I have had a handful of pencil cups over the years: glass ones, leather ones, terra cotta, etc. Now that I am in the market for a new one, what material to choose? A distressed tin pail seems too rough and scratchy for the more delicate items. What materials do you find useful?

To be honest, I simply use things I have around the house that seem right for it, and I only have... four that I can see right now. However, the latest one was a souvenir that I purchased sort-of thinking it would end up this way:

I have a hammered copper/tin cup that I purchased on my trip to Guadalajara, Mexico. A copper Mule cup has been in my sights for use.

Mostly old coffee mugs forced into retirement by cracks, chips and leaky hairlines; a couple of purpose-made pen cups, one wooden, one alumin(i)um; a sturdy cardboard cylinder that was once packaging for eau de cologne.

Use a wooden one. It is less ofensive for your most fragile items.

My spouse uses a vintage turned wooden cup. I use a polyester pen pouch.

I worry that putting fountain pens in them will ruin the pens.

I use a whiskey glass I picked up in the Army after the Battle of Johnny's Bar. It seemed to be the only intact piece of glassware in the house; a fitting souvenir, no? It is a tapered glass and keeps the writing utensils flared out at the top and handy to reach.

Same here. I mostly keep my precious metal FPs in pouches or the original boxes.

If you don't want to put a large number of pens in it, you could also use a dice shaker cup: they are covered with felt, inside.

Totally agree. I thought we were talking about pencil storage. :)
I wouldn't put pens I worry about scratching in cups.

Mind you, there are worse ways to store pens ...

(Was going to post this in the pen humo(u)r thread but it seemed to fit here.)

Hi,

I use a pewter cup. I put a round piece of foam on the bottom, so I don't have to be overly careful when dropping, er, placing, pens in it. I've been meaning to attach a strip of self-adhesive velcro (the fluffy side) inside the top edge to avoid direct contact of the pens with the cup.

Christof, you put my pencil cups to shame. These three are leather (back), pewter (left) and ceramic. And yes, my favorite pencil is a Ticonderoga No. 2.

Hi Fred,

I'd love to see a panoramic of your desk. Nevermind the cups - you have a compass, which means that there must be a myriad of fascinating knickknacks lying around.

That's the top of a bookcase, and yes, there's more pen junk on top (another iPhone snapshot, below). My desk appears in the desk thread...now where is that? Oh, here it is: https://fpgeeks.com/forum/showthread.php/4054-Desk-Writing-Area-Photos?

Your pen rack which can be seen there is not bad either.
C.

PS: the part of your home which is also visible on this picture looks interesting as well, at least from an architectonical point of view...

My pen pot is something I made from an existing card container, and covered myself with some paper I had lying around. As a pen pot it works fine, even though it's not a thing of beauty. :)
