Today I'm reviewing a brand new Diamine Shimmer ink for 2018: Diamine Rockin Rio Shimmer ink.

Diamine Rockin Rio Shimmer ink is a new addition to the Diamine Shimmer inks range for 2018.
It’s a dark orange or terracotta shade ink with gold shimmer. It’s almost as dark as Cult Pens Deep Dark Orange. Not as brown as Terracotta or Ancient Copper, but less red than Blood Orange. More orange and less red than Brandy Dazzle.
It didn’t suffer from any hard starts or skips when I put the uncapped pen down to do swab tests, dry times and water resistance.
In fact it never suffered from hard starts despite this ink fill having been in this pen for over a month. I’ve deliberately left it for days in order to see if it suffers from hard starting or any skipping when I uncap the pen and start writing again. It has never failed to start writing immediately.
It dried fairly quickly on all of the papers I used it on and once dry it didn’t smudge or smear.
I found it flowed wetter, and looked darker in the Waterman Phileas pen with stub nib that I used, but there was no problem seeing the gold shimmer even with the F nib.
It easily washes off of my hands with cold or warm water and bar soap and it easily flushes out of my converters and pens just using water. I have inked up a Lamy Al-Star and a Pilot Custom 74 with these shimmer inks so that I can clearly see when there are shimmer particles inside the section and when there aren’t. Cleaning them out of both of these sections was easy.
I’m finding that shimmer inks are wetter than they used to be and that makes them easier to use in many fountain pen brands.

Flow Rate: Excellent. Felt wetter in broader nibs.
Lubrication: Excellent.
Nib Dry-out: Not noticed.
Start-up: Immediate.
Saturation: Reasonably saturated ink, and a strong colour.
Shading Potential: Very nice shading.
Show-Through / Bleed-Through: None worth mentioning.
Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Not seen.
Nib Creep / “Crud”: Not seen.
Staining (pen): Not seen after several days in the pen - easy clean-up with water.
Staining (hands): Easy clean-up with bar soap and warm water.
Clogging: Not seen. Seems unlikely.
Water resistance: Not sold as waterproof but has some water resistance.
Availability: Available in decorative 50ml glass bottles exclusive to the Diamine Shimmer ink range. Sold directly through the Diamine web-site, or via many retail outlets worldwide.

does the shimmer clog the feed for you? I've heard its been an issue for some.

None of these shimmer inks have clogged any of my feeds, but sometimes, some of them used to do that. As time goes by, things change and reformulations happen. Shimmer inks are now wetter, they don't clog feeds, and they are easier to clean out of pens/feeds. In my experience, these inks are almost as easy to clean out as regular inks.

Last year, I received a very kind gift of the original J.Herbin 1670 Red Hematite ink. This was the first version that had what looks quite like a red "sludge" in the bottom of the bottle. Before they changed it to gold shimmer particles. I can shake the bottle and fill a pen with it, but OMG it won't write in so many of my pens. My Sheaffer Targa and my Parker Ellipse both absolutely hate it. I've cleaned both pens out many times, put both sections through the USC, and I still see some red ink remains when I shine a light into the section.

By comparison, as I said somewhere else, I deliberately inked up two pens with demo sections with these latest Diamine Shimmer inks, and just flushing with water removed all traces of them. Not one particle could be seen anywhere in the sections, even using a loupe.

Not all brands of shimmery inks are equal. I read on a blog recently that Lamy Vibrant Pink ink sticks around in sections after much careful cleaning and flushing out.

Thanks Chrissy! I'm glad to hear this! I'll venture forth and try some of the new Diamine ones in my Pilot Metropolitan first and see how I go.

Thanks for your help!

You're welcome. :) Please let us know how you get on. I don't have a Pilot Metropolitan, but my Pilot Custom 74 always writes beautifully when filled with shimmer inks.
