The Revival!

Mystery Ink's are fun. I'm going to do another one. I need 6-8 volunteers to receive a random sample of ink, evaluate it, review it, and post your thoughts and guesses as to what it might be. Post here if you want to join in the fun. If I get a lot volunteers we'll draw names out of a hat to pick winners. International crowd is welcome to participate. I think I shipped to Canada, Australia, and Japan for MI #13. Don't fret if you want to participate and miss out. I'm planning Mystery Ink #15 too!

For his generosity in providing me with some sample vials to facilitate this round of Mystery Ink FredRydr is automatically on the list.

For those unfamiliar with the Mystery Ink threads and why we're at #14, here are past inks and threads.

Not a problem. International shipping doesn't bother / scare me.

Can I mail it to the new house? I know it's not done yet, but I feel like the first package delivered needs to be pen-related :). See if they'll put up a temporary mailbox!

Well, no one else seems interested. I guess we'll run MI #14 with the current 5 volunteers (well...4 + 1 auto entrant). I will be sending each of you a private message to request a shipping address. Then I'll try to ship these out in intervals so everyone gets them within a couple days of each other.

So thanks to Scooby's and Fred's generosity (thank you both. :thank_you2:) I received my sample in the mail, filled a Pelikan Go! piston filler pen, and wrote with it. I really like this ink. :)

Oh and it's a saturated ink! For some reason I never mentioned this.

Thank you Chrissy. I was just about to update the thread. You let me know your sample has arrived. Tracking shows the other two international packages being in-country and transferring from the major international airport from which they had arrived. Sammyo, sems, keep your eyes open :). FredRydr and Sailor Kenshin's samples were dropped at the post office this afternoon. They aren't too far from me, so I expect they are delivered within the next 2-3 days. I have also convinced my wife to review the ink as it's something she's scratched a few words with in one of my pens, but never actually inked up and used to any extent.

Sorry to confuse and disappoint. The "Thanks" was for posting the pic / writing sample and not for the ink guess. It is not PRDCSSB, though I do own that ink. I will wait for the remainder of participants to write and post their impressions before revealing the ink's true identity.

A comment I was going to make yesterday...

This ink appears much brighter and less saturated in Chrissy's writing samples than what I usually get from this ink. My writing is closer to what Fred has posted. I don't know if it's lighting or volume of ink on the page. I do tend to write with a heavier had so I get more ink flow. Not sure about Fred. I do also tend to use this ink in a cursive italic nib so it's putting down more ink than any of my round nibs. I guess this means I'm inking up a pair of pens when I get home and comparing CI to EF.

My sample was written on white paper, so the first thing I do with a scan is to make the paper white. Then I ensure the ink colour matches what I see on the page. I checked again, and what I see on the page looks exactly like my scan.

However, the pen was rinsed out with water, shaken at least 20 times, then filled and written with immediately. So the ink didn't stay overnight in the pen. In fact it's no longer in that pen, as it was leaking from a tiny crack in the section that I knew was there but I thought was sealed.

None of my blue inks with similar sheen are as dark as MI14. So my answers are more like guesses.

I just did my own writing sample with a stub / CI and an EF (to be posted shortly). Light source is definitely the major contributor in this equation. When I write the broader CI nib puts down more ink and provides a darker result with more sheen. This makes sense. When I look at the CI and EF writing under the same lamp the EF looks lighter (less ink, duh). When I snap photos with my camera phone it all looks the same color and a bit darker than what my eyes perceive.

My writing samples with Mystery Ink #14 using my Waterman Charleston and Lamy 2000 on an Apica notebook.

First photo with default brightness adjustment on the camera phone. Primary light source is a "daylight" color LED desk lamp.
https://fpgeeks.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=38087&d=1518792024

Second photo with camera brightness adjusted such that the paper color appears similar on the phone screen to how my eyes perceive it on the desk. Unfortunately it only brightens around the focus point and not the entire photo.
https://fpgeeks.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=38088&d=1518792032

Third photo, taken with flash turned on. It somehow results in a more "white" photo, but also a darker photo. I could probably use the photo editor to adjust brightness, but that's an additional exercise I'm not motivated to perform.

So here's my thoughts...

It is a lovely blue, with a lot of sheen. The red sheen is very nice, but I'm one of those people that thinks that there is such a thing as too much sheen!
As all inks with heavy sheen, it tends to dry out in the feed and cause some hard starting. This was frustrating while taking notes at work. I didn't have to open the pen to prime the feed, but I did have to get it flowing again... Even after quite short pauses.

It is a very wet ink that flows nicely, but it is too thin for general flex writing without REAL care and filling in some railroaded gaps. It lubricated the nib nicely and really made the nib feel nice and there were no issues with general writing. In fact it flowed well and went down in a rich stream of inky goodness.

Oh yes... And it takes forever to dry. This ink is smudgelicious on nice paper. I wrote on Maruman and Rhodia paper with similar results.

The ink smells like a Sailor ink; reminds me of Diamine Majestic Blue and acts like an Organic Studio ink.

Overall, it is pretty and shiny. If this was more of the base blue and less sheen I think I'd like it more. I plan to put some in my Edison with a 1.1 stub too and see how it goes in that pen... but I think the drying out might be worse. Final thought... it looks and feels fancy, but the excessive sheen; hours of dry time and hard starting would stop me from buying it at this time.3809038091380923809338094

It's an interesting ink. Dark and intense yet looks professional with my writing. Purple tint looks classy and the sheen is beautiful. It's fast drying on clairefontaine paper so I'm surprised. Looking forward to discover what it is.

I'm starting to feel this way about a lot of sheeny inks. I enjoy the effect of sheen, but I don't use all of my pens often enough to stop inks from starting to dry up in the feed. I hadn't used my Nakaya in 3 days and the Sailor / Bungbox Clown Tears was dry. I had to add water to get it working again. Organics Studio Nitrogen and Walden Pond were worse...less than 24 hours for those sheen monsters to dry up. The Sailor / Bungbox Piano Mahogany in my F-C 19 is also hard-starting every few days. Somehow the Diamine Blue Velvet in my Pilot VP is also drying out a bit. It hasn't given me hard start issues, but it gets dry, gets more saturated, and gains a rather strong sheen (looks a lot like the Mystery Ink). I had bought the Blue Velvet while searching for a vivid blue ink which didn't have a lot of sheen. The current performance is somewhat disappointing :(.

None of my blue inks with similar sheen are as dark as MI14. So my answers are more like guesses.

Monteverde Sapphire?
It is not Monteverde Sapphire. It is also not Diamine Blue Velvet or Parker Quink Blue-Black, but here is the Mystery Ink with them for comparison.

I think this ink is N7 :)
You mean Organics Studio Nitrogen?

While the Mystery Ink can have a lot of sheen it is not nearly the Charlie Sheen level of crazy that is O.S. Nitrogen. Conveniently MI #14 is in the same pen I had used for O.S. Nitrogen in that Guess the Ink challenge.

Seemed to start hard after I had loaded and left it on its side for a couple of hours, but it writes with a fairly suave and slinky manner.

Sailor Jentle Blue also has red sheen, but MI 14 probably isn't this; I have JB in a JinFari at the moment, and the Jentle ink looks darker. This is a bright blue that looks denim-y in heavier application.

Is it a RO ink? I'm pretty unfamiliar with the line, apart from some pen pal letters.

Diamine Blue Velvet got on my fingers, too, every time I used it. Clearly, though I loved its properies and color, that ink hated me.

Sorry guys. I did manage to ink a couple pens yesterday, but wanted to let the feeds sit and soak before I did my writing sample.

Without further ado...
Paper: Rhodia doPad No.16
Lighting: Artificial diffused flourescent

The Good
The base color is a pretty decent dark blue. Not quite a blue-black, but definitely darker than a true blue.
Once it flows, it is relatively smooth to write with, though it was more noticeable with the VP since it is basically a needlepoint, which means it's really feedbacky to begin with. It was less so with this ink.

Based on what other people mentioned, I thought it would take forever and half to dry when I wrote with the FC Paradox, which is an excessively wet writer, it dried rather quickly on the Rhodia dotPad it was written on.

I also expected some feathering and spread considering how much ink went down, but that didn't happen.

The Bad
As mentioned by others, it was a pretty bad hard start out of the FC Paradox, but not out of the Pilot VP.
This was not surprising since the FC Paradox has a tendency to hard start to begin with.

What did surprise me was the minor railroading on some of my downstrokes (see the "n" in nib and "i" in ink of the first section). I was not expecting that, especially considering how much ink went down with the other letters.

The Ugly
So the sheen... this is most definitely a sheening ink, and really, that's all it is when it came out of the FC Paradox. It's a struggle to see the base color, which is a shame because I think the base color is much nicer without the sheen. I might experiment with diluting it to see if I can get less sheen.

Final Thoughts
I don't think this will ever be a color I will reach for before any of my other blues.
For the most part, it seems like a one dimensional color with how I write, so that makes it less interesting to me.
As much as I like highly saturated inks, this doesn't hit the spot for me.

That was a fun read, I might volunteer when you do mystery ink 15 if you don't mind a sketch for the review, my handwriting is atrocious!

Therefore if we assume that Akkerman inks are made by Diamine then this could be Majestic Blue???

Well, it was my first akkerman and first mystery ink experience. It was exciting to use such gorgeous ink without knowing anything about it. Thanks Scooby, looking forward to next one!

Absolutely! And fear not about your handwriting. These Mystery Ink threads are about evaluating a random unknown ink in whatever way you choose. The handwriting threads are in a different sub-forum :). In fact, using it to sketch vs. write will likely be a welcome variation in evaluating an ink. So yes, keep an eye out for when MI #15 goes live and throw your name in the hat.

Scooby, what is that tape you use to seal the vials?

The color is lovely. I had a sample of this ink a good while back. Sadly it hard started for me, and I just didn't want to deal with it. It is a gorgeous color though, and very sheeny!

Scooby, what is that tape you use to seal the vials?

I can tell you this. :) We've already had PM's about this tape. :)

It's Scotch 70 self-fusing silicone tape (https://www.amazon.com/Scotch-70-Self-Fusing-Silicone-Electrical/dp/B0029Z5RSY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1519284427&sr=8-1&keywords=scotch+70+silicone+tape)

Sometimes it's available on ebay for a lower price, and it's old stock. I assume it might still work though as there appears to be no use-by date on the packs. :)

Yup. An alternative would be the base 3M rubber tape (not silicone). It's a bit thicker, but it's still self-fusing and leaves behind little to no mess.

I use standard electrical tape to seal my bottles for posting. Always works well, peals off easily, is widely available and is very inexpensive.

Unless you get certain liquids on the electrical tape.
Most automotive fluids will turn the adhesive into a nasty, dark, gooey mess.
Heat above its rating will also turn the adhesive into tar. Hell, if you leave it on something long enough, you get tar.

None of those fates have ever befallen any of the ink bottles I’ve shipped. The tape is only on for a matter of a few days & I stopped shipping automotive fluids with my inks a few months ago. I also no longer put them in my oven to cook before posting :pound:

Because of work, I now handle all electrical tape removals with gloves on!

I’ve not had any problems during the over 10 years I’ve been shipping with such tape, but thanks for the advice.

I loved the way that Scooby's silicone rubber tape rolled off in a complete ring and left no mess. :applause: Thanks Scooby, I'm going to try some. :)
