I have noticed that on several of my Esterbrook nibs the nib number is vertical vs across the nib. Any particular reason for the difference?

Vertical running numbers are, I think, from later production.

As far as I can tell, at some point during the production of the 9000 series of renew nibs they went to the vertical numbering. I have an old SJ with a 9550 nib, and its numbers run horizontally, but I found some NOS 9550 nibs on eBay with the numbering running vertically. I also saw 9128, 9460, 9461, and 9556 nibs with vertical numbering on eBay today, and I know I've seen photos of most if not all of them with the numbers running horizontally somewhere too. I don't think I've ever seen any of an earlier series with vertical numbering, at least as far as I can remember.
