.

That was scary. I hope he's doing alright now. My thoughts are with him and his family.

It was great to meet you, Manny and Tracy and seeing your fabulous pens and penmanship! Wish it hadn't been so hectic during the show the next day so we could hang out more!

It looks like you all had a blast! I think I learned my lesson this year: DON'T go to the preshow (as simply a pen enthusiast...many people thought I had a parent who was a vendor in the show and were quite confused when I told them that I simply was going for fun.)!!! I really regret not being able to go the next day because as many have said, the people make the shows. While the pens were impressive, there were a lot of vendors who I didn't get to see because they didn't set up until Saturday(or something like that)There is always Philadelphia and next year though!

Personally, for a collector, the best stuff is on Thursday and Friday. If you are hunting the rare or unusual, then those are the days. Bargain hunters, go on Sunday, late. Sorry I missed you FPK, I would have liked to meet you, maybe I did, I was set up all 4 days, so if you walked the whole show, you had to see me.

I have a thread on FPB if anyone is interested, 2 parts posted of 4 so far.... I think it is a good read, the last two days are coming later today, and tomorrow. It is getting exciting.

I agree with you about deals for sure...the Fountain Pen Hospital blowout was quite something! (I almost considered a $50 bag of about 5 complete vac fil Balances but then I thought about restoring them :() I didn't go to every table in the show because of time, so I think I missed you. I saw so many people like Gary Lehrer, David I., and Sarj Minhas who I would've loved to have talked to but my mom and sister were "dying of hunger" and so I wasn't able to. Where were all the vintage European pens on Friday? I only saw ONE vintage Aurora 88, and I did walk through most of the tables. Soennecken was another brand I hoped to see, but didn't. Maybe I just missed alot, or was blind.

You don't find a huge quantity of vintage European pens at US shows. Your best bet is to check out specific dealers who are known to deal in those pens. Vintage Italians are hard to find period. When I go to LA, I might find maybe 20 vintage Italians out of the many thousands in most years. Many are overpriced because of the scarcity in the US. Soennecken are even worse. FYI-vintage Japanese pens are equally scarce at US shows.

Thanks! I didn't know that was the case at such large shows like D.C.

I totally agree. I was in the DC show from Fri to Sun, and only spot one exhibitor selling vintage Italians. Here are what I got: an Ancora 87, and an Omas Extra 556F (the bigger 557F in the picture as a comparison). :)

There were a few vendors from Europe, but I think theirs were mostly MBs, Pelikans, Conways, Onotos, etc. You really have to look closely to find others. In my experience vendors may have a handful of "NoName" vintage European pens.

I am still riding the post-Pen Show high and having more than a little trouble reintegrating into my real world. What fun it was to see the pens and spend time with the pen community. I was really happy to have met some of you at the Saturday night Show and Tell. Penultress - that Nakaya is haunting me! I am going to have to pull the trigger on the stone Portable that I've had my eye on! Tracy, thanks for the advice on the Visconti Blue Typhoon - it's coming my way from Bryant ( he didn't have a stub at the show).

I am having the same trouble reintegrating into my chaotic life, I had such a good time! And I am so glad you have a Typhoon on the way. Really fun pen to use. The Nakaya is haunting me too, big time. O_o Amazing.

I've scaled back on my acquiring more pens, but there was a blue Esterbrook with a master nib that was just too nice to pass up. Also brought some new people with me who were curious as to what a pen show even was.

It was great meeting you too, Steph! And fountainpenkid, don't feel bad about missing pens. For what it's worth, I was determined to see all the tables over a longer period of 1.5 days and still managed to miss a lot of them, including Rick's table.

I LOVE the stone finish Nakayas! We'll have to compare at the next show!

Thanks Altec. But your Extra Lucens is more beautiful than my Extras. :thumb: I am still looking for a pen like yours. :)

Unfortunately Gary but did not bring many Italians, however he showed me a couple of Omas 555 in silver marble, both are beauties.

FYI-vintage Japanese pens are equally scarce at US shows.

I was at the show and had my whole collection of Japanese metal pens (most NOS with stickers, some matching Pencils and BP also), Pilot and Platinums, mainly from the 60's and 70's, so not too old......but barely got a sniff, and didn't sell any of them!! Had a rare Black Striped first generation capless, an uncommon Custom White Stripe and a Black Striped MYU among the bunch. I don't think anyone even picked them up! Kinda weird...

The 60's and 70's stuff don't get much attention at US except for specific pieces (think white stripe MYU, Buddhist Scripture pens etc.). When I talk about vintage, I mean early 1950's or earlier. Definitely wartime and pre-war pens. Those are the pens I collect and they are even hard to find in Japan.

Rick. I did. I picked up the black striped one and you showed me the white striped one. I liked them, but I must say, currently my pockets are full of lint. So I socialized at the Pen Show. It was nice talking with you (I was the short lady with the curly hair, not Deborah Bazel, the other one).

I happened to be at right place at right time, and I do have some experience with this sort.

He is doing well now, which is the key thing.
