Burnham was a British maker that flourished from the 1920s to the 60s. The pens in this batch are all of 1950s vintage, a period during which the company vied with Conway Stewart for that share of the market comprising quality pens at a sensible price point. The group below is representative, having been constructed of durable, attractive materials and outfitted with well-finished 14k nibs. As always, all are fully restored and ready to write.

Some Notes on Casein:

Like some of its competitor's, Burnham manufactured pens from casein plastic, which is derived from the milk protein. Rivaling the durability of celluloid but less prone to discoloration from light and outgassing sacs, casein could be made in an array of exciting color patterns unobtainable with other materials. But casein plastic has one significant drawback: it is unusually sensitive to water. If submersed and soaked, it's liable to suffer deformation and mutation. Over time, even exposure to humid conditions – as in the attics and basements where these pens were often stored – can cause it to develop crazing, i.e. fine surface cracks that have a mosaic or spiderweb appearance. Many of the casein Burnhams and Conway Stewarts I've encountered exhibit these to some degree. But I'm pleased to report that all the pens below have survived unscathed, having no crazing whatsoever. And they will remain that way provided they're stored in climate-controlled conditions and *never EVER* soaked in water. Momentary exposure is harmless, but ultrasonic cleaners or soaking of nibs submersed past the section is a no-no (sections themselves are not made of casein).

Condition (n.b.): All pens listed below have been disassembled, cleaned and restored with new sacs installed in the last couple weeks. Each is guaranteed to fill and write as designed without leaks or other issues. Nibs have been adjusted when necessary to ensure that all lay down a smooth and consistent line. These pens have no cracks, chips, personal engravings, missing parts, bent nibs, misaligned tines, or threading issues.

2. 1950s Burnham "Chatsworth" (56) (red and blue-grey marble swirl and gold veins, casein, GPT, lever filler, 14k Stubby M Superflex nib). Measures 5" capped. Boots Chatsworth was a pharmacist that commissioned pens from several different makers, including De La Rue and Burnham. This pen has no number imprint on the barrel (only "Chatsworth"), but I've read that these were equivalent to a No.56. Wild color pattern has a molten-like appearance, every part of which seems to ripple and shimmer under light. Single cap band and a clip attached at the top by a threaded plastic jewel. Super-Flexible 14k Burnham nib lays down a smooth and consistent and slightly stubby M line that widens to a BBB+ under light pressure (see writing sample below). I wouldn't call it a full-fledged stub, but there *is* some subtle unflexed variation between the down- and cross-strokes. Condition: No brassing to the trim aside from the clip tassie and a negligible spot on the right side of the clip at the bottom. Cap band can be spun around but rests securely in its groove. Casein has a smooth, lustrous surface with no notable blemishes. And imprint is sharp and fully legible. Price: $150 SOLD

4. 1950s Burnham B59 (red marble swirl w/ black veins, casein, GPT, lever filler, 14k B Flex nib). Measures 5" capped. A model higher up in the Burnham food chain, featuring triple cap bands, cowled clip affixed with metal button at the top, and fully streamlined body. Another pretty color pattern, this one in red and black with a texture at once marbled and rippled or swirled. Flexible 14k Burnham nib lays down a buttery smooth and consistent B line that widens to a BBB or so under moderate pressure (see writing sample below). Very smooth and wet without being sloppy. Condition: No brassing to the trim, just some dulling to the luster at the bottom of the clip. Casein has a smooth, lustrous surface with no notable blemishes. And imprint is sharp and fully legible. Price: $150 SOLD
