OK, I am looking at sailboats. This will be my home, and I need a quality (but not crazy expensive) log book. I actually will need a few, one for maintenance records, and one for a true ships log to log all my trips so that I can prove hours at sea, log location on a hourly basis and watch change notes. The maintenance log should be a binder that I can put in pockets to keep receipts and what not, but the ships log needs to have permanently bound pages. There are some pre-made ones available at the marine markets but they are expensive and not really very high quality and I am not sure about the fountain pen friendliness of them.

So basic requirements:
Fountain pen friendly
water resistance (should not be submerged but on a boat everything can get splashed)
Should look nice, and being able to put boat name on it is a plus, as it will be out on the Nav station all the time.
Should be lined perhaps even french style or legal style for organization.
Any quality paper already hole punched for maintenance log?

Then I guess I will need a waterproof ink that is not too hard to clean out of pens. I don't think my favorites Watermans or Diamine have much water resistance.

Well, as far as ink goes, any of the Noodler's Bulletproof inks will fit your needs. As far as the logbooks go, I am at a loss. I've seen some nice laboratory and record keeping books, but nothing in the way of traditional ships' logs.

I love the look of old ledger books and the ones I have are fountain and dip pen friendly. I don't know how modern ones hold up but I was thinking of something like these:

That looks like it may work. But for 40 dollars, I was thinking I might actually get a leather cover. perhaps I will take a fountain pen in with me to the marine store and see if there paper works with fountain pens.

I found what might be a cheaper alternative while I was digging through my accumulated notebooks. It's a Tops Royale business notebook. I have the casebound version (hardcover), but they're also produced with wire binding. The paper is quite nice and the binding is rather durable. It is actually manufactured by Nippecraft Ltd of Singapore and the exact item number on the one I have is 25231. Here's an Amazon link to the wirebound version:

They are affordable. If you highly desire the leather cover, the best outlay may be finding a system that uses a leather cover and refills -- that way you aren't buying leather covers over and over and can easily pack away the full-up refills for easy storage.
