So for those who make there own inserts for notebook cover... like the Midori etc...

What do you use to stitch them?

Just regular thread or something special?

Thanks!

I'd love to know this as well. I need to start making my own!

In the past I've used 2 strands of embroidery thread and a quilting needle to make pockets in the front and back of Moleskine soft covers. To make it look neat I sewed the thread all around the periphery of the cover so it appeared as one continuous outline. Unfortunately I've come back up to the city and that notebook is at home but I'll be sure to photograph it next weekend when I'm at my parent's house.

Google for "my life all in one place" and you will find a website of someone who creates templates for Midori insets. He also gives detailed instructions on sewing them, making pockets, etc. I would just link but that isn't easy on the phone!

Thanks for the help ....

I emailed TMLee last night, who is on FPN and has a thread that spans 6 years I believe. He went from asking a question about how to make a journal to making some outstanding journals from scratch!

This was his reply to me.

"I recommend you get hold of some thick paper.
Look for high quality magazines, where their covers seem laminated.
The paper is thicker, stiffer.
Approaching card thickness which is 160g and above.

How to stitch
The TR paper is very soft and takes quite a bit of dexterity to work with.
Search my post long ago on how to make your own cahier.
That example was using photograph paper as cover.

1) Follow the stitching method.
ie, entire spine is stitched, with each station closely next to each other.
You need to do this to prevent the paper from wobbling out of position.

2) piercing
You need to use a small strong thread.
Actually you can use dental floss too.
I have learnt that to achieve good end results with this paper, you need to pierce with a needle no bigger than the thread.
The smaller the station pierced, the tighter the fit when you pull thru the thread.
This TR paper needs this kind of tight fits thru out its stitching processes. "

Ill give it go and post the results, but he does know what he is doing. If you get a chance & have some time check out his thread over there. Unbelievable!

Ahhh,...

Found this quick youtube video that is simple and easy... and I did a test one tonight... was abreeze and came out great!

http://youtu.be/Qa6VbwC6B6s

I used Stock paper for the cover and 17 sheets of copy paper. Folded in half they make a 34 page notebook. Used dental floss as it was what I had at 3am ;)

Does anyone trim the edges so they are even or squared off???

That came out pretty good for a 3am activity.

I've seen some people use a corner punch to give their notebook rounded corners for stand-alone use.

My inserts only contain about 10 signatures each (5 X3 inches), so I staple them along the spine at the local copy centre, which has a VERY large stapler. I usually keep around 10 inserts ready at a time, since each insert goes pretty fast (about a week in the lab). Then I file them based on the week. Helps me keep track of my research.

One notebook, two covers, thirty four pages. Nice.
