Retro Toledo

The original Toledo design is a favorite, and Pelikan has since reproduced it in an exact replica, and also an M900 and an M700. Here is the Toledo in the M700 size with gold finish, which I selected because it accepts any of my many nib units from my M101N, M2xx and M4xx pens (and others I'm sure). Its original Toledo nib is a B, reground to cursive italic by Richard Binder. My understanding is every Toledo binde is hand-engraved and therefore unique. It's a great Pelikan if you happen to find one!

The Toledo models are just cool. I think these are cooler than their Maki-e pens.

I just recently ordered from Cult Pens the M700, taking advantage of their 10% discount and free Pelikan single pen case. Can't wait... :)

Beautiful. I should have bought the reproduction version (T111) when I had the chance. It is out of reach now.

Given that the M700 is M4xx's standard size, and Pelikan skipped over the larger M6xx to select the even bigger M8xx size for the M900, and considering that the M1000 is massive enough to dissuade pen users from buying them, the M900 is probably about as big as Pelikan wanted to go to ensure enough sales. Perhaps they simply compared sales of the M6xx, M8xx and M1000 pens. This is all speculation, of course, but I don't think Pelikan's decision is weird.

I bought one of the Pelikan M900s, with their solemn assurance that no more would be made. Got the pen, the certificate, the t-shirt, and everything. Then they changed their minds, ruining whatever resale value my M900 might have had. Nevertheless, the pen is beautiful, and I'm glad I bought it.

Just reviving straight to the thread. Interesting to see the new models vs. the old ones. The older ones are a much brighter cold color where the new ones almost look bronze-like. I wonder what changed.

Someone sold a Toledo 18K M nib super cheap on eBay a few years ago. I was the winner of that auction and it sits in my m205 Rings version. It's a great dual tone nib with some line variation but I want to get it ground for more pronounced variation.

I know a little antique shop where I've bought a lot of my pens, including a couple of Onotos that cost £2 each, and some super cheap Parker 51s. I drop in two or three times a year and the owner knows exactly the kind of thing I'm after, though I always look at his other stock, too - he gets some very interesting objects from time to time.

To my great surprise, one day, I found him looking a bit miserable. "I've only got one pen in stock," he said in apology, "and it's a bit expensive."

It was. But I couldn't resist the comic little Pelikan. Or the lovely nib. And I'm very glad that I have it, because another Toledo is unlikely to come my way any time soon.
