On the new banner I found: FPN Pen Store; FPN Inks; Premium Accounts; Cafe Press; Donate to FPN

Are any of these considered ads? The new banner uses a lot of the visual real estate available on my portable web enabled IOS device.

For what it is worth, you can block those with adblock. I did because they give me seizures.

Proxomitron also works very well. I have used it for many years of ad-free surfing.

Access adblocks filter rules and add the following:
/forum/html/passaporto-200m.png
/forum/html/prem-all-02mw.png
/forum/html/supportfpn2b.png
/forum/html/inklogo.png

You will need to add in the bit before /forum for each one .

I must be doing something wrong. I tried hari's instruction but my right-click menu does not even include adblock, though I can access it on my toolbar and it is active. Sloegin's instructions, also followed to the letter, did not have the slightest effect even though I hit refresh several times. The images are still there.

Hmmm. What browser are you using and which adblock extension?

mhguda

Mozilla seamonkey, with adblock plus extension.

For Firefox:
Right click on element you want to eliminate.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7292/8742078685_6333ac951d.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/69334333@N00/8742078685/)

Select Adblock Plus: Block Image and a dialog box will open.

Select the radio button that refers to the specific image. And Press add filter. That is it, the element disappears!

For Chrome:
Right click on the element you want to block and select Block element from the drop down menu that pops up.

A new box pops up. Click on add and that is it! Good luck.

I've found out what the problem was: an outdated plug-in. Now up-to-date, and the right-click menu did pop up now. Was able to remove the images. Thanks for helping out!

I'd consider them ads... annoying that they're there on every page. Annoying because, as you noted, they take up so much screen real estate. As for screen real estate, add in the left side banner too.

I'd be curious for someone to check this out, especially with a mobile device: AFAIK, apps like AdBlock may stop you from seeing those ads, but the html code still has the place for those images, and I don't think you gain back your screen real estate! I know I just went a blocked that entire line of items, and while I don't see them any more, there is a big white space where they go. That's after refreshing the cache, too.

Jon, I think that's how Adblock works on android. Like Kenshin said its not possible on the iPad without jailbreak.

The ads I could somewhat tolerate. However, it is the FPN PC brigade I can barely adapt. As if there's no need for human hand let alone human heart for pens to write. The "Thou shalt not talk about anything other than pens here!" general sentiment backed by the rules. Identify my crap or some trivial like how wide is my nib, chartpak blah blah blah and that's it. End of discussion. As if the whole world should be stiff upper lipped as they are. One big "My pen is precious it has sentimental value, but let's leave out the sentiment shall we?" forum. /rant

Plenty of instructions on howto jailbreak an ipad mate, just google it. Then install adblocker via cydia. Like this bloke
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvdbEFFy6jM&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Same thing with Android, root then install abp from adblockplus.org. Sorry for the little derailment folks, carry on..

Be careful. It voids your warranty and you can get into all kinds of trouble with OS-updates. And if you have to take it back to Apple for some reason, they won't look kindly on it.

After removing the images with adblock, I found out that an older add-on for mozilla browsers also allows this, plus you can remove the placeholder box and get the blank screen real estate back. The add-on is Nuke anything enhanced (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/nuke-anything-enhanced/?src=api)
It allows you to remove any trace of those annoying banner ads. This add-on is for Firefox, but I find it works for Seamonkey, too.
HTH.

It might be easier to use the Opera browser and block ads using the method described here (http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/block-advertisements-opera-browser/). It has worked well for me on an Android device, and Opera has a browser available for iOS.
