Show off your pencils. Mechanical or wood case. It doesn’t matter.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180528/f57eb8371844cb0f69fd5124ace59319.jpg

So are you usung them yet? If so how are you liking them? I saw where they are making a desk set and the one I saw had three different styles/models in it. Very nice with a nicer price tag of $150.00, which was tempting.

Mechanical pencils I've gathered over the years since they were my primary writing instruments since high school (well, I've lost those I used in high school and college).

Nothing special, really since most can be bought at stationary stores but I love my Pentel Kerry! Been my go-to mechanical pencil for 3 years. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190218/57430c9e16f99d4e88c8535b81865449.jpg

So far this is what I have...
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190218/1cac0b14033aa5d4dfef209e00fe735f.jpg

Top to bottom: Sheaffer Balance, Wearever, Eversharp Skyline, Zebra M-301, and Wahl Ringtop.

I've used the Zebras for years. The other pencils are part of FP sets.

During college (engineering degree) I used budget mechanical pencils almost exclusively including a Pentel Sharp Automatic (or whatever they were called in the early 90s). I wished I could remember the other brands.

Somewhere around here I have a beat up clutch pencil too. Edit: ah yes, Koh-i-noor Technigraph 5611...

Despite being a true red ripple, this pencil doesn't appear to be by Waterman. It's quite large at 12.4cm. It was made in England but carries no manufacturer information. There is a patent number but it's a general one that applies to many different makes of mechanicl pencil.

This is what I can actually afford:

Nevertheless I recently splurged and picked these up at Michaels (a US arts and crafts supplies store). Serviceable, although the graphite was not picked under the full moon by virgins consecrated to the Great Pencil Goddess. The eraser works quite well; not sure if I prefer it to a Pink Pearl; they're both excellent erasers and seem to work equally well. I got it at Jetpens.com.

Somehow I lost my first Kuru Toga. Grr. Anyway I decided to get a replacement and a couple other mechanicals to try from Pentel.

I probably could have done without the other two. I like the Kuru Toga quite a lot. Although the Graph Gear 500 is pretty nice too. The Graphlet is ok but I guess I like the heft of the others.

This is an interesting thread for me. I never realized that there is such a variety of pencils out in the world. I have used mechanical pencils for years, never thought they would be something people collected, I just used them😃 This is my collection gathered from all over the house, wherever there is a chair, there is a pencil and a pad of paper. The only really vintage pencil is the Sheaffer that is matched to a Sentinel fountain pen. It was my dad's set from 1948.

Here are pencils that I use for sketching/drawing. The Cretacolor, Wolf's Carbon (wood-looking), and Faber Castell Polychromos (black, above the Wolf's Carbons) are for dark blacks.

I use pens for writing.

I remember early on in school, we used pens for everything except arithmetic / mathematics. That subject was to be written in pencil. I rejected that idea pretty quickly.

I received this red Parker 21 mark II pencil a month or two ago, as part of a matched set with a P21 pen.

This is a great pencil. It’s about 5” long. There’s an eraser if you remove the silver cap, but of course it does not work after 50+ years. I loaded it up with this excellent Pentel 2B.

That's kind of the sharpening shape that my Dad (an artist) taught me to carve using a hand-held blade. I still hand sharpen all my wood pencils that way.

by the way, I love the lighting on your photos. I have zero skills with a camera, but lately someone told me about aperture priority and it has made a big difference (i.e. from terrible to just about okay!).

I thank you. It's always the two of them: Aperture and shutter speed. If you use a tripod, the shutter speed becomes less important and the aperture can be set small. This results in a greater depth of field. But one thing is the most important of all, it is the light. You can never have enough light when you photograph small objects. That is why I work with a flash. With digital photography everything has become so easy - just the trial and error method until you're satisfied.

btw: what's the story behind the quotations in your signature...?

Thanks for the photography advice. Keeping it simple is the way to go for me, so one factor at a time is great.

Quotations in my signature? These are words that I thought were important to remember because it has been a difficult year for everyone. It's just coincidence that they come from the same source. There is also a word limit on signatures, so they have to be short. :)

First pic is a bit of a rehash from the 'collecting mechanical pencils' topic, but might be more appropriate here.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50570311661_49339602bc_o.jpg

Not entirely sure if this is appropriate either, but pencil extenders:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50657998041_06b0811246_o.jpg

Standard knurled screw-chucks, a 'Perfect Pencil Jr.' to see if I like the thing (it's alright) and my favourite extender. The blue is a bit bright but it's excellent. Acts like an extra chunky lead holder, gloms tightly onto pencil stubs, easy to grip, and has an eraser under the cap. I can't remember the brand name, I just know it's a japanese outfit. Cult Pens used to sell them, now I can barely find it on google, let alone in any UK webshops.

Lately I wanted to buy a new mechanical pencil that satisfied a long list of overly fussy demands:

- 0.9mm lead
- retractable sleeve, or at least pocket friendly
- a decent diameter to hang onto
- no knurled or rubber grip
- cheap, to match my personality
- but not cheap-looking
- not as ugly or stiff as a Mars Micro
- doesn't look like something from 60s-era Star Trek or Dr. Who. (sorry Rotrings)

The Kokuyo Enpitsu Sharp was the only thing I found that fit the bill. A couple of UK sellers stock the Type S but I went for a Type Mx from a japanese seller on ebay. The biggest hitch was having to want for weeks for it to arrive. And it just did.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50658083792_b7e57ee13f_o.jpg

And it's great. Satisfies my wants; has an extendable eraser; and the sloping hexagonal metal grip makes it front-heavy in a way that feels good. I'm not sure why it has a semi-transparent window mid-barrel because there's nothing to see there. Anyway. I bought it to stick Pentel 2B leads in, but the leads that come with it (HB I assume, no clue from the packaging) are nice and smooth, even with a sharp-edged new lead, and fairly dark.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50658084177_2de10c5f40_o.jpg

The thing is, while I was waiting a month+, and partly thanks to FPGeeks, I was introduced to the joys of vintage pencils that also tick the right boxes.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50657996101_9af6edc9e9_o.jpg

Tentative steps at first. It'll be a while before I move up to anything like the excellent Pelikans shown here, but this 51 and Moderne look great in my eyes, and turned out to be very satisfying to use.

Some vintage Pelikan MPs, Caran D'Ache fixpencils (especially loving the two number 3 ones for 3mm lead), AW Faber Castell 9603 Tekagraph, two first gen rOtring 600 MPs (0.5 & 0.9 mm) and finally, a rOtring Tikky refillable eraser from the 90s.

Good to see you here Mana, great collection! I like these Fixpencils a lot:
