Hi All,

I've been working on putting together a website on vintage Montblanc pens. Over the past few months I've tried to steal a few minutes here and there every day or so, to write up one section at a time. Its the first time I've made a website or written content that is non-academic, and so it's nothing special, really. Photos were just taken using an iPhone. So, its a super modest site, but I wanted to share some information with other enthusiasts out there. The site is much better on the desktop than phone but check it out anywhere if you have a few minutes > https://www.vintagemontblancpens.com

The website has two sections:
1. Pen reviews - I explain the history and features of my vintage MBs. I have more than 35 pen reviews up including some seriously rare pens like an MB matchstick filler, a few rare No. 12s, 45s, lever fillers, and many more. Also, there is a list of truly rare pens that are yet for feature. Look here https://www.vintagemontblancpens.com/pen-reviews-1
2. Pen talk - I post interviews with pen experts and collectors. So far I have an enlightening interview with Francis Goossens, an interview with Poul Lund (author of Montblanc in Denmark), and coming soon is a truly insightful article on the evolution of the 149 by none other than barry Gabay! You can find the interviews here https://www.vintagemontblancpens.com/pen-talk

What I am proudest about is that many vintage pen collectors have started contributing pictures of their prized pens to help us make this website as comprehensive a respository of infromation on rare and vintage MBs as possible! This is a purely non-commerical endeavour, and so if you would like to contribute pics of your pens please get in touch with me.

I will keep updating this thread everytime I post new content on the site.

Enjoy!

Sia

Thanks Zisi for this great site. Very instructive.
I don't like modern MB, but like vintage, with a preference for the 2xx and 3xx.

Nice to be sharing it with this community, too.

Just when I thought the pendom is dying out, your website has unleashed new energy.

Kudos to your passion and contribution for novice like us. Especially getting to do a workshop with great Francis is an achievement in itself.

A big thank you from the FP fraternity [emoji119].

I am very pleased to share this truly insightful interview with Barry Gabay - writer and contributing editor to Pen World magazine for more than 20 years! His seminal article on the evolution of the 149 published in 2002 is highly revered by collectors the world over!

I recommend that you read our interview on a laptop/desktop rather than phone - it is filled with captivating details about Barry's experiences with 149s over the course of more than four decades!

Here is the link --> https://www.vintagemontblancpens.com/barry-gabay-interview-149

Barry's knowledge is only surpassed by his kindness and generosity, as I experienced first-hand while working with him on this interview.

Is 134 short window more uncommon than long window?

I just got one and I don't see it yet on your website.

Not as per my limited knowledge. Long windows were on older designs and were discontinued after some time.

Hello!

This week I have something truly special to share - a 124 E with rose chasing. This is as rare as it gets my friends! https://www.vintagemontblancpens.com/124e-rose-chasing

Also, here is a No. 2 silver overlay safety from about 100 years ago, but with a very rare characteristic - it has no branding or marking on it. https://www.vintagemontblancpens.com/unmarked-silver-safety-no-2

I have just returned from a wonderful family vacation in Spain! While in Barcelona, I had the opportunity to visit one of my favourite sellers and buy two wonderful pens: No. 0 lever filler
+ 244 in grey (Tiger Eye style).

I also received a No. 4 compressor filler as an exchange for one of my pens (through a swap I did with an FPN member in the US).

I will review these pens on our website over the coming weeks.

More interestingly, I met with Jordi Lopez in person in Barcelona! As you may recall, he is one of the generous contributors of rare pens on our website. I will be writing about my meeting with him and sharing pics of some really cool pens he showed me. It was a fascinating morning!

But, in the meantime, here are two super beautiful rare pens from the collection of Ariel Z - the No. 4 & No. 6 lever fillers in mottled red --> https://www.vintagemontblancpens.com/no-4-no-6-lever-filler-mottled-red

Stay tuned for more!

Anyway I don't think I will ever tire of seeing these older Montblanc pens. Thanks again!

Azkid, infact the 149 is a celluloid one and is smaller than the modern day 149s. And the size 0 is not even the smallest - there is a tiny version of the size 00 that is just minuscule!

FredRydr
August 17th, 2019, 05:17 AM
Guillén's comment about collecting applies to collecting anything, not just Spanish Montblanc pens:

Do not get obsessed with acquiring all of them right away. Such thing usually means paying a premium and besides, completing the whole collection normally delivers frustration instead of satisfaction because the enthusiasm suddendly faints. Stay away from stress. The pleasure is the way itself, not the achievement of the target.

I am happy to share with you that I have enhanced the website design to make it better organized:

1. All pen reviews are arranged in a timeline - see pic below for screenshot. Basically, as you scroll down the timeline bar takes you from oldest to newest pens (stopping at 1959). Here's a link - https://www.vintagemontblancpens.com/copy-of-pen-reviews

2. I have cross referenced the information in early articles with catalogues and more books I have acquired recently. I believe the information is richer now. Of course, I am not an expert and so there might be mistakes and inaccuracies or even half-solved mysteries. I hope that readers like you will point them out to me to help make our website better.

As earlier, the website and everything connected to it is purely non-commercial. I am only doing this to share information with vintage MB lovers because it allows me to learn more and it allows me to share my passion for these pens.

As always, the website is better viewed on the computer, but you can check it out on the phone too if more convenient.

Finally, I want to thank you for your encouragement as readers! Also, I want to thank to generous and kindhearted contributors to the website! This is why I refer to the website as "our" website - it is a community effort and that is what makes it special to me.

I hope to share articles on more pens over this coming year, and to interview more experts and prolific collectors. Please do get in touch with me if you have any pens you'd like me to write about. We don't just want to write about 'rare' pens. Any pre-1959 produced Montblanc fountain pens are worth writing and reading about, and are welcomed as contributions.

Happy New Year! I hope that you and your family have a wonderful 2020!

I am super excited to share with you the special Astoria article that we have been working on for a few weeks now. In it, you will find more than 34 rare pens featured, from 1921-36, along with insights about the brand and its pens from experts like Max Schrage, Osman Sümer, and Tom Westerich! I have learned so much about Astoria and Montblanc through this collaborative project, and I want to sincerely thank generous contributors like Kawuska, Ottomarkiv, Max, Osman, and especially Marcwithac (who kickstarted the project), for sharing pictures of their beautiful pens with me.

Enjoy! Link - https://www.vintagemontblancpens.com/astoria

P.S. I will continue adding pictures of Astoria pens and information on the brand to this page as and when I receive contributions from you - the readers. So, if you know something I don't, or if you have vintage Astoria pens and are willing to share pictures of them then please do reach out to me. Thanks!

Nothing that I heard of, and the mechanism seems almost the same, no? MB only made it for a very few years and it wasn’t very popular anyway so maybe it didn’t cause much trouble?

Hello all,

First timer here, I was wondering if anyone could help me identify the model (name) and type of material used in my 10+ year old MB cufflinks. I've also contacted MB today but it may be a while to hear back from them.
The sides of the cuffs are engraved 'Germany' and there is no 'AU' or any other writing, so I'm leaning towards gold-plated, may I be wrong?

The rare and coveted Montblanc Compressor - demystified! Well to some extent at least :) The compressor had a pneumatic filling system that was made for a short time in the 1920s as an alternative to the lever-filler and other more common filling systems. But it wasn’t popular and was soon discontinued. Today, the Compressors are amongst the most desirable pens for vintage MB collectors. Yet, little is known about them because of the scarcity of official documentation. I had questions and so I started piecing together information from books and then reached out to the most renowned experts in the world to fill in the gaps. I hope the resulting article provides a little more clarity on these beautiful pens.

If there is anything I might have missed or got wrong, please do let me know. I am no expert. I am just trying to triangulate information from as many sources as possible to paint a somewhat coherent picture about the history of these pens. So please don't hesitate to provide me with feedback.

Also, if you have any pre-1959 Montblanc pens that you would be willing to share images of, please let me know. I am happy to feature them on the website, do research on their history, etc. The site is meant to be a free of cost and continuously updated repository of knowledge about the history of MBs made pre-1959. The information is for the benefit of vintage MB enthusiasts like us, and images of rare pens are a very essential source of knowledge.

I could be mistaken, but it always seems to me that the Danish/Spanish/etc... models aren't as desirable; or are of a lesser pedigree. My opinion is quite the opposite. I love the not-just-black pens, and your site is one of the few that does a great job sharing them. Your eclectic approach to collecting is admirable.

Thank you! It is a bit difficult to compare MBs manufactured across regions with each other because their price points and designs were quite different for the most part. Some models were unique to countries, for example the faceted coloured 25 from Denmark. This is a high value pen, even though its not very large. A simple Danish button filler in coral red will cost more than its equivalent tier model made in Germany. Similarly, a small but colourful button filler from Spain will be far more expensive than its equivalent tier button filler from Germany. And at the higher end, look at the Spanish Chevrons. Again, quite high value in good condition, and only made in Spain. So, it depends. But you do have a point. Models like the No. 12, 45, 108, 139, 129, etc. which were topmost tier were designed and manufactured first in Germany and so I guess there would naturally be a perception of higher pedigree from pens that came from the source/German stable.

But, I agree with you, the Danish and Spanish pens are absolutely beautiful!
