I'll start with this beauty of an SJ. Really enjoy this pen - writes immediately even if unused for weeks.

Paper is Ampad Gold. Although I don't have any problems per se with the paper, some inks "refuse" to dry on it - i.e. PR Ebony Green.

I posted this photo in another thread, but I'll post it here, too. Here is my bandless copper Dollar Pen with a 2284 broad stub nib (next to a modern Franklin Christoph and a Nakaya):

Some Reliefs, made in England for Esterbrook by Conway Stewart. The line was in production
from the '30s into the '50s. The two Morocco Reds differ in that pen on the right has a red
casein band at the cap end, the one on the left does not.

Both the dollar pen and desk pen look very nice. I'm especially fond of the desk pen.

The paper (?) clip looks a real bruiser!

Thanks for the pics.

The clip is heavy duty, what you can't see in the photo is the ball bearings that act as the hinge between the plates. I imagine the crew that assembled these likely had strong fingers.
Thanks for the comments.

I have used a No. 20 clip as a money clip for probably five years now. Super sturdy, good size for your pocket, and if you have too many cards to fit comfortably within the clip, you have too many cards! :)

Oh, and they made a No. 40 too, huge clip!

That demonstrator is my holy grail. I doubt very seriously that I'll ever own one (never seen another one besides this one) but I've lusted after it ever since I first saw it on your site. I love demonstrators of all kinds, and I've been bitten hard by the Esterbrook bug.

Second in line is a Visumaster. More attainable probably (and no doubt more affordable), but still haven't had luck finding one. Missed one on Ebay just last week.

Best, greg

GardenWeasel

No.... All have clips.

gregamckinney
April 16th, 2014, 08:45 AM
I've found that the clip-less purse pens (model H, versus the clipped CH) are dramatically less common. I've been watching for them for about 10 years, and have found four.
I sold the one that was a duplicate (color) of one I already had. I've seen hundreds of clipped models in that time.

Also in this pic: a fairly scarce Relief 22L with a ring top instead of a clip:

Estie?

http://i751.photobucket.com/albums/xx153/FPWriter/SJMk-1open_zps16660791.jpg

The body is a 1947 pre-production SJ. These are recognized by the lack of the (R) symbol after Esterbrook in the imprint, and screw in jewels.

This pen is something I put together for my daughter's 20th birthday gift. The jewel is an opal, a nice fiery one, which was cut by Trillium in Alabama. The nib is a unit I made from a broken and unrestorable 1943 Eversharp Skyliner.

I caved and bought an Esterbrook SJ ("root beer"? copper coloured) on eBay and just got it in the mail a few days ago. I haven't even properly photograpphed it yet, but I will tomorrow. I LOVE THIS PEN. So much. I now want several more (too bad the budget says "no way!" at the moment). I love them. I now want a grey one, as well as some of the pastel purse pens (sans clip). They're beautiful pens! I'll be sure to post a few pictures shortly!

Three pics of my lovely new (to me, that is) copper SJ. I didn't know what the big deal about "Esties" was, until I got this beautiful thing. I also have a spare nib (2314M), but I kind of prefer the fine nib (I'm not sold on stub nibs). I think I need to get a few more SJs. They are a great size for my small girly hands. I'm absolutely LOVING lever pens.

<snip for brevity>

The 2314 is a special and not so common nib. The stub is intended to shape the lines of a signature, to give an added dimension of complexity, unique personalization to someone's identification. With practice you can make your writing quite beautiful with them. If you really have no use for it, there are many other who do, and you will find that if it is in good condition, it will fetch quite a premium over the standard ball or needle nibs.

Thank you, I didn't know it was a harder to find nib. I wanted a stub nib on the Esterbrook so I had bought it separately... and I do like the way it writes, but I feel like my writing isn't as nice with a stub nib. I need to play around with it a bit more first... I haven't given up on it!
