HisNibs.com update -- Over-the-Top 2
May 7th, 2011

Greetings,

In the new offerings department, we have the Baoer Over-the-Top version 2...both the Demi and the Standard size of the Hero 616 (an homage to the Parker 51)...an addition to the Uranus 621 family, featuring Picasso...a Chinese Cherry Blossom pen...and new additions to Lai Yee's pen roll patterns.

On the re-stocking front, the perennial best-sellers -- the Hero 329 and the Pilot 78G -- are back in their multitudinous colors and nib sizes.

Join us on our Facebook fan page. Facebook has recently simplified addressing for business pages, so we can now be reached directly at www.facebook.com/hisnibs1.

On the blog....Did you ever build something with toothpicks?...and a kitten plays with dolphins.

Baoer Over-the-Top 2

Here we have the big brother version of the original Baoer Over-the-Top model, particularly in girth and with its cap posted.

Whether in black or red, the simple, clean lines of this lacquer-over-brass beauty looks great in one's pocket, on the desk or in one's hand. The only adornment is the military-style clip -- a narrow cap band engraved with the 'Baoer', the company logo and model number '516' -- and a simple barrel-end decorative button.

Hero 616

http://www.hisnibs.com/Hero616GroupRandom_small.jpg

This homage to the great Parker 51 model fountain pen comes in two sizes, much like the original. The Demi, in both the Parker and Hero versions, was slightly smaller in length and girth to the Standard model (in fact, Parker renamed the Demi as the Slender, but I'll stick with the original nomenclature).

Both versions of the Hero 616 reprise the Parker arrow clip, and are crowned by steel 'jewels'. The caps are etched with separated groupings of pinstripes (7 per group for the Demi, 11 for the larger Standard cap) and have the Chinese characters for 'Hero' and the model number '616'.

Uranus 621 series Picasso

http://www.hisnibs.com/Uranus621PicassoPenCap_small.jpg

The Picasso version of the 621 series joins its four stablemates in this colorful series of pens.

The pens in the 621 series are slim, but not small, measuring 5-1/4" capped, 5-1/4" posted (although I find it takes a light touch to post them, due to the barrel shape) and 4-5/8" with cap held aside.

Removing the slip cap -- which snaps securely back in place -- reveals the brushed steel section and the hooded (or semi-hooded, depending upon your definition) steel nib. The nib is equivalent to a typical western fine in size.

Cherry Blossom

I always hesitate to mention in this newsletter -- which has a subscription in the thousands -- a new pen that I only have in a small quantity. Someone is bound to be disappointed when they sell out quickly.

I do hope to be able to obtain more of these no-name beauties in the future. However, if the pen appeals to you, I'd suggest letting me know quickly.

You can see more photos and read a description of the pen on the website.

Hero 329 restocked

"I just received the Hero 329 pens in the mail today. Thanks so much for the great service and fast shipment! I bought three pens: one for me, one for my mother, and one for my girlfriend, and all three of us give them two thumbs up, so I guess that would be six thumbs up? Beyond the bad joke, I really am enjoying the super-fine point on this pen, the great feel of the nib, and the serious amount of ink it holds. I can't wait to see how it will find its way into my workflow and what role it will take, but I'm sure it will serve its purpose admirably. Thank you again for carrying this pen and for selling it; It's such a great value. I'll be sure to visit His Nibs.com again very soon."

"Hi Norman, I wanted to let you know that the Hero 329 arrived and I'm loving it. I bought it with very low expectations due to its low price. However, it is becoming the pen I reach for most often. I have numerous other pens, some costing hundreds of dollars, but the Hero 329 is one of the best."
K. N., Marquette, MI

"Hello Norman. Since my last message to you, I've inked up my new '329' and covered an entire notebook page with Forest Green words of praise and joy! Norman, this pen writes beautifully! Substantially finer than my Al-Star's 'extra fine' nib (which is perfect for me) so I'll have no trouble writing in the margins of papers and books. I am completely satisfied with the balance of this pen (posted and unposted). I am also jubilant about the '329' from a perspective of aesthetics; this is a gorgeous writing instrument!...Since receiving my 329 two days ago, I've continuously tested its limits regarding inks, paper compatibility and overall performance. It writes flawlessly on every level of paper from Clairefontaine to newsprint. I can finally use a fountain pen with my Moleskine again! =) My 329 also lays down such a smooth, hair-fine line so that writing in cramped margins on poor-quality mass-produced books and cheap printer paper is an absolute breeze!

"Boy, for the price you can't beat this little guy, can you. Love the look of the line the nib lays down [referring to 'B' nib]. Very light and very simple and elegant. Thanks so much!"
K. C., Lincoln, NE

"Hi, Norman - These Pilots really and truly are terrific pens. I've been using them and the [Hero] 329 exclusively for almost a month and it's all good! Haven't touched my Pelikans and old Parkers in quite a while...Thanks a million."
C. D., Berkeley, CA

"A couple of months ago, I ordered a Pilot 78 from you. After considerable use, I just wanted to write and add my voice to the chorus of praise for this pen. It's a marvelous little daily writer, made all the more desirable by your attractive pricing. The nib is smooth with a hint of flex and I find the ink flow to be just right -- not to much nor too little. It's an attractive pen, looking much richer than it's actual cost. And it is incredibly light. It's one of a handful of pens I write with the cap on. Just to let you know, Pilot / Namiki cartridges fit this pen perfectly."
D. H., Gainesville, GA

On the blog...Did you ever build something with toothpicks?

If so, you'll really be amazed at what Scott Weaver's created! See it on the May 4th entry.

On May 2nd, I posted a link to a little video featuring a kitten and a group of dolphins. I'm not sure which enjoyed the interaction more!
