Odd Sheaffer PFM or is it ?

Hi all

Just stumbled across this odd PFM listed on the BayofEvil

Visually it seems to slim to be a PFM, more like an imperial.

It does not have a Snorkel sack protector, again more like an Imperial.

The feed is part of the section moulding but it does have a hole for a Snorkel, although the snorkel tube looks to be flat ended rather than angled.

Anyone know what it is.

It looks like some sort of Imperial type to me. Definitely not fat enough for a PFM.

Looks like an odd imperial variation that has a either a diptip fill hole or snorkel. How odd. Too bad it is so beat up. I wonder if it is a prototype or something.

Managed to snag it after a sudden price drop, will post an update once (if) I receive it.

Sheaffer did something like that with their Dolphin models, they had the section covering the feed as well

Must have been something Sheaffer Australia tried, I wonder how rare it realy is.

Anyone seen them before.

Don't assume anything until you've actually got it in hand for inspection. I've seen feeds that have a hole that doesn't lead anywhere, so it may actually serve no purpose at all. Or it might. You'll know in a few days.

This is normal and a not-uncommon Imperial section/feed configuration.

Perhaps you just haven't seen very many Imperials, or this feature simply escaped your notice. The more conventional form is more common, but I've seen a few dozen of this integrated type.

Hi all

So the pen arrived, first glance it appears to be an Imperial VIII, with as discussed above an unusual to me Section design covering the usual open feed, made in Australia.

It will need a full service replacing the sac and all seals, an as can be seen the cap has a few dents, which I will try to remove, once I have removed the clutch, or figured out how to remove the clutch?

Still not a bad buy for £9.99

One more picture, this time stripped for the repair attempt, as can be seen now, the hole in the front is just to let ink in for filling, will be fun getting the dents in the cap out.

Will post an update when its all back together.

I suppose you could buy your own mandrel, but using it would require lots of patience, and experience would help a lot.

Yes as said above, a mandrel of the correct shape is inserted in the cap then a hardened roller is rolled over the dent, it not always possible to get all the dent out but they can often be do reduced as not be so easy to see. Sometimes treating the surface after dent reduction help hide what's left. A small hobby sand blaster can work wonders with dome caps.

Fortunately all the dents in the Imperial cap are on the parallel section and a 10mm bar is a nice snug fit.

This will give me s chance to try out my new roller I made tonight.
