Beautiful day in Chicago. If you look closely, the Willis (formerly Sears) Tower antennae are in the background.

My house started as a cabin over a hundred years ago. It's grown slightly and oddly, I'm not sure which side would be considered the front or back.

So, here's looking east,

and west,
2815

West is cheating a little as I'm not standing exactly at my door.

Two more. This is one of my pastures being used by the SCA, Society for Creative Anachronism, for their Beltane Festival a couple of weeks ago. 400 people reenacting the middle ages kept the llama, Llarry, quite amused by the spectacle of it all.

and one looking up,

Great thread. Here is a sunrise photo from my patio looking probably Southeast, and then a photo snapped just now, with a light rain falling around 8 a.m., looking south and slightly west.

This oak tree is devouring a pine tree at a local park where we frequently take walks. The oaks in this park have lots of oak galls for making ink.

I posted this in another thread so pardon the repost.

Living in the desert southwestern US (El Paso, Texas) far removed from major hub cities can have its drawbacks but we get the largest equestrian statue in the world. That counts for something, right?

On the way to Las Cruces, if you are willing to take it slow, you can drive through the Pecan groves. This past season was not too good to the growers though. The summer rains never really came.

can't tell now, I tossed a bunch of broken-up concrete in there a few years ago. My best guess is it's about 10 meters deep.

(after doing the math and estimating fall time at just over a second, my guess isn't half bad. shudder.)

We had a visitor this morning. These guys live in our retention pond but we haven't had them come this far up into the yard before. This is a few feet outside of our screened patio, in the landscaping. The thing was digging with back legs so I couldn't tell if he/she was burying something or what? We don't see anything. Thought I would share since it was out my back door . . .

Tracy Lee
June 11th, 2013, 09:02 AM
This one was probably 12 or so inches across the top of the shell, maybe 14 (width) and maybe 14 or16 long. I have seen them closer to twenty so they get very big. No predators in these ponds they can just live a happy undisturbed life. Unless a gator gets in through the drainage system, which has happened, then all bets are off for turtles and ducks alike.

If the turtle is digging with its back legs its female and burying eggs. There should be a mound somewhere. You obviously have a safe place for them to be so secure. Look out for baby turtles!

Yeah, we kind of assume she was a she. Dug quite a lot in the mulch but we think she changed her mind about things when she dug through to the landscape fabric and couldn't dig deeper. I went out and double checked. - no eggs - I think it just wasn't right. Otherwise, protect I would. I have monitored snake egg nests, bird nests, saved baby birds, saved snakes, fed the wild rabbits, tried not to hate the huge armadillo who digs in the landscape giant holes right through fabric, the squirrel that taunts and chatters at the cats, etc. It is pretty active around here. But then, that is Florida for you.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/09/uruby8ep.jpg our first snow fall as sputtered out for December in Ajax beside Lake Ontario. We tend not to get many snow falls here. You definitely have more snow in the desert than we do.

A literal predawn picture out the back door of the deck and only the dogs had been out thus far.....notice the little paw prints.

Hmmm... on this side of the lake we had our first snow weeks ago... Great White North my foot :p

I think it was either trying to sleep in the cooler ground area between the Magnolia & Camillia or it could have fallen out of the tree.

I live on the coast of south eastern Australia near the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. I only have less than 150 metres to walk to the water's edge. I usually walk the beach at daybreak and find everyday can be quite unique. Here's three rather special ones. They are in 16x9 aspect ratio suitable for laptop wallpaper if you wish to download them (right mouse click, 'save image as') as there is no copyright involved. These photos were taken with a $70 compact Nikon L27.

They are beautiful photos. Very Idyllic. Were they taken at low tide ?

Yes, all at low tide. Between the house and the water's edge is a bank of 10 meter high sand dunes that negates any threat from high tides, etc. I tether all of my camels up there ... :)

A Sulpher-crested cockatoo (Cacatu galerita) on our TV aerial eating a lemon from our lemon tree.
He/she dropped the lemon on our roof after eating the seeds out of it.

A big male squirrel decided to come by and pester the cats a bit. It took a lot to get him to move on, he was behaving a bit aggressively and fearless and though the cats were not in any danger, he needed to go carry on elsewhere from my standpoint.

Reminds me of a nurse that I worked with who had a vacation home in one of the southern states. Said she alway had to keep her windows closed because of the squirrels. I asked: because they'd try to come in. She said no: that if you didn't feed them when they came up on the screens, they would get mad and 'pee' through the screens and into the house!!! Nice!

Back from a wild sailboat ride to Chicago in a way-too-fast 46 footer my father-in-law wanted to purchase. The smaller boat here is a neighbor as seen from our [empty] slip... Nice to have our sea legs back though!

We had a visitor this morning. These guys live in our retention pond but we haven't had them come this far up into the yard before. This is a few feet outside of our screened patio, in the landscaping. The thing was digging with back legs so I couldn't tell if he/she was burying something or what? We don't see anything. Thought I would share since it was out my back door . . .

Don't get your fingers or toes anywhere near that mouth that is better known as a alligator snapping turtle and will take your finger off I used to live in florida and I used to push them out of the road and all of us who have ever spent any time in florida know to use a branch off a tree to move them never ever use your fingers , hands or feet.

It's beautiful isn't it? It changes every day and we are continually mesmerised by the view.

You were doing well with the pens, ink & TR paper but sadly my husband is allergic to cats and my dog doesn't like them.
All the same, the TR paper ALMOST got you over the line.

Damn no TRP. Plenty of Rhodia & Maruman.
Mrs Bogon fell for the line "domesticated" & luckily for her the stationery and fountain pen addicted didn't kick in until a decade or so into the marriage.
Her yarn & wool addiction didn't start until three years ago.

I do enough domestic chores here to last me a lifetime, I was kind of hoping for a pampered life in the sun. Thanks anyway if you ever get servants in let me know.
