1. 1903-10s Waterman #12 Slip-Cap Eyedropper with Box & Instructions (BHR, eyedropper filler, gold-filled barrel band, 14k Flexible/Super-flexible EF nib). This pen came clipless from the factory at a time when pocket clips were offered at an additional cost. Like other eyedropper fillers, the section unscrews so that the barrel can be filled directly with an eyedropper or syringe. Holds a lot more ink than a sac in a typical lever-filler. Smooth black hard rubber with a thick, gold-filled barrel band elegantly engraved with the initials and signature of W.M. Bellamy. It measures 5 1/8” capped and includes the factory box and instructions leaflet with Waterman price listings (see detail photos). The pen is outfitted with an early spoon feed and Ideal nib marked ‘N.Y. No.2’ (as opposed to “REG. U.S. 2’), which possibly dates it to the first decade of the 20th century(?). The nib lays down a smooth and consistent EF line, which flexes to a BBB+ under moderate pressure (see writing sample). It’s capable of super-flexible variation, but the pressure required places it somewhere between flex and superflex. The early spoon feeds were somewhat primitive, so some care must be taken when fully flexing the nib to avoid a gushy line that can feather on some papers.
Condition: This pen appears to have seen relatively little use, as though it spent most of its life stored away in the box. Most of these have discolored to some shade of brown. But the hard rubber on this one retains its factory black hue, with only a couple spots of minor oxidation over a couple parts of the imprint. The imprint is very light but legible when the light strikes it right (actually better than in the detail photo). ‘12’ imprint on the butt of the barrel. Only notable flaws are some scratches to the section (see nib and feed photos) and sliver of wear to the bottom chamfered edge of the barrel band observable under a loupe. Outer box is missing one narrow flap, but pen fits securely in inner box.

Price $220 SOLD

2. Waterman 52
SOLD (before listing)

3. 1920s Conklin #26 (BCHR, lever filler, GF trim, 14k Super-flexible EF nib). Full-sized black hard rubber lever fillers from Conklin seem harder to come by today than their Crescent filler counterparts. This is a larger pen – comparable to a Waterman 55 – measuring 5 3/8” capped. Black chased hard rubber with patented rocker clip and wide, gold-filled band that was available from Conklin at an added cost (no engraved signature present). The nib is a 14k super-flexible Conklin Toledo #2, which lays down a smooth and consistent EF line and flexes to a BBB+ under light pressure (see writing sample). Excellent snap-back and needlepoint hairlines would make it perfect for Copperplate and Spencerian styles.
Condition: Unfaded barrel retains its deep, factory black color. Very strong chasing. No brassing to any of the trim but for a tiny spot on the bottom side of the clip. Deep, fully legible imprint. A collector grade example of this pen.

Price: $220 SOLD

4. 1909-10 Conklin Crescent 2NL in Factory Box (BCHR, Crescent filler, GF crescent, 14k F/EF Wet Noodle nib). The Conklin Crescent was the same pen endorsed by Mark Twain, who prominently featured in some of the adverts of the period. It operates by the same principle as a lever filler: simply turn the lock-ring to release the crescent, which is attached to the pressure bar, and depress it all the way down for a satisfyingly deep fill. Conklin manufactured the Crescent-Filler into the 1920s. Based on the imprint, however, this is an earlier one, dating from 1909-10. Like the #12 above, it came clipless from the factory and includes the original box. Measures 5 1/2” capped. The nib is a 14k Toledo #2 with the crescent design carried over to the breather hole. I use this term reservedly, but I wouldn’t hesitate to call this one a wet noodle. It's marked as an EF in the writing sample, but after further comparison and testing, I'd say it lays down a wet, consistent F/EF line. And it flexes to a BBB+ under very light pressure. Excellent snap-back for expressive styles of writing. Best performs on fine-grain paper given its fineness and slight toothiness.
Condition: This is among the best-kept Crescent fillers I’ve ever personally handled. I see no discernible wear to the chasing and no fading to the hard rubber, which retains its factory black hue. The center imprint is unbelievably crisp, as if it were stamped yesterday. The barrel-end imprint is only slightly worn by comparison, but still fully legible. There is no brassing to the gold-filled crescent. The only notable flaw are some scratches to the section (see nib and feed photos). Box is pretty rough, however, with edges beginning to come apart and flaps missing from one narrow end. Crescent-Fillers in this shape don’t come around too often.

Price: $240 SOLD

5. 1915-25 Parker Jack-Knife Safety button filler (BCHR, button filler, GP trim, 14k Super-Flexible EF nib). Parker’s patented “Jack Knife Safety” caps were designed to prevent ink from leaking into the cap. They’re found on Lucky Curve pens (Parker’s name for its patented J-shaped, “X-mas tree” feed) that predate the famous Duofold of the 1920s. This pen is a button-filler, with blindcap that unscrews a brass button that is depressed to fill the sac by means of a pressure bar to which it is attached. The pen is the No. 20 size, measuring 5 1/4” capped. It comes outfitted with a 14k super-flexible Parker Lucky Curve #2 nib, which lays down a smooth and consistent line that flexes to a BBB+ under light pressure (see writing sample).
Condition: Excellent on the whole, with only slight fading to the black hard rubber and chasing/imprint wear. Imprint is fully legible, but parts of it require a strong light to make out. Brassing to the clip ball and sides on the top of the clip. Overall, a solid example and another delightful writer.
