Need Help Identifying Model & Type of Montblanc Pen

Hi all,

Recently purchased a Montblanc pen at an estate sale and it did not come with any packaging, certificate of authenticity, etc. I have no idea of the pen model #, nor even if it is a ballpoint or rollerball. It came with no refill thus not sure what refills to buy to actually use the pen.

Couple of questions I'd love to get your insight on:

Can anyone guess what model pen it is and whether it is a ballpoint or rollerball?
Any thoughts on its authenticity?
Is it normal that a Bordeaux pen have a black section rather than it being of the same Bordeaux color?
Is it strange that I can't seem to screw the top portion of the emblem off to see under the clip?
Is the silver ring under the gold tip normal for Montblanc pens?

Judging by the cap, it’s a rollerball.

This being said, I have never seen a MB like this in all my years of MB collecting.

Thanks for all your feedback. I was under the impression that the marble look was common in the Bordeaux color, although I am a novice here. Guessing that this may not be authentic then. I should add the I can't find any serial number on it, yet assumed it was a pre-90's pen and therefore may not have one.

Yes it is definitely counterfeit. No authentic Montblanc pen has cap bands like those.

The bands around the cap. Check them out on a picture of an authentic Montblanc pen. They are all inlaid separately into the cap and show the base colour of the body of the cap in-between them. Those on your pen are stuck on as one block and that's why there are black bands between gold coloured bands.

In fact when I was being taught details on how to spot fake Montblanc pens, fake cap bands like these was the first "definitely fake" pointer I was ever given.

I have a pink one, probably from the same source based on your pen's parts. I picked it up for fun, and it's stood the test of time as a conversation piece at pen shows. Alas, it's fallen apart, and the painted thin metal barrel cracked. Does yours have the genuine Bright Moon refill, or the counterfeit Montblanc/Pic refill?

Guessing they took some greater steps on this fake as they put engravings along the band.

Don't sweat it. Now's your opportunity to enjoy the fountain pen hobby if you'd like to give it a shot. You can either stay with Montblanc and spend about $125-175 for a decent used 144 cartridge/converter-filler in black or bordeaux, or spend less and start with one of the many good-quality fountain pens available both new and used, and capable of great writing.

Search the classifieds here (https://fpgeeks.com/forum/forumdisplay.php/7-Classifieds) and here. (http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/classifieds/) There are even ballpoints and rollerballs <gag!>. Be forewarned that eBay is risky, especially for Montblanc, unless you really know your pens.

I tend to use the maxim that Rollerball usually means Remove cap to write. Most Montblanc (and many other) ballpoints are twist action to write. Many rollerballs need the closed cap in order to prevent them from drying out their refills.

thanks Chrissy. I read that somewhere else as well, yet got a bit confused as seeing a number of pens for sale online many ballpoints came with caps as well.
