While not as phenomenally well behaved as R&K Salix, it's still a great ink with an interesting color. Definitely worth a try for those wanting to get into iron gall inks. :)

I'm enjoying your ink reviews -- thorough & succinct. I also greatly appreciate the comparisons with other inks. I'm curious about how this color compares to J. Herbin Poussiere de Lune and/or Diamine Damson.

A great review of a great ink (along with Salix of course!) and one of my favourites. Diamine's Amazing Amethyst reminds me of it but that one retains its initial colour whereas the Scabiosa does its own wonderful 'thing'!

Great review! This is one of the very few iron galls that I still do not have. I will have to change that...

Hi Jor412

I donīt have Poussiere de Lune and Damson, but I can show you a comparison with 3 others of my inks which are very very close to Scabiosa.

Iīve used a glass dip pen creating the color samples to avoid the influence of the pen.
They are close enough to be siblings.

Someone might have a hard time to distinguish between them when seeing only a color sample on a page without further information ;)

I'm with Pterodactylus, the writing from your 52 looks very light MHPhoto. I get much darker results

Scabiosa looks similar to Poussiere de Lune to me if slightly diluted in a wide nib and like Pterodactylus' sample when in an EF Lamy nib.

I rather liked the old formula of Poussiere de Lune and was looking for a replacement. So thanks for posting this. :) Based on your scan, and my screen, it seems PDL is a color between Scabiosa and the Akkerman ink.

On my screen, Scabiosa definitely looks similar to PDL. Damson is grapier, so not a true replacement. I enjoy Damson but the old PDL was more subtle.

Scabiosa can also be mixed with Salix, and a 1:1 mixture yields an ink that goes down as a royal blue (more purple than Salix alone) and on most papers fades to well-shaded permanent grey within a day or two...
