View Full Version : SOLD World's Worst Pen/Ink PIF!

Warning! A sample vial of Baystate Blue ink, AND the pen to put it in. (That is if the feed hasn't melted by now.)

This blue Pelikano Junior has been my BSB pen since the beginning. One day, while cleaning the pen, I carelessly left the section sitting in a glass of water for two-point-five seconds too long. It left a permanent mark.

Here, the inkstained section compared to a NORMAL Pel Junior.

http://extras.ourpatioparty.com/files/4715/2431/7705/BSB.JPG

I may also include another sample of a different ink, but you may (or may not! Muahahaaa!) have to provide your own pen for that.

So go ahead. If you have the guts. ;)

CONUS only. Offer will remain open for a bit. Random choosing of the loser, er, winner. I'd say good luck, but, you know...

Not an entry (fer sure!), just a Thank You for the opportunity for newcomers to come face to face with the infamous BSB complete with a Sacrificial Pen. To observe the behavior of the ink and it's steady deleterious effect on the helpless Pelikano. Only the Brave.

I'd dye the whole grip section blue at this point. :)

Geographically ineligible or I'd be in. Love Pelikano Juniors and curious about BSB.

Not an entry, because I already have this ink and an inexpensive pen I use it in. If that weren't the case, I would have entered though. FWIW, I do kind of like the color of Baystate Blue, but I'm not sure it's the greatest choice for everyday writing and it can be tricky to maintain, as others already noted.

Annnnd the loser is:

DavidtheGnome, of Cleveland, OH! (Chosen by the highly suspect eeny-meeny method).

David, c'mon down!

Alas. Please PM me with name and postal address (and next of kin). Please don't forget your HazMat suit when unboxing. I will deport the package when the ink stops pulsating. May The Force be with you.

Okay, let's make this interesting. I suggest the loser be required to sing "Born Under a Bad Sign" a cappella, record it, and post the mp3 to a free mp3 hosting site and post the link here. And since I have one of the world's worst singing voices (not as bad as Yoko Ono's, but maybe a close second), y'all had better hope and pray Sailor Kenshin doesn't decide to implement my idea and then pick me as the unlucky sap.

Yep, yep, that's correct. I am hereby throwing my hat into the ring.

In a way it's fitting that I should subject you to the sound of my off-key, out-of-tune monotone as a sort of turnabout for the BSB. I think you'll get the worse deal, however. The Pelikan is a fine pen, and BSB is a pretty color, despite its, ahem, less desirable though nevertheless legendary ability to turn everything it touches blue for all eternity. My voice, on the other hand, has been known to make grown men weep, and there's really no upside to it, other than the entertainment value of seeing someone make a damn fool of himself in public. I should warn that there is no false modesty in my description of my singing voice. My cat sings better than I do.

In any event, I did PM you my address just now.

I promise I'll make the recording and get it up on this thread, and I will make every effort to get it done within the next two or three days.

In any event her fingers tell us that she has undoubtedly filled a pen with BSB within the past two years.

Cleaning and filling pens with BSB is best done outside on grass where you’re less likely to destroy floors, counter tops, sinks... a garden hose is also an underappreciate tool for cleaning out pens.

HOWEVER... apparently it is pearlescent. I don't know if I can do that to the Pelikano Junior, after what it's already been through. I think of it as a rescue pen that's been abused and is looking for a loving forever home. I plan to feed it nothing stronger than Waterman Serene Blue, or maybe a little Diamine Havasu Turquoise now and then once it's built its strength back up. As for the BSB, I have some 10-year-old Speedball italic dip pen nibs that should be able to handle it.

Particularly pig pens, I'd imagine, though I wouldn't know first hand, not being the agricultural sort. As for cleaning out fountain pens with BSB, however, I think a fire hose might work even better than a garden hose.

...and yet, it doesn't feel half-bad being corrupted. I recognize the pattern, of course: "Try it, you'll like it. Here, the first one is free." And now I am like a million other junkies, already wondering what I'm going to do when this little taste of BSB is gone, and what depraved depths I might have to sink to to get my next fix. Will I have to turn to mugging little old ladies and knocking over liquor stores? How sordid! But I blame the supplier. Damn you Noodlers, and your little dog too.

When my wife saw this picture she thought that I was associating with disgusting people who do questionable things in their sinks. I was obliged to make up a story and pretend it was an image from a derelict house, not an actual in use sink. Just in case it worries other members of your family, as it disturbs mine, you need to know that BSB is soluble in ethanol, iso-propyl and other common alcohols. Hand sanitizer containing one of these also has a gelling agent which sticks it to the surface long enough to dissolve the ink and you can flush it away.

I love my Esterbrooks. You can have one or two pens and a dozen of the threaded nib units, which are also somewhat interchangeable with Osmiroid 65 pens (and vice versa).

It all began with inheriting my mother's old Esterbrook and having it restored. And then I discovered the larger J series and the hockey puck. From there it's a little hazy.

There. I have successfully threadjacked my own PIF.

That 9556 nib you wrote your note to me with laid down one of the finest lines I've seen a pen make. When I looked it up, it turns out to be called a firm fine. The 9555 is called a firm extra fine. It boggles my mind. So I've got to ask, how smooth are these nibs, anyway?

This Esterbrook nib chart may be of interest to some:
http://www.snyderfamily.com/current/estienibs.htm

The *555 was marketed as a Gregg shorthand nib while the *556 as a fine writing nib. To me they seem quite similar in line weight from my limited experience. They lay down a fine (as in nice) fine (as in narrow) line alright :)

If you want an insanely fine (as in narrow) line, try a 1550 posting nib...
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180806/1092278bfa39e888a369f5c7d90142d2.jpg

Smooth enough to write rapidly with for note taking too. Most of the Estie nibs I've tried that are in good shape are quite pleasant to write with.

Smoothness varies. Most of the time they are very pleasant writers. Sometimes you run across a snaggletooth that benefits from a little stropping.

I think Mom's Estie has the 1550. It vies with a manga pen and a Sailor Sapporo EF for the finest nib I own that can still write.

The manga pen was $5. The Estie, whatever it cost to be resacced back then ($25?). The Sailor....yeah. Three figures.

I have a number of Esties and a couple Osmiroids. I have experimented with replacing nibs in the nib units and interchanging Osmiroid nibs with Esterbrooks. It is my experience that (in my hand - YVMV) Osmiroid nibs work better in Esterbrooks than they do in their own pen bodies.
