Nobody here but us ghosts:

THE LISTENERS

by: Walter de la Mare (b. 1873)

'S there anybody there?' said the Traveller,
Knocking on the moonlit door;
And his horse in the silence champ'd the grasses
Of the forest's ferny floor:
And a bird flew up out of the turret,
Above the Traveller's head:
And he smote upon the door again a second time;
'Is there anybody there?' he said.
But no one descended to the Traveller;
No head from the leaf-fringed sill
Lean'd over and look'd into his grey eyes,
Where he stood perplex'd and still.
But only a host of phantom listeners
That dwelt in the lone house then
Stood listening in the quiet of the moonlight
To that voice from the world of men:
Stood thronging the faint moonbeams on the dark stair,
That goes down to the empty hall,
Hearkening in an air stirr'd and shaken
By the lonely Traveller's call.
And he felt in his heart their strangeness,
Their stillness answering his cry,
While his horse moved, cropping the dark turf,
'Neath the starr'd and leafy sky;
For he suddenly smote on the door, even
Louder, and lifted his head:--
'Tell them I came, and no one answer'd,
That I kept my word,' he said.
Never the least stir made the listeners,
Though every word he spake
Fell echoing through the shadowiness of the still house
From the one man left awake:
Ay, they heard his foot upon the stirrup,
And the sound of iron on stone,
And how the silence surged softly backward,
When the plunging hoofs were gone.

It is does not bother me that there are not as many people at FPG. I enjoy conversation with a few interesting people than a room full. I have already noticed some of the people from the Land of the Rising Sun Sub Forum joining FPG.

Naw, that's how TWSBI does it. It happened to me with the 540 and I had to order the 1.1 stub separately. But it was worth it -- great stub.

Thanks and I'm glad to be here.

More seriously -- it was only a couple weeks ago that I rekindled an old obsession with pens. fpgeeks was the first forum I started reading, and was the first site I joined.

When FPN came back up, I got an account there too, but of the two boards this one has been more useful; There seems to be greater interest here in lower-end and practical pens, and the long thread about Chinese pens (http://fpgeeks.com/forum/showthread.php/541-So-What-s-the-Story-on-Chinese-Pens) was better than anything I could readily find on FPN, and it came at a time when I was trying to decide what to get for my first FP in years.*

I figure I'll continue keeping an eye on both sites and there's no reason not to, but currently I enjoy this site more.

*(A Nemosine EF which has turned out to be a good writer on all kinds of paper, even the junkiest office notepad. Didn't see KrazyIvan's review of the Nemosine (http://fpgeeks.com/forum/showthread.php/785-Nemosine-Sungularity-Hand-Written-Review) until after buying them, weirdly enough, though I can more or less second his opinions. Unfortunately, the Nemosine F my wife got at the same time hasn't been as good, and we might exchange it if it doesn't improve with other inks.)

This to me has always been my impression of the FPGeeks Forum and website. I much prefer to be here then on FPN anytime. For me, this place feels like home where as FPN feels like visiting my parents... nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there! :)

There's a lot of useful information on the FPN site, so I'll still go there from time to time, if it's info I'm after.
But this site is much nicer to just hang out on, generally.
But I do hope we can avoid too many (yes, I know that is subjective) junk threads with a lot of dross in them, just for the sake of someone's thread count.

A year ago I chose this forum over the big one just because I could wrap my mind around the amount of activity here. Since then I've also met the proprietors in person (and several of the community members too) and can vouch for their awesomeness.

For those refugees who choose to continue to hang out here: welcome welcome welcome.

I am glad the other place is back up.

Well, if Annie meant "nous", presumably that's what she would have written.

I'm still unclear what the student newspaper of the University of York has to do with this discussion, but I'm probably missing some inside joke. I'm new here, and English isn't my first language anyway. Would someone please explain?

Seffrican,
I just went with what seemed closest to what it could be, looked at the same link you did, and figured, close enough?

English is a mess of a language, BTW, and I was taught once that many non-native speakers can understand each other in English better than any of them can understand someone from the US, because that version of the language is so full of colloquial speech and expressions, and is in some ways, "less correct."

I am always fascinated by the earlier versions of our wacky spellings. For example, mean probably used to be (and still is in some places I think) pronounced me-an, just after it lost its middle d (median), or how regal, royal, and real are all pretty close. And if you want to enjoy someone butchering the language to glorious effect, read the comic poet Ogden Nash!

Well, with apologies for going all wiki on you, here is a link on nous:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nous

Best off-topic wishes!

I learned a new word today. :bounce::bounce::bounce:

It is quieter than it was when I joined a few weeks ago. I don't really count myself a refugee - more a migrant, and I will probably still go back to FPN for the classifieds and a few other things, without apology. This forum is pretty comfortable for someone who chose a small undergraduate university in order to avoid 200-person classes...

I get that. Words like e'er and ne'er and yon and twain . . .

I always feel the dark melancholy of the poem, but not sure it translated to my kids when I read it to them. All it needs are illustrations by James Thurber, like the ones he did for Longfellow's Excelsior, to make it totally comical.

Sometimes a lot can be said in few words. This may be one of the smaller forums, but reading a few very informative recent threads has probably saved me from future scam-rage. I'm almost inclined to petition that the Lounge section be rechristened "The Straight Dope".
