Condition (n.b.): All pens listed below have been disassembled, cleaned and restored with new sacs installed in the last couple months. Each is guaranteed to fill and write as designed without leaks or other issues. These pens have no cracks, chips, personal engravings, missing parts, bent nibs, misaligned tines, or threading issues.

1. 1920s Waterman 52V (BCHR, NPT, lever filler, 14k XF Super-Flex nib). This is the vest pocket model of the same standard girth as the 52 but shorter, measuring a hair under 4 1/2” capped and 5 3/4” posted. Super-flexible 14k Ideal NY #2 nib lays down a buttery smooth and consistent XF line, flexing to a BBB+ under light pressure. One of the smoothest Waterman nibs I’ve encountered. It even writes smoothly upside down, yielding more of an XXF line. And the generous flex and strong snap back make it a delightfully expressive writer. Condition: excellent. Deep black hue to the hard rubber with little to no fading or wear to the chasing. Exceptionally clean trim aside from some wear to the plating on the lever box. Smooth, lustrous finish to the hard rubber, and deep, fully legible imprints. Price: $180 [ON HOLD]

2. 1928-30 Waterman 52 (BCHR, NPT, lever filler, 14k XF Flex/Super-Flex nib). Measure 5 1/4” capped. Flexible/Super-flexible 14k Ideal #2 nib lays down a smooth and consistent F line and flexes to a BBB+ under moderate pressure. Not quite as soft as some of the others but capable of crisp, needlepoint hairlines with excellent snap back and wet, yet controllable lines under pressure. Condition: excellent. Strong chasing and minor fading to the hard rubber, which makes the barrel appear black in natural light but chocolate brown/black under lamplight. Plating on the clip is clean but there is some wear to that of the lever and lever box. Smooth, lustrous finish and deep, fully legible imprints (even retaining some of the original red paint in the ‘52’ stamp on the end of the barrel!). Price: $175

3. 1920s Waterman 452 Sterling Silver Basketweave Overlay (sterling silver over HR, lever filler, 14k XF/XXF Super-Flexible nib). Measures 5 5/16” capped. And quite a bit heavier in the hand compared to a 52. Known to collectors as “Basketweave” or “Bamboo,” this overlay pattern epitomizes the height of Art Deco design. It is marked ‘sterling’ on both the cap and barrel, while the cap is also marked ‘Waterman’s’ and the barrel ‘Made in U.S.A.’ The pen appears to have outfitted by its original owner with a Waterman’s accommodation clip marked ‘Sterling Depose’ on the side and bearing the Ideal/Globe logo on the front. Super-Flexible Ideal #2 verges on a wet noodle, yet its strong snap-back yields maximal control over the line. It lays down a smooth and consistent XF/XXF line, which widens to a BBB+ under very light pressure. In addition to these writing characteristics, it’s capable of needlepoint hairlines that make this pen a consummate choice for Spencerian and Copperplate styles. I guarantee you’ll be tickled pink by how nicely it writes. Condition: excellent/very good. The overlay is in great shape, with no significant dents or dings. The hard rubber beneath is a deep black hue, though the ends are a little glossier than are the portions between the overlay. Some scratching and tarnish to the clip. The ‘452’ stamp on the end of the barrel is visible with the naked eye when it catches the light, but it’s very faint and didn’t show up in the photo. No other noteworthy flaws. A beautiful piece of history with a killer nib, this pen is sturdy enough to be carried for decades then passed on to the next generation of writers. Price: $290 SOLD

4. 1920s Waterman 0752 (BCHR w/ gold-filled band and clip, lever filler, Super-Flex 14k XF/XXF nib). Measures 5 3/8” capped. Another interesting variation on the standard 52, with 18k gold-filled trim (as marked on the clip and indicated by the ‘0’ in the number code). The Super-Flexible Ideal #2 is another great calligraphic nib nib, laying down a smooth and consistent XF/XXF line, which widens to a BBB+ under very light pressure. The writing characteristics of this nib are virtually identical to that of the 452 above (pen #3): needlepoint hairlines, strong snap-back, and reliable flow – manages to be nicely wet when flexed yet crisp when returning to an unflexed line. Condition: excellent/very good. Moderate wear to chasing and minimal fading. Gold-filled cap band shows no brassing, but clip and lever show some spots here and there. Lightly worn yet fully legible imprints. Everything you could ask for from a vintage Waterman’s flex nib but without the higher pricetag of an overlay. Price: $210 SOLD

5. 1920s Waterman 52 1/2 (BCHR, NPT, lever filler, Super-Flex 14k XF/XXF nib). This is the full-length, slim girth model, measuring 5 5/16” capped. I personally prefer the slender models for calligraphic writing as the slimmer section allows for greater range of motion in between the fingers. This pen is a factory clipless model at a time when clips where offered to the customer as an optional upgrade, which added to the cost of the pen. Likewise, I have several nickel-plated accommodation clips available, which may be fitted to this pen on request for an additional $10-$20. The pen is equipped with a Super-Flexible 14k Ideal NY #2 nib, which lays down a smooth and consistent XF/XXF line that widens to a BBB+ under light pressure. Not quite as soft as pens #3 and #4, but capable of similar line variation with strong snap-back and nice hairlines. Condition: excellent. Very strong chasing and imprints and slight fading (a nice black hue with a hint of chocolate brown under lamplight). Minor high-point wear to the lever. No other noteworthy issues. A basic, utilitarian pen with another extremely expressive nib. Price: $180 SOLD

6. 1920s Waterman 52 (BCHR, NPT, lever filler, 14k XF Flex/Super-Flex nib). Measures 5 3/8” capped. Here’s an odd bird. It appears this pen came clipless from the factory (like pen #5 above) and the original owner decided to take it to a professional to have it retrofitted with a custom nickel-plated clip, attached from the inside of the cap as opposed to riveted. It resembles an early Wahl clip, except that the clip ball is stationary, unlike Wahl’s roller clips. Whoever performed this service did a first rate job. The hole for the clip seems to be machine-drilled without any irregularities around it and the clip itself is till solid and fully-functional with no wiggle whatsoever. All this gives it a factory-like appearance. The pen is outfitted with a Flexible/Super-Flexible 14k Ideal #2 nib, which lays down a smooth and consistent BB+ line under light pressure and BBB+ line under moderate pressure. Condition: depends on whether you’d call the custom clip a flaw; I’d call it excellent on the whole. Color is close to factory black and chasing and imprints are very strong, including the ‘52’ stamp on the end of the barrel, which retains the original red paint. There is, however, some negligible high-point wear on the lever/box and a couple spots of corrosion on the clip. An interesting curiosity and another solid writer. Price: $165 SOLD
