Marlen Appreciation

Any appreciation of the Marlen line? I have a great fondness for the Eclisse, despite its ungainly physiognomy. I know a lot of people point their fingers at the huge stepdown to the section, but I've never found it that uncomfortable. I remain fascinated by the off-center threading. My two are close-out acquisitions, so the opportunistic seller saw fit to remove the gold nibs and replace them with steel ones. The steel is stiff, but reasonably smooth -- not quite as smooth as the Stipula steel nibs, but a reasonable second. The Italians definitely have a handle on a good steel nib. Someday I'll replace them with gold. The resins are spectacular to my eyes. I have the Sombrero and Milky Way. Couldn't really pick between the two, although I would lean toward the Milky Way. They seem to be drying up (larf) on the aftermarket now and may be becoming a little rare. Sound off Marlen owners (especially Eclisse)!

Thanks, jacksterp! I don't think they were very popular during their production run. I only became aware of them after they had hit the close-out circuit.

Tracy L, I really like the threaded posting as well. I need to make a video of it in action because it doesn't look like it should work, but it does. Nice engineering there. For me there's something that just isn't right about using a pen unposted -- I just need to have that cap up there.

Thanks for starting this thread. I missed the table with a few Marlen at the DC show, so I've never seen them in person, but I've admired the originality and colors of their designs online--especially the Chagall and the Dossensus. It's hard to get a sense of their dimensions just from pictures, but please post some more pics anyway!

The big squares on the graph paper are 1", bluefeathers. I'll take a few more on the morrow with some other pens for comparison.

I like the Basilea very much, but have not found other models that are attractive yet not wildly artistic.

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but since this kind of thread is useful to combine information on a specific brand, I would think it is justified.

My contribution today is Marlen Basilea (almost exactly 20 years old). Got it recently, and being a vintage pen nerd, I find this pen to be one of the few modern ones that I like the look of.

Receiving the pen in my hand, I'm glad that I like it even more than the photos. I like the girth, the curves, the overall feel of the pen which is very nice. You can tell that the material used are quite thick to give that solid feeling.

One of the aspects of Marlen pens that is distinctive is their clip. I love the design and I also like it more when it's silver as it the case here, not just the clip, but also the other trims which are done very tastefully.

The filling system looks like the captive-converter type. No complaints (and I do like the metal dial under the blind cap), but I'd much prefer it if it were a true piston filler.

The nib is also beautiful. This is the largest nib from Marlen that I've seen, the same size as the one on my MB 146, but a tad longer.

The nib is 18K gold, marked as M, but it lays down Broad lines. This pen would be perfect to take to a nibmeister to grind into a nice stub or architect, if you're into that.

I'm right there with you. I have been a Marlen fan and still have an Atellen Tales and Continenti. I also have 3 Rbs. I have 4 Krones that were made by Marlen
I just recently sold off a Shuttle since I'm trying to downsize.
My Favorite rb is a Journal. I have looked for an FP to match it for years.

I didn't know that Marlen produced some pens for Krone. Interesting :)

They produced most of them, with the exception of the metal pens that were produced by Bossart and ( some E name)
