c. 1918 Conklin Crescent-Filler #50 (BCHR, crescent filler, GPT, 14k F/M Superflex nib). Comparable in proportions if slightly longer than a Waterman’s 56, this oversized model measures 5 11/16” capped. Again like the 56, it’s smaller than Conklin’s largest Crescent-Filler (75/S8 cf. Waterman’s 58), but it dwarfs the standard 20/2NL model (see photo comparing it to a 2NL, cf. Waterman’s 52). I received this pen in its original box, on which someone has penciled ‘1918’: a plausible date of manufacture for this pen, whose barrel and clip imprints suggest 1918-20 production. This pen is in immaculate condition; I didn’t even have to polish anything but the trim – just re-sacced it. Factory black color with no discernible oxidation and factory deep chasing and imprints. Just look at the crispness of it! No cracks, chips, personal engravings, missing parts, bent/misaligned tines, or threading issues. No brassing whatsoever to the trim. The only noteworthy flaw are some scratches to one side of the crescent (see photo). Outsized Conklin Toledo #5 nib has good tipping and yields Super-Flexible variation. Lays down a smooth and consistent F/M line that widens to a BBB+ under light pressure (see writing sample). Excellent snap-back and reliable flow with no skipping, railroading, ink bombs, or other baddies. Guaranteed to fill and write as designed with no leaks. Box is well-preserved as well, but is missing one end-flap on the sliding interior.
