One of my favourites is Chiang Kai Shek (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiang_Kai-shek)

Ruthless, principled, and as a political strategist very deft; still capable of mistakes but one history should judge fairly favourably, I think.

However, the new custodians of power now want to delete him and his 'authoritarian' history...

Aristotle - Enduring happiness derives from discovering who you are, developing your unique talents, and putting those talents to work for the overall benefit of others as well as yourself.

Leonardo da Vince would be the person historically I think of. His artistic talents, his foresight, his observations and mental connections are what I tune into.

It's an old post now, but I have been thinking about it the last few days. I find it difficult to select a single individual, but lately I have been thinking about Aristotelian understanding of the world, and I relate to it. I sort of pick out red herrings here and there, rather randomly, Schelling, Hegel, Jung... I wish I had an idea about the 19. century gestalt psycology, but my main interest has been Jung. It's the idea of spirit, something in hour mind or being that reaches out further than the individual.

Contrary to some so-called 'opinions', Mao wasn't all bad; he was certainly a great strategist.

I don't know too much about Mao, just the general history book stuff. There's always leaders and strong individuals, but we are all subject to ideas, thoughts, historical develpments. Sane or seemingly insane at times, we all react to something. Among the major currents at present time I can't see much in the way of communism, we are reacting to something, and I guess it shows in the current political leaderships. Which way does money flow?

That's true; nobody's ALL bad. Jack the Ripper was kind to cockroaches, for example, and used to feed them bits of flesh from his victims. I think. Or was that budgies? And Adolph Hitler had great taste in chocolates.

Survivors of the Cultural Revolution don't remember Mao with much affection.

And today the Chinese government dismisses the Tiananmen Square massacre as an urban legend.
Anyway, I'm horrified every time I think about how the West, and the US in particular, threw Chiang Kai Sek under the bus, and for no advantage. Insane.

I'm not sure how well I'd "relate to" him, since that sort of thing is really a two-way street, and he might find me an insufferable twit, but he is one of the figures from history I admire the most.

Samuel Clemens / Mark Twain. A kindred curmudgeon with a knack of identifying the idiocy surrounding him.

Jesus Christ.

Oh dang. I'm answering the question, "Which historical figure would you like to be for [time-frame]?," "historical's" being loosely interpreted.

I would love the chance to confront people who speak for Jesus and just be all "WRONG!" in their faces. I mean, if I really were Jesus for a day. But probably that wouldn't be enough time to recover from all the throwing up I'd do from learning what people do in my name. (Nods to Hannah and Her Sisters.)

Which does presuppose that I know what Jesus's reaction would be. What if Jesus approved?! "Poor people, where are your boot straps?! What have you done with your boot straps?! Idiots! Sick people, why didn't you save money for the care you must have known was inevitable?! Too bad! No! Don't touch me!" Jesus screams and runs away.

Either way, it'd be interesting.

Probably.

I would have liked to have met Thich Nhat Hanh, say about 20 years ago. While there are many people who say amazing things and do amazing things, there are less who are simply and fully there.

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk - founder of the Turkish Republic. I admire his ideas, actions and courage to change a nation's destiny so radically.
