Hi all,

So, I picked up a vintage 400 and, to my surprise, there was a broken feed in the barrel with an entirely new collar and feed in place. the nib is quite wobbly in the new feed. Does anyone have a spare 400 feed lying around or have any ideas on replacing it? It has a nice flexy OF nib and it would be a shame to not see use for so silly a reason.

The old nib should fit the old feed.
Try pushing the collar off (after irstsoaking the nib and feed) and then resetting the nib.

To add some clarification, I will include a picture of what I mean. The object to the far right is the broken feed that was inside the pen barrel. The feed next to it is whatever feed was put into the pen. The 'new' feed is a bit too slim as the collar slides on and off pretty easily and the nib can wobble back and forth as well. I believe the pressure from the collar also bends the nib in a funny way that the tines don't touch.

Oh my my... Here is one thing you could try.

Buy a new nib unit for an M200, those should be able to be sourced for around 25-30€ plus S&H in Europe, and for a bit more in the states.

Pull that one apart and assemble it with the vintage nib. That should work as they are built with the same specs (externally at least). For what it is worth, I have been swapping nib units between modern M200 and vintage 400/400NN without problems. Actually, just tried and the M200 fit the 400 I had here just fine. Haven't used them for longer runs but... they do fit.

The older pieces have a bit more variability spec wise so you might need to do some (or more) tweaking to get the flow etc. right. Also, the feed diameter is slightly different between the old and new units and also, the older nibs tend to be thinner > it affects the nib geometry and how the nib sits on the feed etc.

Anyway, hope you find a solution, the 400 series pens and nibs are awesome!

CultPens are currently around £8 for an M215 nib and £10 for an M200.

I'm going to try the Überpens option first and if that fails or is unsatisfactory, I will do the M200 workaround. :)

Probably too late, but I have a spare feed and sent you a p.m.
