Hey! I'm female, and I have never understood the need for those silly color names like "avocado", "eggshell", and the rest. :D

My wife has asked me how I could have an academic and professional background in visual arts and graphic design, and still only refer to colors by "blue", "green", etc.

It's because if we want specificity, we use Pantone numbers or product indexes. Very accurate. "Eggplant" is too vague; there are all kinds of eggplants, and I've never seen one that looks like a color sample labeled "eggplant". Pantone 5915 C (http://www.pantone.com/pages/pantone/colorfinder.aspx) is going to mean exactly the same thing to everybody with a Pantone coated stock book.

"Pink? Pink? Well, what’s wrong with pink? Seems you’ve got a pink kink in your think. Does it matter what color? Well, that gets a nope, be it pink, purple or heliotrope."

from the Pixar short film Boundin'

But seriously, are there no poets among us?

How is lavender a part of pink anyway?

Jon,

Some refer to the problem we share as color blindness. Others call it color stupid.

For years I didn't know Navy blue wasn't another name for black. I suppose it is a good thing I'm no longer allowed to wear shorts to work...

There is a support group for those that need help. I've suggested on a number of occasions that FarmGirl attend. She still insists my socks don't match.

The original (http://thedoghousediaries.com/1406) classed it as purple.

The report on XKCD's colour survey (http://blog.xkcd.com/2010/05/03/color-survey-results/) explains this: no one can spell it.

No Beije?

Or indeed Baige (op. cit.).

I think puce belongs on the left side, I have no idea what it is.

I'm surprised squant (http://www.negativland.com/archives/015squant/story.html) isn't in the list.

I had no idea about that report. In portuguese the spelling would be Bege. Didn't know about the american spelling "baige".

Where is magnolia? My whole house is this colour, apart from the kitchen. And my bedroom. Then there's the bathroom. I still want magnolia. I'm a girl, so I want it.

So, no black pens for men or women?

(Or should I say 'noir'? Or jet? Or moontar? etc etc.)

An obvious statistical polling error.

LOL, I recall a UK TV series on interior design whose principal expert lamented the idea that, in Britain, all walls are supposed to be painted with that colour.

What's more hilarious than "men and women are different?" And what's the deal with color blindness, hah? Haaah? Colors in braille? Hah? Haaah? Try the veal, et cetera!

Coming from a design background - Pantone is king.

For giggles you'll need a mid-60's paint sample book.

Only just spotted this and it reminded me of a conversation with my son this weekend. He shares a flat with another chap and they have given up on socks that match. They now have a multi-purpose sock basket in which all socks that come out of the dryer just get smoothed out and chucked in the sock basket. Even 'overnight guests' who leave laundry items behind...all random clean socks end up in the sock basket. It works well for them and might explain why he was wearing one rather conservative blue sock and the other was pink, with a 'Little Miss Naughty' pink logo on it. The criteria is 'I'll wear it if it's clean.' Seems colour matching is optional.
